What should you do if there is a fire at school? Do you know how to protect yourself in a large crowd? Every year since 1996, on the last Monday of the last week in March, the National Day of Education on the Safety of Elementary and Middle School Students is held. This year it falls on March 29. It offers us a chance to learn more about school safety.
A 2020 survey from People’s Daily shows that the worst accidents at school were a result of stampedes(踩踏), fires and traffic.
Experts suggest that right safety measures could avoid 80 percent of these accidents, China Education Daily reported.
When facing an accident, the first and most important rule is to stay calm. But different accidents mean different ways of dealing with them.
A stampede happens in a place where a large crowd is gathered. When students around you begin to push, stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If you fall down in a moving crowd, cover your head with both hands. Lean to one side, curl your body and bend your legs.
When there’s a fire, you can’t get outside by stairs. You can get to the fire escape through a fire exit door or a window. Stay calm and follow teachers’ instructions. Leave the classroom and use a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and nose so that you don’ t breathe in smoke.
If you take a school bus on your way home or to school, remember to wear your seatbelt and don’t walk around when the bus is moving. If you walk to school or go by bike, follow traffic rules. Wait for the green traffic light, and look left and right for cars before you cross the road.
【1】What do experts suggest to avoid school accidents?
A.Following the teachers’ instructions.
B.Stopping the students running and playing.
C.Teaching students right safety measures.
D.Holding a safety meeting every year.
【2】When there’s a fire, you should do the following things EXCEPT ________.
A.use a piece of cloth to cover your mouth and nose
B.stay calm and follow teachers’ instructions

【3】What is the passage mainly about?

B.Why school safety is important.
C.Never be afraid during a fire.
D.Introduce the results of a new survey.

On Saturday, an underwater volcano(火山)in Tonga erupted(爆发)in the South Pacific Ocean. Tonga is an island nation in the South Pacific ocean, home to about 105, 000 people. The volcano, known as Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, is located off the coast of Tonga. Even though the volcano was underwater, it sent lots of gas, ash(灰烬)and stones 12 miles into the sky.
It took a while to get reports from Tonga because the event knocked out internet service in the area. Like most island nations, Tonga gets its internet through a cable that runs deep under the sea. Experts say it’s not yet clear whether the cable was broken during the event or simply lost power.
A four-foot wave hit the capital, Nuku’alofa. People in low-lying areas were forced to go to higher ground. There are reports of serious damage in Tonga. Many houses near the shore were flooded. At present, the biggest danger is probably from the smoke and ash from the volcano that has covered much of Tonga. The ash makes the air dangerous to breathe, and it is believed to have polluted many sources of drinking water.
New Zealand and Australia have sent teams to Tonga to help out. Some of the teams will use airplanes to get a better idea of the damage across the island nation. The large cloud of ash high above Tonga is making it impossible to get a good picture of what’s happening in the area from high in the air.
【1】What information can we get about the volcano in paragraph 1?
A.It is underwater and in an island nation.
B.More than 105, 000 people live next to it.
C.It’s quite far away from the South Pacific Ocean.
D.It’s under the ocean and sent stones into the water.
【2】What does the underlined expression “knocked out” mean?
A.changed
B.improved
C.destroyed
D.brought
【3】Which of the following can we infer(推断)from paragraph 3?
A.The ash from the volcano has covered much of Tonga.
B.The ash makes the air in Tonga dangerous to breathe.
C.Houses in low-lying areas were completely damaged.
D.People in Tonga will be short of clean drinking water.
【4】Why is it hard for the teams to know exactly what’s happening in the area?
A.There is still a lot of ash in the air above Tonga.
B.The airplanes cannot take off because of the ash.
C.The teams don’t know how to take a good picture.
D.The clouds in the sky stop the teams seeing clearly.
【5】Where can we probably read this article?
A.In a comic book.
B.In a newspaper.
C.In a science fiction.
D.In a fashion magazine.
27、I did something wrong today.
While at the beach this afternoon, I met a boy called Bob. We talked a lot. He said that it was fun playing on the cliffs (悬崖). I told him that I was not allowed to go near that place (Mom and Dad had always told me it was dangerous to play there). He called me a coward. I wanted to show him that I was just as brave (勇敢) as him, so I agreed to go with him.
We wanted to make our way down to explore (探索) the area, so Bob started to climb down and I followed him. Unluckily, some rocks came down after us. One of them nearly hit my head. We could not get back up. We shouted and shouted for help, but for a long time no help came. I was really scared. I wanted to cry. Then, we heard some sounds. Someone had heard us. A woman tied (系) a rope around herself while a man at the cliff top held the rope. She made her way down to save us.
