24、Lee put the body of a 2-year-old cat on a small bed surrounded by flowers. Then he let the cat’s owner say a last goodbye. Lee, 26, is a pet undertaker.“We send off 400 to 500 pets each year, and there’s a great need of pet funerals (葬礼), ” he told China News.

Keeping pets has become a fashion for young people in China and people are more than willing to pay for whatever their pets need. A report says, from 2019 to 2021, China’s pet market grew by almost 18 percent and hit 348.8 billion yuan in value in 2021.

In addition to basic services, pet owners are increasingly paying for many new services, such as training, pet funerals, insurance, photography and entertainment. The growing pet market has also given birth to a large number of new pet-related jobs.

Liu Wei, 33, is a famous pet detective in Shanghai. He and his team work on finding families’ lost pets. “We have successfully helped find more than 1,000 pets. Besides cats and dogs, there are other pets like birds, lizards and hamsters.” Liu said.

According to Liu, being a pet detective requires a sense of responsibility (责任), kindness and love for animals. Pet detectives also need to be clear-eyed. They also make good use of high-tech products, such as infrared thermal imaging devices (红外热成像仪).

“Searching for pets needs lots of technical knowledge, for example, when we look for cats, knowing their habits is a must” said Liu. “In many big cities, cats and dogs have become an important part of many families and are taken good care of. What we look for are not just pets, but family members. ”

Apart from pet undertakers and detectives, some people work as pet food testers, pet sitters and pet trainers.A study says that the booming (繁荣的) pet market shows people’s improved living standards.

25、My mother loves flowers. We live next door to each other, so she often spends much time planting flowers in my garden. In summer, she often makes colourful bouquets(花束) and puts them inside the houses—both hers and mine.

One year, shortly before Christmas, a local flower shop offered an activity for mothers in each month of the next year. It seemed to be a great way to thank her for all of the flowers she had given me through the years. I couldn’t wait the new year so that I could give a bouquet to her!

After the Christmas, in early January, I drove her to the flower shop to pick up her first month’s bouquet. The small bouquet would hardly(几乎不) fill a small vase(花瓶). I was so embarrassed(尴尬的). “Mum, I’m sorry,” I told her. “I didn’t know how skimpy that bouquet was.” She looked at me and smiled. “It’s okay,” she said. “It allows me to enjoy the beauty of each one better.”

I was amazed at what she said. It helped me realize something more important—we often fail to enjoy the beauty of each thing when we have too many good things.

Mum! Thanks for helping me understand that less is sometimes more.

26、Food is a major part of every culture. After all, everyone needs to eat! But each country has its own traditions on what people eat and when.

Egypt

Egyptians commonly start the day with a drink, sometimes going with bread. Breakfast can be eaten any time after this but before the days main meal. In the past, this main meal was served at around 3:00 p.m. But now people work longer hours and eat when they get home at around 6:00 p.m. Dinner parties are held later, around 9:00 p.m.

Most Egyptian meals include bread or ice, cooked vegetables and beans or meat.

France

France is known for its fine cooking, and its people take food seriously. Most eat three meals a day at fixed times and never snack between meals. Breakfast is a light meal of bread and coffee. They eat lunch at around 1:00 p.m. and a dinner with multiple courses after 8:00 p.m.

The French consider eating a social activity. Eating alone is hard to see, and eating while doing something else is unheard-of. The French take time to enjoy their meals and visitors should do the same.

Brazil

Like the French, Brazilians usually eat a light breakfast. Lunch, the largest meal of the day, usually consists of meat, rice, potatoes, beans and vegetables. Between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., people enjoy a smaller meal with their families.

Brazilians dont mind eating a hurried or light meal and sometimes buy food from street carts (手推车). But they always finish eating before walking away.

The United States

Americans ancestors came from many countries, so American eating habits differ. Some take time to prepare and eat a hot breakfast. Others take a bagel (面包圈) while rushing out the door or just skip breakfast. For lunch, most Americans eat a sandwich or leftovers. Traditionally, families got together for a large evening meal around 6:00, but now busy schedules force many families to eat in turns. American restaurant servings tend to be huge.
