二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Identical twins Kathy and Sophie arrived at college last year and determined to strike out on independent paths, so they had requested rooms in different dorms. While Kathy got along with her roommate, Sophie was miserable. She and her roommate silently warred over matters ranging from when the lights should be turned off to how the furniture should be arranged. Finally, they divided the room in two and gave up on oral communication. During this time, Sophie kept seeking comfort from Kathy. Before long, the two wanted to live together again. Sophie’s roommate eventually agreed to move out.

Sophie’s ability to solve her dilemma by rooming with her identical twin is unusual, but the conflict she faced is not. Most roommate conflicts spring from such small, annoying differences rather than from grand disagreements over abstract philosophical principles. One person likes quiet, while the other person spends two hours a day practicing the trumpet. One eats only organically produced vegetables and loves animals, while the other likes wearing fur and enjoys cutting up frogs in biology class.

When personalities don’t mix, the excitement of being away at college can quickly fade away. Moreover, roommates can affect each other’s psychological health. A recent study reports that depression in college roommates is often passed from one person to another.

Many schools have started conflict resolution programs to calm tensions that otherwise can build up like a volcano preparing to explode, ultimately resulting in physical violence. Some colleges have resorted to“roommate contracts“ that all new students fill out and sign after attending a seminar on roommate relations. Students detail behavioral guidelines for their room, including acceptable hours for study and sleep, a policy for use of each other’s possessions. Some schools try to head off the feud before it begins by using computerized matching. Students are put together on the basis of their responses to housing form questions.

22、   Rats and other animals need to be highly tuned to social signals from others so that can identify friends to cooperate with and enemies to avoid. To find out if this extends to non-living beings, Loleh Quinn at the University of California, San Diego, and her colleagues tested whether rats can detect social signals form robotic rats.

They housed eight adult rats with two types of robotic rat—one social and one asocial (不爱社交的)—for 5 our days. The robotic rats resembled a bigger version of a computer mouse with wheels to move around and colorful markings.

During the experiment, the social robot rat followed the living rats around, played with the same toys, and opened caged doors to let trapped rats escape. Meanwhile, the asocial robot simply moved forwards and backwards and side to side.

Next, the researchers trapped the robots in cages and gave the rats the opportunity to release them by pressing a button. Across 18 trials each, the living rats were 52 percent more likely on average to set the social robot free than the asocial one. This suggests that the rats perceived the social robot as a genuine social being. They may have bonded more with the social robot, because it displayed behaviours like communal (共同的) exploring and playing. “This could lead to the rats better remembering having freed it earlier, and wanting the robot to return the favour when they get trapped,” says Quinn.

The readiness of the rats to befriend the social robot was surprising given its plain design. The finding shows how sensitive rats are to social signals, even when they come from basic robots. Similarly, children tend to treat robots as if they are fellow beings, even when they display simple social signals. “We humans seem to be fascinated by robots, and it turns out other animals are too,” says Wiles.

【1】Quin and her colleagues conducted a test to see if rats can ________.

A.pick up social signals from non-living rats

B.distinguish friends from enemies

C.learn sociable skills through training

D.send out warning messages to their fellows

【2】What did the social robot do during the experiment?

A.It followed the asocial robot.

B.It made friends with toys.

C.It set the trapped rats free.

D.It moved around alone.

【3】Why did the rats release the social robot according to Quinn?

A.They tried to practice a means of escape.

B.They expected it to do the same in return.

C.They wanted to display their intelligence

D.They considered it an interesting game.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

A.Rats are highly adaptable to new surroundings.

B.Rats are more socially active than other animals.

C.Rats behave differently from children in socializing.

D.Rats are more sensitive to social signals than expected.

23、Several years ago, KenKeegan organized a gathering in Las Vegas, with a group of architects involved, who were asked what it would take to design a public school which used 50 percent less energy, cost much less to build and obviously improved students learning. “I think half of them fell off their chairs,” Keegan says.

Keegan is in charge of the management school facilities for Clark County, Nevada, a district roughly the size of Massachusetts. By 2028, 143,000 additional students will enter the already crowded public-education system. Keegan needs 73 new schools to house them. Four architecture teams have nearly finished designing primary school prototypes. With the intention of   constructing their schools in 2019, the district will assess how well the schools perform before allowing the winners to conduct their designs in 50 to 70 new buildings.

Green schools keep emerging all over, but in Clark County, which stands out for its vastness, such aggressive targets are difficult because design requirements like more natural light for students go against the realities of a desert climate. “One of the biggest obstacles is getting the right site orientation,” Mark. Mc, a director at SH Architecture, says. His team recently completed a high school in Las Vegas. “You have the same building, same set of windows, but if   its orientation is incorrect and it faces the sun, it will be really expensive to cool.”

Surprisingly, the man responsible for one of the most progressive green-design competitions has doubts about ideas of eco-friendly buildings. “I don’t believe in the new green religion,” Keegan says, “Some of the building technologies that you put forward are impractical. I’m only interested in those that work.” But he doesn’t mind if some green features inspire students. He says he hopes to set up green energy systems that allow them to learn about the process of harvesting wind and solar power. “You never know what’s going to start the interest of a child to study math and science,” he says.

【1】What can be inferred from the architects’ reaction in Paragraph 1?

A.Half of them lost balance in excitement.

B.Disbelief was obviously seen.

C.Most of them expressed little interest.

D.They burst into cheers.

【2】Which order of steps should be followed in carrying out the project?

A.Assessment-Construction-Design.

B.Assessment-Design-Construction.

C.Design-Construction-Assessment.

D.Design-Assessment-Construction.

【3】What is the biggest challenge Clark County faces if they are to build green schools?

A.The large size.

B.Limited facilities.

C.The desert climate.

D.Poor natural resources.

【4】In Keegan’s opinion, the ideas of green schools are .

A.questionable

B.out of date

C.advanced

D.practical.

24、In France, a lot of energy goes into one’s personal appearance. Clothing is a big part of Parisian culture; after all, this is one of the world fashion capitals.

Parisians like simple, classic pieces that are timeless. Must-have pieces such as a good pair of jeans, a trench coat, and basic knitwear are always good to have on hand. Parisians don’t really like clothing to be colorful or ostentatious, especially not something to be worn for an ordinary day out. Black, white and different shades of beige are common sightings around Paris’ streets.

Classic goes for shoes, too. A quality pair of leather boots, loafers (休闲鞋) or heels can be paired with anything, provided they are in a shade of black or brown. Comfort is key, since most Parisians do a lot of walking. However, you’ll rarely notice Parisians wearing open-toed shoes. Younger generation Parisians are becoming part of sports shoes culture, though it is unlikely to see an elder Parisian wearing any form of them in public.

Speaking of berets (贝雷帽), a decent beret is an important item for most Parisians. It would be far too general to say that all Parisians are fond of the beret, but the vast majority can appreciate their place in fashion history. They also love having a way of covering their hair when unexpected wind or rain happens in the city of light!

Parisians are not about logos (商标). Contrary to Italians, Parisians prefer not to see any kind of printed logo on clothing, handbags or shoes, unless it is extremely small and subtle. Hoodies with an oversized logo printed down the front is a no-no. Something to keep in mind is that just because Parisians are not into logos, this does not mean they are not into name brands (名牌). On the contrary, the French love luxury fashion and name branded clothing. Parisians know their brands, and they don’t need logos to tell them when something is of a particular fashion house, or when something is real or fake.

【1】What does the underlined word “ostentatious” mean in the second paragraph?

A.Simple in design.

B.Of an old style.

C.Enhancing creativity.

D.Attracting attention.

【2】What will an elder Parisian probably wear in public?

A.White boots.

B.Black loafers.

C.Open-toed shoes.

D.Comfortable sports shoes.

【3】How do Parisians like the beret?

A.Most of them like to have one.

B.They think it too old-fashioned.

C.They think it goes well with long hair.

D.Most of them wear it for an ordinary day out.

【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Parisians don’t like name brands.

B.Parisians aren’t into oversized logos.

C.Parisians don’t care about what is in fashion.

D.Parisians prefer not to see any logo on clothing.
