二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Global warming happens when greenhouse gases trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere, which increases the temperature. This is like when heat is trapped in a car. On a hot day, the car gets hotter when it is out in the parking lot. This is because the heat and light from the sun can get into the car, by going through the windows, but it can’t get back out. This is what the greenhouse effect does to the earth .The heat and light can get through the atmosphere, but it can’t get out. As a result, the temperature rises.

Sometimes the temperature can change in a way that helps us. The greenhouse effect makes the earth appropriate for people to live on. Without it,the earth would be freezing,or it would be burning hot. It would be freezing at night because we would not get the sun’s heat and light .During the day, especially during the summer, it would be burning because the sun would be up with no atmosphere to filter(过滤)it,so people, plants, and animals would be exposed to all the light and heat.

Although the greenhouse effect makes the earth able to have people living on it,if there gets to be too many gases, the each can get unusually warmer, and many plants, animals.and people will die. Plants would die because they would not be able to take the heat .This would cause us to have less food to eat,and it would also limit the food that animals have. With less food for the animals that we need to survive we would even have less food. Gradually, people, plants, and animals would all die of hunger.

People are doing many things to try to stop global warming .One thing is carpooling—driving with someone to a place that you are both going to. Another thing is being more careful about leaving electrical devices turned on. Now,more people are even riding buses or bikes to lower the amount of greenhouse gases in the air .Although adults do many things to help stop global warming, kids call do just as much.

22、Everything is practice. When we learn ballet, gymnastics or soccer, we practice these movements in a conscious and repeated way. Through planned and repeated practice, we become good at these movements. 【1】 There's more to life than non-stop practice. Conscious living is the key to real health, growth and success.

Each day, we repeat movements, patterns of thought and behavior, and ways of interacting with others. With repeated practice, we become good at these things. If you constantly check Facebook or Twitter, that is practice. 【2】

In most cases, your actions are driven largely by your unconscious mind and most of the time you allow your unconscious and conditioned habits to take over. When you are conscious of what you are doing, you can decide whether this is an action or a thought pattern you want to practice or if there's an alternative you'd rather be good at. 【3】 The reality is that you won't always remember to do this, so remind yourself.

【4】 Studies show that the concept of life control is extremely necessary to your health, happiness and success. Through conscious living you can learn to listen more deeply to those around you and your own inner voice.

Changing your habits within a short space of time is not a practical solution in that the habit you're really changing is due to repeated practice. 【5】 Give yourself permission to make mistakes without feelings of guilt.

A.As a matter of fact, our entire life is like this.

B.Conscious living leaves you in charge of your life.

C.You have to try even harder to be perfect every moment.

D.You are forming the habit, usually without much awareness.

E.Gradually, you make choices that reflect your beliefs and attitudes.

F.Habits are hard to change, especially if you try to change all of them.

G.If you learn to be conscious, you can practice what you want to be good at.

23、My 12-year-old son and I ride bikes to and from his school every day. I accompany him on the 20-minute ride through Manhattan, drop him off and pick him up. We always ride together; sometimes he leads; sometimes I do. And as we ride, we communicate the ways to reduce the dangers: Don’t go too fast, and watch out for doors suddenly swinging out from parked cars and jaywalking pedestrians, etc. I’m not sure there is a better way to let my son know how to deal with traffic dangers.

But recently he requested me to start hanging back a half block or so. This way he could enjoy the feeling of riding on his own, with the security of knowing that I was nearby in case he needed me. This is healthy, of course, as my son needs space to develop independence in preparation for his inevitable leaving from home. However, that means soon he will want to ride to school on his own, and I will no longer have this wonderful routine. “Let your children go if you want to keep them.” It’s one of the most troubling experiences of parenthood-recognizing that your presence is becoming less welcome.

My dilemma (困境) as a husband mirrors the concern I feel as a parent. My wife has just left on a six-month work in Libyan, where there is a war ongoing. In the days of her leaving, we spoke openly about the possibility, however unlikely, that she might be killed. But I have no choice but to let her make her decision. After all, it was her decision. I know that letting go is a wise path in this case too.

As we travel through life’s stages, we must let goof so much. And I don’t think it gets easier with practice. But maybe just accepting that eventually we will have to let go is the secret to living a full life.

【1】The writer keeps his son company on his daily ride to school to _________.

A.build up his strength

B.teach his son to ride in traffic

C.tell his son the way to school

D.communicate more with his son

【2】The underlined word “inevitable” in the second paragraph can be replaced by _________.

A.unavoidable

B.reasonable

C.terrible

D.reliable

【3】Why does the author feel concerned about his wife’s leaving?

A.Because he would lose a helper in taking care of his son.

B.Because he is too selfish to let her go.

C.Because he is afraid that she would be in danger abroad.

D.Because he thinks she make a unwise decision.

【4】What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Letting go is necessary in life.

B.How to live a full life.

C.Father love is great.

D.Practice makes perfect.

24、阅读理解。

It’s the worst event in human being’s nautical(航海的)history , six times more deadly than the Titanic . When the German cruise ship Wilhelm Gustloff was hit by torpedoes(鱼雷)fired from a Russian submarine in the final winter of World War II , more than 10,000 people mostly women , children and old people fleeing the final Red Army push into Nazi Germany were packed aboard .

An ice storm had turned the decks into frozen sheets that sent hundreds of families sliding into the sea as the ship tilted and began to go down . Others desperately tried to put lifeboats down . Some who succeeded fought off those in the water who had the strength to try to claw their way aboard . Most people froze immediately . I’ll never forget the screams , says Christa Ntitzmann , 87 , one of the 1,200 survivors . She recalls watching the ship , brightly lit , slipping into its dark grave-and into seeming nothingness , rarely mentioned for more than half a century .

Now Germany’s Nobel Prize-winning author Gtinter Grass has revived the memory of the 9,000 dead , including more than 4,000 children-with his latest novel Crab Walk , published last month . The book ,which will be out in English next year , doesn’t dwell on the sinking : its heroine is a pregnant young woman who survives the catastrophe only to say later : Nobody wanted to hear about it , not here in the West ( of Germany ) and not at all in the East .

The reason was obvious . As Grass put in a recent interview with the weekly Die Woche : Because the crimes we Germans are responsible for were and are so dominant , we didn’t have the energy left to tell of our own sufferings . The long silence about the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff was probably unavoidable and necessary .

By unreservedly owning up to their country’s monstrous crimes in the Second World War , Germans have managed to win acceptance abroad , marginalize the neo-Nazis at home and make peace with their neighbors .

Today’s unified Germany is more prosperous and stable than at any time in its long , troubled history . For that , a half century of willful forgetting about painful memories like the German Titanic was perhaps a reasonable price to pay . But even the most politically correct Germans believe that they’ve now earned the right to discuss the full historical record . Not to equate German suffering with that of its victims , but simply to acknowledge a terrible tragedy .

【1】Why does the author say the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff was the worst event in nautical history ?

A. It was attacked by Russian torpedoes .

B. Most of its passengers were frozen to death .

C. Its victims were mostly women and children .

D. It caused the largest number of casualties .

【2】How does Gunter Grass revive the memory of the Wilhelm Gustloff tragedy ?

A. By presenting the horrible scene of the torpedo attack .

B. By describing the ship’s sinking in great detail .

C. By giving an interview to the weekly Die Woche .

D. By illustrating the survival of a young pregnant woman .

【3】What’s the meaning of the underlined word marginalize

A. highlight B. weaken

C. strengthen    D. fasten

The measure of helping was whether the individual who found the envelope actually mailed it or not. Results showed that people were more likely to ________ the application if the person in the photo was physically attractive.

The degree of ________ between the potential helper and the person in need is also important. 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

When Ruth was sixty-eight years old, she visited her daughter Judy and teenage granddaughter Marcy in California. They headed for their cabin, moving forty miles up and down the mountains in their car, along a narrow one-lane road that wound terrifyingly close to cliffs (悬崖).

After dinner, Marcy announced the water tank was low and that she would drive the car down to the pump and get water. Ruth was nervous about her young granddaughter driving down the narrow road by herself, but Judy reminded her that Marcy had been driving vehicles up there roads for many years

“Just be careful, Marcy”, her mother warned. “They’ve had a drought up here and the road along the cliff is pretty shaky. Be sure to hug the mountain side.”

Ruth and Judy watched Marcy from the big window where they could see the road winding down the mountainside. Fifteen minutes later, Judy was still watching when suddenly she screamed,”Oh no! She went over the cliff, Momma! The car and Marcy--they went over! We have to help her!Come on!”

Judy took off running desperately. Grabbing a three-foot-long walking stick against the cabin door, Ruth ran behind her, but Judy was quickly out of sight after the first turn in the road. Breathing hard, Ruth ran on and on, trying to catch up with her daughter. It was getting harder and harder to see anything at dusk.

Suddenly she stopped, not knowing where she was.”Marcy!Judy!”she shouted.

A faint voice .”Momma!”It was Judy.

Ruth screamed into the darkness “Judy, where are you?” Off to her right and down the cliff she heard, “Down here,Mother!Don’t come near the edge! I slipped on loose rocks and fell over. I’m down about ten feet.”

“Oh dear! Judy, what can I do?”

“Just stay back, Momma!”

Facing the situation, Ruth felt her heart was pounding, and chest pains almost took her breath away. She started to sob, totally at a loss what to do.
