23、Today’s amazing newspaper headline: First family of four to walk to the South Pole wearing Mickey Mouse ears and clown’s shoes.

No, not really. It isn’t true. I invented it. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see it one day soon. In the last decade, I’ve seen headlines saying: “The youngest Briton to climb Qomolangma,” “The first person to cross the Pacific Ocean on a windsurfing board” and “The first people to fly around the world in a hot-air balloon”, Why do they do it? And why should I be interested anyway?

Human beings have already climbed the highest mountains, sailed across the oceans and flown around the world. People have already reached the most remote parts of our planet. There just isn’t anything left to explore nowadays. So, those who feel the need for adventure can only do things that haven’t been done before.

What is so great about climbing Qomolangma these days anyway? People pay thousands of dollars to be taken up the mountain by the local Sherpas, who lead the way and carry the bags. At any one time there are about a thousand people either climbing up or on their way back down. As a result, Qomolangma is covered with rubbish and the Sherpas have to make special trips up the mountain to pick it up. The climbers are often inexperienced and when they get into trouble other people have to risk their lives to bring them down to safety. Helicopter crews have been killed trying to reach people stuck on the mountain.

A British man became the first person to walk alone from Canada to the geographic North Pole. The problem was that he went in the spring, when the ice begins to melt and break up. So he got stuck on an isolated piece of ice and a plane had to be sent in to rescue him. It’s very difficult to land a plane on breaking ice and the people who risked their lives to do it weren’t very happy.

What do you think? Are these explorers heroes or a danger to other people? Examples of courage and determination which should inspire the rest of us? Or a waste of time, energy and money?

【1】Which of the following might the author agree with?

A.A newspaper headline should be amazing.

B.Doing what others haven’t done is meaningful.

C.A number of people is eager to travel around the world.

D.Some adventurous activities can cause trouble to others.

【2】Why does the author mention a British man in the fifth paragraph?

A.To prove people don’t like to help others.

B.To show the negative effects his behavior had.

C.To tell us the time he traveled to the North Pole.

D.To illustrate the difficulty a plane had landing on ice.

【3】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.The author wants to know readers’ thoughts.

B.The author doesn’t know which activity to choose.

C.The author is opposed to these so-called explorations.

D.The author sets examples of courage and determination for us.

【4】What might be the best title of the text?

A.To Be the First a Success or a Failure

B.Record Breakers: Heroes of Our Time

C.An Amazing Headline: a New Invention

D.Adventures Around the World

24、阅读理解。

Though the facts that too many people on earth and a too rapid increase in the number added each year are not in argument, we always begin the discussion of "population as global issue" with what most persons mean like this. It was quite right to compare demographic growth to "a long, thin powder fuse(导火线)that bums steadily and hesitatingly until it finally reaches the charge and explodes".

To understand the current situation, which is characterized by rapid increases in population, it is necessary to understand the history of population trends. Rapid growth is a comparatively recent phenomenon. Looking back at the 8,000 years of demographic history, we find that populations have been virtually stable or growing very slightly for most of human history. For most of our ancestors, life was hard, often nasty, and very short. There was high fertility(生育)in most places, but this was usually balanced by high mortality. For most of human history, it was seldom the case that one in ten persons would live past forty, while infancy and childhood were especially risky periods. Often, societies were in clear danger of extinction because death rates could exceed their birthrates. Thus, the population problem throughout most of history was how to prevent extinction of the human race.

This pattern is important to notice. Not only does it put the current problems of demographic growth into a historical perspective, but it suggests that the cause of rapid increase in population in recent years is not a sudden

enthusiasm for more children, but an improvement in the conditions that traditionally have caused high mortality.

Demographic history can be divided into two major periods: a time of long, slow growth which extended from about 8000 B.C. till approximately 1650 A.D. In the first period of some 9,600 years, the population increased from some 8 million to 500 million in 1650. Between 1650 and 1975, the population has increased from 500 million to more than 4 billion. And the population reached 6.2 billion throughout the world by the year 2000, One way to appreciate this dramatic difference in such abstract numbers is to reduce the time frame to something that is more manageable. Between 8000 B.C. and 1650, an average of only 50,000 persons was being added annually to the world's population, At present, this number is added every six hours. The increase is about 800000,000 persons annually.

【1】The underlined word "demographic" in Paragraph l means.

A. extinction of human

B. statistics of human population

C. death rate of human

D. development of human population

【2】 Which of the following demographic growth patterns is most similar to the long thin powder fuse?

A. A slow growth for a long time and then a period of rapid, dramatic increase.

B. Too many people on earth and a few rapid increases in the number added each year.

C. A virtually stable or slightly decreasing period and then a sudden explosion of population.

D. A long period when death rates exceed birthrates and then a short period with higher fertility and lower

mortality.

【3】During the first period of demographic history, societies were often in danger of extinction because .

A. only one in ten persons could live past 40.

B. our ancestors had little enthusiasm for more children

C. there was higher mortality than fertility in most places

D. it was too dangerous to have babies due to the poor conditions

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文

A grey car broke down on a gentle slope near the entrance of the grocery store parking lot. A long line of cars moved slowly around it, some honking(按喇叭), shoppers urgently trying to get their errands(差事)done during the December holiday craziness.

I looked around the offending vehicle, craning(伸长)my neck to catch a glimpse of the driver, a slight figure curled up before the steering wheel and wearing a dark green cap pulled tight.

“I think it's a woman." I told Lois, my wife, who sized up the driver and said. "These days, you just can't tell about people. Better to be safe than sorry."

I edged out into traffic. Lois, the more cautious one, was right. Holiday stress could bring out the worst in people. Across the nation, no one, it seemed, could agree on anything. Racial conflicts. Social unease. Crime on the rise. Neighbors acting like strangers. Peace on earth? I didn't see it on the gift list for this year. Not even in our tiny community in Pennsylvania Dutch country.

I was a few miles down the road when a thought stopped me; Was I missing an opportunity by driving past someone so obviously in need?

“I'm going back," I said. "Let's make sure everything's okay." Lois didn't object.

Minutes later I was back the parking lot. The car was still blocking traffic. Now I could clearly see a woman behind the wheel. I motioned for her to roll down her window, but she stared back at me hesitantly. I got it. I'm a big black guy with a beard, in a community where African Americans are definitely a minority. Finally, the woman rolled down the window.

“I ran out of gas and I just spent my last dollar on groceries." she said. I figured out that I had to push her car to the nearest gas station. But then I was hit with the reality of what I was in for. I had a bad knee, possibly facing surgery. No way could I push even a small car alone.

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I saw a big white guy in a car waiting to exit.
