二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Picture this: You’re playing soccer with friends. As you kick the ball, you realize the bottom of your foot feels cold and wet. You turn your sneaker up to look at the sole (鞋底). A big crack(裂缝) is letting water from the ground in. When you get home, you throw your ruined sneakers away.

Now imagine another ending to the story. You don’t throw the sneakers away. Instead, you push the two sides of the cracked sole together so they’re touching. You leave the sneaker in a warm spot. A few hours later, the crack disappears.

Thanks to Qiming Wang, a professor at the University of Southern California, a self-healing (自我修复的) sneaker sole could soon become reality. Wang and his team have invented 3D printable rubber that could fix itself. When it’s exposed to heat, it causes a chemical reaction that bonds its atoms back together. The material could be used to3D print not only sneaker soles, but also toys, bike tires, even satellites.

To 3D print a self-healing object, the first step is to make a model of it on the computer. The model is “divided” into 100 smaller pictures. This first picture is projected onto a thin laver (层) of the rubber, which starts as a liquid. The rubber takes on the shape of the picture, and the light from the projection turns it from liquid to solid. The next picture is projected on another layer of liquid rubber on top of the first one. The final, complete shape is built up layer by layer like this.

Many footwear companies want to buy this technology. First, though, Wang and his team have to try to make the material in different levels of hardness. Wang thinks it will take two or three years for their material to show up in shoes we buy in stores.

One exciting thing about the special rubber is the amount of waste it can reduce, Plus, it can self-heal “more than 10 times”. When it can’t heal anymore, it can be recycled.

1How does the author introduce the topic?

A.By asking questions for readers to think about.

B.By presenting a possible situation in our life.

C.By telling an interesting story about himself.

D.By comparing different research findings.

2What is the key to the self-healing process?

A.Proper temperature.

B.Strong light.

C.Enough water.

D.Fresh air.

3What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The process of 3D printing a self-healing object.

B.The steps to make the self-healing rubber.

C.The material of self-healing objects.

D.The advantages of 3D printing.

4What do we know about the special rubber?

B.It is environment-friendly.

C.It has a very short usage period.

D.It is being tried by footwear companies.

It’s been five years since Björk last released an album, but now the Icelandic icon (偶像) is back with a deeply inventive set called Fossora. Every sound on the record feels as if it’s springing into the mix from a different direction, as her energetic voice shares space with everything from bass clarinets (低音单簧管) to the voices of Björk’s own creation. Fossora was inspired, at least in part, by the death of the singer’s mother, but joy also exists.

23、It has been almost six and a half years since the American music group Pearl Jam published its tenth album. That changed Friday when the band dropped its eleventh collection, Gigaton. Critics (批评家) have noted that this new album includes hard rock. Entertainments Weekly called the music “a gathering storm of guitars”. In other words, there is some loud and wild music on Gigaton. But most reviewers agree that Pearl Jam continues to experiment with less traditional rock and roll sound on the album.

But back to the name of the album — Gigaton can also mean the weight mass equal to 1 billion tons. The word is most often used these days in stories related to climate science and environmental damage. In fact, former U. S. President Obama famously defined the word during a speech about climate change in Alaska and the Arctic. When discussing the huge yearly loss of ice from Alaska’s glaciers, he compared the amount to the size of the national Mall in Washington, as if it were a solid (固体的) block that stood almost 700 meters tall.

And climate change issues are at the heart of Pearl Jam’s Gigaton. The album picture shows icefalls in Svalbard, Norway. Svalbard is one of the northernmost places where humans live in the world. Some climate scientists say it is warming faster than any other place. Pearl Jam has spent most of its 30-year existence on environmental causes. The band and its members have won honors for raising money, climate change educational efforts and more. They also put money into environmental health projects to reduce the group’s carbon footprint.

Pearl Jam was officially introduced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. The lead singer Vedder’s opening comments were about the environment. “So, climate change is real,” he said. “And we...cannot...cannot be the generation that history will look back upon and wonder why they didn’t do anything possible to solve the biggest danger in our time.”

【1】What can we know about the new album Gigaton?

A.It includes more loud music.

B.It receives fans’ high praise.

D.It has new musical elements (要素).

【2】Why are Obama’s words mentioned?

B.To call on people to focus on glaciers.

A.Fund healthcare projects.

B.Build houses in Svalbard.

D.Team climate scientists up.

【4】What can be the best title of the text?

A.Pearl Jam’s New Album Makes a Hit

B.Gigaton: a Gathering Storm of Guitars

C.Pearl Jam: an Famous Band in the World

D.A New Album Rocks Hard on Climate Change

24、It is said that there’s no such things as a free lunch, but even if you manage to bag a bargain meal, it will not taste as good as a more expensive choice, according to scientists.

A new study has found that restaurant goers who pay more for the food is tastier than offered for a smaller price. The experts think that people tend to associate cost with quality and this changes their perception(感知)of how food tastes.

Scientists at Cornell University studied the eating habits of 139 people who enjoy an Italian buffet in a restaurant. The price of the food was set by the researchers at either $4 or $8 for the all–you–can–eat meal. Customers were asked to rate how good the food tasted, the quality of the restaurant and to leave their names.

The experiment showed that the people who paid $8 enjoyed their meal 11% more than those who ate the “cheaper” buffet. Interestingly those that paid for the $4 buffet said they felt guiltier about loading up their plates and felt that they overate. However, the scientists said that both groups ate around the same quantity of food in total.

Brian Wansink, a professor of consumer behavior at the university, said: “we were fascinated to find that pricing has little effect on how much one eats, but a huge effect on how you interpret the experience.” He thinks that people enjoyed their food more as they associated cost with quality and that small changes to a restaurant can change how tasty people find their meals.

In a previous study, researchers from the university showed that people who eat in bright lighting consume more than eat in less brightly lit areas.
