24、My Dad used to say he knew I would be a singer. When I was a baby, I was always singing loudly. Dad was a big sports fan, but he was happy I loved music.
After dinner, Dad would often ask me to sing. He always said I sang I Will Always Love You much better than Whitney Houston!
At every school concert he cheered me on. The look of pride on his face made me happy. My life was full of concert, singing lessons and laughter. Though my mom and brothers helped me, they did not share our love for music.
Our lives changed when my Dad was told that he had cancer (癌症). We always hoped that something would happen and he would get better, but the doctor told us that they could not save him. About a week before my dad died, he fell into a coma (昏迷). The nurse said even though Dad didn’t reply, he could still hear me. The nurse said I should sing him a song. I sang one of our favorites. As I sang, my dad gave a big smile, and clapped (鼓掌).
I will always remember that smile. I was so pleased to know that Dad had heard me sing one more song. My Dad passed away On May 14, 2020. It was hard to believe he was so full of life. I don’t know how to say how much I miss him. Now I have all the memories of him and his beautiful smile deep inside my heart. 26、The government in China plans to end its one-child policy and let families have two children.
The plan was announced on Thursday after high-level political meetings in Beijing. A Chinese Communist Party statement gave a number of reasons for the change in policy. The statement said the change is meant to balance development, stop a falling birth rat (出生率) and strengthen the country’s labor force (劳动力).
China, with the largest population in the world, started the one-child policy in 1980. But the government allow only a small number of couples to have two children. For example, some families in the countryside could have two children, if the first-born child is a girl.
In 2013, the Chinese government gave other couples a chance to have two children if one of was an only child.
Jiang Quanbao, a teacher and population expert, explained how Chinese families react to the newest policy. “Too many young people in the cities are no longer interested in having a second child, ” he said. “People in the countryside are more interested. But some of them are already allowed to have two children.”
At the end of 2014, China had a population of 1.37 billion people. A total of 800 million of them have jobs. But the labor market population will drop in 35 years. That is to say, the country will be in great need of labor by the year 2050. With the two-child policy, an increase in births can solve this problem.

27、Will it matter if you don’t take your breakfast? A short time ago, a test was given in the United States. People of different ages, from 12 to 83, were asked to have a test. During the test, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Scientists wanted to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten different kinds of breakfasts.
The results show that if a person eats a right breakfast, he or she will work better than if he or she has no breakfast. If a student has fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen more carefully in class.
