二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Some people look forward to getting braces (牙箍) on their tooth, thinking they look cool. Other people avoid visiting the orthodontist (正齿医生) until resistance becomes in vain. But anyone who benefits from the orthodontist's trade today should be thankful for the progress this science has made over the centuries.

Remains of crooked (弯曲的) human teeth date back tens of thousands of years. Greek and Roman texts describing the treatment of irregular teeth by the application of pressure date buck as far as the fifth century B.C. Archaeological evidence indicates even earlier use of orthodontic appliances, including man-made objects found in considerable burial sites in ancient Italy. Another early attempt at braces may have been discovered on Egyptian mummies with recognizable metal bands around their teeth. Thus, from at least 1,000 BC, it was known that teeth move in response to pressure.

Techniques for correcting dental irregularities did not advance much until the eighteenth century. French dentists led the way to building orthodontic practice on scientific foundations. The greatest contribution came from Pierre Fauchard. In 1728, Fauchard published the first general study of dentistry. In it, he described the process of straightening. He made smooth a crooked tooth to create space around it. Then he repositioned the tooth using a tool called a “pelican”. And he bound it to its neighbors and let it set. French and English dentists improved on Fauchard's work though the eighteenth century. Patients of Fauchard’s treatment may have been grateful when the work was complete. While many of them faced the treatment with fear and cried during the procedures, there were many Frenchmen who flooded to Fauchard to improve their looks with dental work.

Pioneering European orthodontists introduced new techniques and instruments in the nineteenth century. By midcentury, American dentists began to take the lead in research and invention. Electricity revolutionized the operating room, and the proper medicine made surgery less painful. John Farrar developed guidelines for using tools to move teeth by applying force at regular intervals.

The twentieth century saw refinement in the materials and methods of orthodontics. But the fundamental principles of the science were developed during the days of Fauchard.

SchoolMates is a nice networking platform which offers a refreshing alternative to traditional social media in that the focus is on building more meaningful relationships and encouraging interaction between users. “At SchoolMates, our mission is simple. Aimed at the 35 plus age group, which represents 50% of the population, the easy-to-use website enables users to recall and share conversations, jokes, stories, memories and photographs.

Chris was diagnosed with a tumour at the age of 18. He couldn't move and could only sit in a wheelchair. 23、A new research shows human activity is changing the sound of the Earth's oceans and seas. Scientists say the sound changes of our oceans, seas, and other waterways affect many marine (海洋的) animals - from very small shrimps to huge whales.

Sound travels very far underwater, Francis Juanes, an ecologist at the University of Victoria in Canada, told the Associated Press. For fish, he explained, sound is probably a better way to sense their environment than light. Sounds help fish and other marine animals survive and communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters.

However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise is coming from shipping traffic, underwater exploration, and other noisy human activities. For many marine animals, their attempts to communicate are being masked by sounds that humans have produced. Experts explain that masking happens when one or more noises in the water block sound important to a marine animal's living. The overall number of marine animals has gone down by about half since 1970. Some studies show the stress from human noise might also affect the immune system as well as reproductive health or behavior. Imagine having to raise your kids in a place that's noisy all the time," said Joe Roman, a marine ecologist at the University of Vermont.

"When people think of problems facing the ocean, we often think of climate change, plastics, and overfishing. But noise pollution is another thing we need to be monitoring. Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean problems," Scientist Juanes says. "If we make something for the ocean, think about how to make it quieter."

【1】Why is sound underwater important for ocean animals?

A.It changes with light.

B.It helps them judge and contact.

C.It travels very fast.

D.It guides fishermen to find where they are.

【2】What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?

A.Underwater exploration must be stopped.

B.Kids exposed to noise can’t be healthy.

C.Human noise brings stress to marine animals.

D.Marine animals have got used to sound changes.

【3】What is the author's purpose of writing the text?

A.To introduce the principle of sounds.

B.To draw attention to ocean noise.

C.To show the effects of human activities。

D.To share a method of studying oceans.

【4】What will the author probably tell us in the following paragraph?

A.How to protect marine animals.

B.What is the main cause of sea pollution.

C.How to keep the number of marine animals.

D.What to do to reduce sound pollution in the ocean.

24、Hong Kong businesses hit by nearly two months of illegal street occupations breathed a collective sigh of relief on Wednesday. Police finally cleared illegal protesters camped at the main intersection in the Mong Kok district, arresting two student leaders.

More than 7,000 officers backed bailiffs (执达官,法警)clearing occupied sections of Argyle Street and Nathan Road. The two-day operation saw 148 people arrested for various offenses, including contempt (藐视) of court, resisting arrest, possession of offensive weapons, unlawful gathering and attacking police.

The Chief Leader Stephen Hui said 22 officers were injured during the clearances.

Police used pepper spray and batons (警棍)to keep protesters from reclaiming cleared roads and from spreading the illegal occupation to neighboring streets.

Six-lane Nathan Road, which goes through the heart of Kowloon, was cleared after nearly five hours. However, comments on the Internet said protesters were looking to reoccupy roads later in the evening.

This week's actions mark the first time the authorities have successfully cleared one of the three main protest sites, which sprang up after demonstrators seized key intersections in late September to press for unconstitutional reforms.

Contractor Kwan Sui-sum, 55, said he wished the Nathan Road clearance had come earlier, as he has had to pay HK$20,000 ($2,580) after the protesters delayed building reconstruction work. The owner of the Chung Hing Duty Free drug store was cautiously optimistic and eager for his store at the corner of the cleared intersection to get back to business. Sales dropped by 40 percent during the occupation, he said.

“I'm not worried about the guess that the protesters will return. I trust in Hong Kong's rule of law and in the police,” the man said, who wished to remain unknown as he fears attack from protesters.

But five stores at a cleared site owned by jewelry chain Chow Tai Fook were still closed hours later. A company spokesman said the outlets will remain shut while it continues to monitor the situation.

1You can infer from the passage that _______.

A. the Hong Kong police cleared the roads at a cost

2In the two-day operation,_________.

A. many Hong Kong citizens joined in it

B. all the protest sites were cleared

C. many illegal protesters were arrested

D. all the stores were still open

A. They will help the owners of the stores do their businesses.

B. They will try their best to arrest other fled illegal protesters

C. They will help the officers injured during the clearances.

D. They will arrange to take more action to finish the clearances.

4This passage is mainly about ______.

A. Hong Kong businesses hit by nearly two months of illegal street occupations
