A businessman had a bird which he kept in a cage. He was going to India, the land from where the bird came. He asked the bird whether he could bring anything back for him. Instead, the bird asked for his freedom, but was refused. Then he asked the businessman to visit a jungle in India and announce his captivity (囚禁)to the free birds who were there.
The businessman did so, and almost immediately after he had spoken, a wild bird, just like his own, fell senseless out of a tree and landed on the ground near his feet. The businessman thought that this must be a relative of his own bird, and felt sad that he should have caused this death.
When he got home, the bird asked him whether he had brought good news from India. "No,” said the businessman, "I fear that my news is bad. One of your relatives collapsed and fell at my feet when I mentioned your captivity.”
As soon as these words were spoken, the businessman’s bird collapsed and fell to the bottom of the cage. "The news of his relative’s death has killed him too, "thought the businessman. Sadly he picked up the bird and put it on the windo-sill. At once the bird got up and flew to a nearby tree. "Now you know, "he said, "that what you thought was disaster was in fact_______. 26、When we are children, the holidays seem to last forever. But later, we may find that time just seems to fly by. Why does time seem to pass faster as we get older?
According to the Daily Mail, our brains degrade as we get older. That decreases the amount of information we can deal with in a single day. “The human mind senses time changing when the perceived (感知到的) images change,” Adrian Bejan from Duke University, the US, told the Daily Mail. “The present is different from the past because the mental viewing (思想观念) has changed, not because somebody’s clock rings.”
Infants (幼儿), for example, move their eyes much more often than adults (成年人) because they’re processing (处理) images at a faster rate. They deal with a large amount of information and do many things in a single day. This makes them feel like a single day lasts for a long time. However, as people get older, fewer images are processed in the same amount of time. Therefore, older people receive less information during a day than younger people. This causes things to seem as though they were happening more quickly.
Apart from the degradation of our brains, some psychological (心理的;心理学的) reasons also make us experience time differently.
People may measure (测量) time by the number of memorable (值得纪念的) events that can be recalled (回忆) within a certain period. When we think about our youth (青春), we may remember a life packed with first-time activities, for example, our first-time traveling without our parents, or our first date. We experienced these events so vividly that time then seemed to have passed very slowly. According to David Eagleman of the Baylor College of Medicine in the US, recalling these memories makes us feel like they took forever.
Many adults find life is routine and sometimes dull. For this reason, when they look back, they might feel like there are not many exciting things to remember. Therefore, time seems to be moving faster to them.
【1】What does the underlined word “degrade” mean?
A.Become better.
B.Become worse.
C.Remain the same.
D.Become smaller.
【2】How do people sense time changing according to Adrian Bejan?
A.It depends on how their clocks change.
B.It depends on how the views around them change.
C.It depends on how often they move their eyes.
D.It depends on how the images they perceived change.
【3】What is the purpose of the fifth paragraph?
A.To tell us that first-time activities are vivid and memorable.
B.To tell us that first-time events can make time pass slowly.
C.To tell us that psychological reasons make people sense time differently.
D.To tell us that people should measure time by the number of memorable events.
【4】Why does time seem to pass faster as we get older?
A.Because our life will become routine and dull when we grow older.
B.Because the degradation of our brains will make it slower to recall memories.
C.Because we’ll deal with less information in the same amount of time.
D.Because we won’t have first-time activities when we grow older.
【5】In which part of a magazine can you probably read the text?

27、 One day my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. The other woman my wife wanted me to visit was my mother, who has been living alone for 19 years, but the demands of my work and my three children had made it impossible to visit her often.
That Friday after work, when I arrived at her house, my mother waited in the door with her coat on. She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary(周年).
We went to a restaurant that, although not classical, was very nice and comfortable. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down, I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print. "It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small," she said. "Then it's time that you relax and let me return the favor," I answered.
During the dinner, we had a pleasant conversation nothing special but catching up on recent events of each other’s life. We talked so much that we missed the movie.
As we arrived at her house later, she said, “I’ll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you.” I agreed.
A few days later, my mother died of a heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didn’t have a chance to do anything for her.
Some time later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt(收据) from the same place Mother and I had dined. A note said: “I paid this bill in advance. I wasn’t sure that I could be there; but I paid for two plates—one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, son.”
At that moment, I understood the importance of saying in time: ‘I LOVE YOU’ and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve.Nothing in life is more important than your family. Give them the time they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till some “other” time.
