二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、When learning a foreign language, most people fall back on traditional methods: reading, writing, listening and repeating. But if you also gesture with your arms while studying, you can remember the vocabulary better, even months later. Linking a word to brain areas responsible for movement strengthens the memory of its meaning.

This is the conclusion a research team reached after doing multiple experiments recently. “Our results provide neuroscientific(神经系统科学的)evidence for why learning techniques that involve the body’s motor system should be used more often,” neuroscientist Brian Mathias, a member of the team, said in a news release.

As Mathias and his colleagues describe in The Journal of Neuroscience, they had 22 German-speaking adults learn a total of 90 invented artificial words over four days. While the test adults first heard the new vocabulary, they were shown a video of a person making a gesture that matched the meaning of the word. When the word was repeated, the adults performed the same gesture themselves.

Five months later, they were asked to translate the vocabulary they had learned into German in a multiple-choice test. At the same time, they had an equipment attached to their heads that sent weak magnetic pulses(磁脉冲)to their primary motor cortex(皮层)一the brain area that controls voluntary arm movements. When these interrupting signals were active, the adults found it harder to recall the words accompanied by gestures. When there were no interrupting signals, they found it easier to remember the words. The researchers concluded that the motor cortex contributed to the translation of the vocabulary learned with gestures. This applied to concrete words, such as “camera”, as well as abstract ones, such as “thought”.

“There’s now quite a lot of literature showing that gestures play a role in learning. I think this study takes it a step further and tries to understand why,” says Susan Goldin-Meadow, a psychologist at the University of Chicago. Research like this, as well as brain imaging, suggests the activation of the brain’s motor areas could be a factor. “It’s not necessarily the only reason,” Goldin-Meadow adds, “but it’s probably a contributor.”

【1】What is a suggestion for language learners according to the research findings?

A.Combining listening with writing.

B.Repeating the vocabulary regularly.

C.Moving the body in the learning process.

D.Talking with foreigners in the target language.

【2】What were the test adults asked to do in the first part of the test?

A.Translate the vocabulary into German.

B.Remember about 100 existing words.

C.Translate some foreign words into gestures.

D.Repeat the movements of a person in a video.

【3】What’s the purpose of linking the equipment to the adults’ heads?

A.To affect their motor system.

B.To inspire them to learn actively.

C.To record their brain activity while learning.

D.To stress the role of certain types of gestures.

【4】What’s the purpose of the text?

A.To argue for the importance of doing exercise.

B.To introduce new research into language learning.

C.To explore ways to improve human memory.

D.To call on students to learn foreign languages.

22、How many phone numbers can you remember by heart? It’s probably fewer than you would like. Actually, you are not alone. Out of more than 1,000 Americans who were surveyed, more than half said that they couldn’t recall the phone numbers of their friends and neighbors. In their eyes, there is no point in filling their heads with phone numbers if they are all stored in smart phones that are with them almost all the time.

In fact, most people are suffering from a sort of digital amnesia(健忘). more than 90% of those surveyed agreed that they used the Internet as an online of their brains. Rote memorization(死记硬背) was once an important part of modern education, but we just need a click or slide now. That’s making us worse at remembering things.

Researchers found that when people expected to use the information online, they were less likely to remember actual facts, but more likely to remember how to find them. As a result, we are already becoming ones with our computer tools, growing into interconnected systems that remember less by knowing information than by knowing where the information can be found.

However, some believe it isn’t necessarily a bad thing--maybe it gives them more chances to think through things. We certainly acquire more knowledge now than ever, even if it isn’t all stored in our brains.

Even so, I still believe that there are more risks to this new world of memory beyond losing our ability to recall some information such as who the 15th President was. That kind of information may always be a click away, but the important things are personal ones, like the way your parents smiled at your wedding. It’s harder to recall or find online. If you’re relying on yourself to keep track of those memories, they will be much more meaningful.

【1】Paragraph 1 is mainly used to _______.

A.serve as the background

B.introduce the topic

C.explain new research

D.show some data to readers

【2】What’s the main cause of people’s suffering from digital amnesia?

A.Dealing with too many things

B.Seldom thinking about questions

C.Relying on the internet too much

A.over 90% people are suffering from digital amnesia

B.people can gain knowledge more easily than before

C.rote memorization no longer exists in modern life

D.People find it hard to remember how to find information

【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards people’s memories now?

23、Researchers believe they have found an unknown kind of whale in waters off Mexico's western coast. If others verify the finding, the new whale will be an important discovery among giant animals.

The team of researchers came upon three unusual whales while following a rare group of beaked whales. The whales were near Mexico's distant San Benito Islands, about 500 km south of the U. S. border. Beaked whales usually avoid meeting humans.

Jay Barlow studies sea animals. He noted that it was a very unusual meeting. "It's very rare to even see a beaked whale, and to find a group of friendly beaked whales, it's even rarer, " he said.

Barlow said he and other researchers did not realize they were seeing a possible new kind of whale until later. The group saw something different about the whales' teeth when they studied the photos they took of the animals. The underwater recordings of the whales' calls also suggested they were different from all others.

The researchers are now waiting for test results on water they collected near the whales. There could be skin cells in the water from the whales. If so, they will examine the DNA to make sure whether the whales are a new species.

Though up to 5 meters long, the whales can be hard for scientists to see. That is because they usually swim and eat at depths of around 914 meters. They only come up at times for air. In the deep water, the animals can stay away from their main enemy—killer whales.

Barlow said that finding a new species is a rare event. His team has evidence about the whales that looks like a new discovery. He said the DNA testing would help determine it and he hoped the whales could be determined as a new species. That would bring the number of known beaked whale species to 24.

【1】What does the underlined word "verify” in paragraph 1 probably mean?

A.Value.

B.Refuse.

C.Prove.

D.Research.

【2】What made the researchers believe that they might find a new whale species?

A.The whales' huge size.

B.The whales' sounds.

C.The shape of the whales' mouth.

D.The whales’ friendly behavior.

【3】Why do beaked whales prefer to live in the deep water?

A.To find enough food.

B.To keep themselves safe.

C.To avoid meeting humans.

D.To reduce the need for air.

【4】What was Barlow's attitude towards determining the beaked whales as a new species?

A.Uncaring.

B.Doubtful.

C.Worried.

D.Supportive.

24、BEIJING—Wang Yaping, a taikonaut onboard China’s space station core module (舱), offered people on Earth a zero- gravity musical performance on Tuesday evening to celebrate the Lantern Festival. The space show was shared via a video released at an annual TV gala for the festival celebration. In the video, Wang was seen floating in the space module while playing a guzheng, or Chinese zither. She played a segment of the popular Chinese folk song “Jasmine Flower”.

The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar. People usually hang colorful lanterns, play riddle games and express their wishes and hopes for the future.

The crew members, who traveled to the space station core module on the Shenzhou-13 mission, kept some festive traditions alive as they continued to rotate around the Earth. Commander Zhai Zhigang wrote riddles on red paper scrolls with a brush pen. He displayed the calligraphy together with taikonaut Ye Guangfu and extended festival greetings to the audience. They also sent blessings to athletes at the ongoing Beijing Winter Olympics: “We hope that you all achieve success, gain friendship and harvest your best Olympic experience.”

The video of the space performance was received with much enthusiasm after it was shared on social media platforms. It drew nearly 2 million clicks in one hour after several national media outlets posted it on the Chinese micro-blogging site Sina Weibo. The Weibo account of Zhurong, China’s first rover on Mars, reposted the video, commenting, “The music was so beautiful, and it made me homesick, too.”

The Lantern Festival also marks the last day of the lunar New Year celebration. Though far from home, the festive sentiments in space are the same. The China Manned Space Agency released a video on social media platforms on Tuesday, showing that the taikonauts had decorated the orbiting core module with red lanterns, Chinese knots and paper-cutting decorations. Wearing new clothes, the trio (三人小组) enjoyed the traditions of eating dumplings and posting spring couplets on walls. During the Chinese New Year holiday, they were also spotted watching the Winter Olympics and doing workouts in orbit.

【1】How did the mass enjoy the musical performance according to the text?
