25、Today we are developing a new idea—Money is the measure of all things. More and more, people are being judged by what they own, and not by their good qualities. This is certainly true among many people in China.
According to a survey that was done in 2013, China is the most materialistic(物欲的) country in the world. Twenty-three percent of Chinese said they measured success by the things they owned (cars, homes, jewelry, designer clothes) compared with just 21 percent in America, 20 percent in Canada, and 16 percent in Britain.
This love of materialistic has spread into schools where some kids like to show off their Apple Watches, iPhone7 and expensive running shoes. Some poorer students now feel worried by their richer classmates and sad by their poor families. In some cases this has affected their performance in school.
But having rich parents doesn’t automatically(自动地) bring good grades and having poor parents doesn’t certainly bring bad grades. It is hard wok that is the key to success, not the cost of your running shoes. And hard work is what develops good characters, not money, that should be the measure of all things.
【1】What is the measure of all things for many people in China?
A. Success. B. The good quality. C. The good grades. D. Money.
【2】According to the survey, how many Chinese judged success by the things they owned?
A. 23% of Chinese. B. 21% of Chinese. C. 20% of Chinese. D. 16% of Chinese.
【3】Why do some students like showing off expensive things in school?
A. Because their families are very rich.
B. Because of the worship of materialism.
C. Because expensive things can bring good grades.
D. Because they are good at all kinds of subjects.
【4】What can we infer from the passage?
A. Poor students can hardly get good grades.
B. Rich students have the worship of materialism.
C. We should correct the worship of materialism.
D. Canadians have the least the worship of materialism in rate.
26、 Adults understand what it feels like to be flooded with objects. Why do we often think that more is more when it comes to kids and their own things? The good news is that I can help my kids learn earlier than I did how to live more with less.
I found the pre-holidays a good time to encourage young children to donate less-used things, and it worked. Because of our efforts, our daughter Georgia did decide to donate a large bag of toys to a little girl whose mother was unable to pay for her holiday because of illness. She chose to sell a few larger objects that were less often used when we promised to put the money into her school fund(基金) (our daughter is serious about becoming a doctor).
For weeks, I’ve been thinking of bigger, deeper questions: How do we make it a habit for them? And how do we train ourselves to help them live with need and use less? Yesterday, I sat with my son, Shepherd, made up my mind to test my own thought on this. I decided to play with him with only one toy for as long as it would keep his interest. I expected that one toy would keep his attention for about five minutes, ten minutes, max. I chose a red rubber ball. We passed it, he tried to put it in his mouth, he tried throwing it, rolling it, sitting on it. It was totally, completely enough for him. Before I knew it an hour had passed and it was time to move on to lunch.
We both became interested in this kind of playing together. He had my full attention and I had his. My little experiment to find joy in a single object worked for both of us.
【1】What do the words “more is more” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.The more, the better. B.Enough is enough.
C.More money, more worries. D.Earn more and spend more.
【2】What made Georgia agree to sell some of her objects?
A.Saving up for her holiday. B.Raising money for a poor girl.
C.Adding the money to her fund. D.Giving the money to a sick mother.
【3】What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Take It or Leave It B.A Lesson from Kids
C.Live More with Less D.The Pleasure of Giving
27、
“Hello, everyone! Welcome to Tiangong Class.” A special lecture (讲座) began on Tiangong space station about 400 kilometers above Earth on Dec. 9, 2021. Lasting for about an hour, the space lecture was given to millions of students. Three astronauts (宇航员), Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu showed how they live and work on the space station and did some interesting experiments (实验). This space lecture was quite different from the one 8 years ago. The “classroom” was bigger. It was China’s first extraterrestrial (地球外的) lecture series.
Plants in space —The lab (实验室) of the space station has many conditions that the Earth lab does not have, such as the weightless environment. ① The important jobs for astronauts included cell observation (细胞观察) and “feeding” plant life. In the lecture, Ye showed students experiments about cell growth in a weightless environment.
Use it or lose it —The human body grows with the pull of Earth’s gravity (重力). But in space, our bones and muscles (肌肉) don’t need to support our body’s weight. ② This will cause bone and muscle loss. Astronauts can lose up to 20 percent of their muscles after a couple of weeks. That is dangerous for astronauts because they will be too weak to work.
③ . Zhai introduced a special uniform called “penguin suit”. Wearing it, astronauts can keep their muscles strong. Wang also showed students how she walked on a machine, and rode a bicycle. Astronauts exercise like that every day to prevent muscle loss.
Young voices —Students were really interested in the lecture. ④ A 13-year-old boy from Tianjin said, “The most exciting thing I learned is that astronauts ‘fly’ all the time because there is no gravity (重力).”
Look! It was an eye-opening experience that would light up students’ interest in science, wasn’t it?
