21、As an up-and-coming business model, smart restaurants have been more popular across China since last year. Unlike traditional ones, these restaurants offer an all-new dining experience with robots around. They are characterized by automated (自动化的) services that reduce the need for human waiters and waitresses.

At the restaurants, processes such as ordering, preparing, cooking and serving food, as well as dining and checking out, are all helped by robots and an artificial intelligence (AI) system. The system is also able to identify food about to expire (过期) and properly clean it up before receiving a new order, explained a manager in Haidilao, a smart restaurant in Beijing.

Since last year, there has been a rising need for automated systems to support contact-less dining at restaurants. The dining type was aimed at preventing the further spread of COVID-19 after its outbreak. In China, Haidilao is one of many restaurants that have changed their services.

The changes in restaurants also benefit another industry. To take up the new business opportunity, various robot companies flourish in China, including Siasun and Keenon, which are engaged in the research and development of robots for restaurant services. Two Keenon robots are able to serve 20 to 30 tables, as the information from Keenon showed. It means that such a robot can largely save labor costs and improve efficiency. Moreover, the robots are able to show a QR code to customers to make a payment. Besides these, smart restaurants can also ensure food safety better. With so many advantages, no wonder these smart restaurants have attracted more customers to dine there.

23、Teachers often can fall into the trap of teaching content, paying no attention to children. Many of us have the attitude that “we will put the information out there, and if they don’t get it, they are to blame.”

Several years ago, I had a student named Jeremy in 12th - grade English, in which British literature was taught. I struggled to find ways to make the content interesting. Jeremy didn’t care. Though Jeremy was classified as. gifted, he slept in class every day. I began to get really frustrated. I even began to dislike him.

High school teachers sometimes develop a hands-off attitude. I thought, “OK, Jeremy, if you want to fail my class, fine. I’ve tried everything.” As time went on, I ignored Jeremy. I didn’t ask him questions, or even make eye contact with him.

By accident, I found that Jeremy was capable of much more. One day, I went to the broadcasting classroom to edit a video. On this day, several students were working on an assignment. Then I heard a voice I recognized. I looked up and saw Jeremy was teaching his classmates energetically how to film. My first thought was that Jeremy must have a twin! Suddenly he realized I was sitting in the corner.

Our eyes met. “Mrs. Duff?” he asked with surprise. “You know how to edit video?”

“Yes. I had no idea you were a videographer!” At this, he smiled with pride and explained the project his group was working on. It was clear he had earned his classmates’ respect. And it was suddenly clear to me that I had not really made an effort to know Jeremy at all.

What happened next was amazing. In class, Jeremy stayed awake and completed his work. He passed my class with a B.

What happened? When Jeremy encountered me outside English class, it changed his perspective of me. He realized I wasn’t just some odd lady trying to force him to learn British poetry. Equally important, my perspective about him changed. He wasn’t just the kid who slept in my class.

I’m not proud that I didn’t make a better effort to know Jeremy before the encounter in the broadcast room. I told myself I had tried everything, but I had not stepped outside of my little English world at all.

24、When I was in the fifth grade and Mr. Gardner asked a question, my hand would often shoot up in enthusiasm. After giving me a few opportunities, he would try to give other students a chance. My hand, though, would remain in the air, and after some time, I’d start waving it around. Then, there was the time I entered drumming classes. But all we were allowed to do in the first class was practice one beat over and over again. I never went back.

I would have done terribly in the Stanford Marshmallow (果浆软糖) Experiment. In this classic study, researchers gave children a choice between one marshmallow right away and two later. The results showed that those who could wait 15 minutes ended up scoring 210 points higher on the SAT, an examination that American high school students take before they go to college.

So clearly, delaying(延迟的) gratification or bearing up under pain have their benefits. It needs patience, which keeps us from being stuck to ideas formed previously, and helps us let go of our strong desire for consequences. We come to accept that we don’t always or immediately know what is best, and learn to recognize that our reality is in constant changes. Patience improves our understanding of deeper truths and helps us expand our views.

The journey of patience is rooted in knowing that our present reality will finally give way to changes. But changes won’t always happen when we think they should, and patience with ourselves comes from accepting that there are things we can control and things we can’t. And though we must make great efforts to keep pushing the boundaries of our awareness and to improve our ability to rest in comfort in the present moment, how fast we develop isn’t up to us.

That same fifth grader who couldn’t wait to speak out answers now sees the value of meeting questions with a heart of patience.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Parents often notice a return of the “terrible twos” when their children enter adolescence, who are struggling to be independence, but they lack the language needed to express the complexity of their emotions, and then comes the seemingly automatic response of “No!” or “That’s not fair!” when asked to do anything by parents. It seems as if our current society both reflects and encourage these behaviors, as media often shows rude teenage stars get a laugh from their rude words aimed at adults.

Parents who are concerned about stopping their teens’ independence, worried about involving in a power struggle that they might not be able to win, or just feeling helpless in the face of the teens’ strongly expressed emotions, may simply give up when their children refused to do what is asked.

It’s important for parents to understand that teenagers do not have the same control of their impulses(冲动) that adults do. Parents need to provide support and guidance. Part of providing such support and guidance is setting clear limits on what kind of behavior will be tolerated, and what results exist for the behavior that is not allowed.
