24、① In the past, scientists made a study on if online brain (大脑) games could improve people’s IQ. They asked more than 8,600 people aged 18 to 60 to play online brain games to improve their memory, reasoning and other skills, for at least 10 minutes a day, three times a week. The scientists compared (比较) them with more than 2,700 people who didn’t play any brain games, but spent the same time surfing the Internet. All of them took an “IQ test” before and after the study.
② Scientists found even though those people did the brain training, they didn’t do any better on the test after six weeks than people who just surfed the Internet. “If you’re playing these games like SNAKE (贪吃蛇) because they’re fun, that’s fine.” said Adrian Owen, the study’s leader. “But if you expect these games to improve your IQ, our studies show they don’t work.”
③ They also found that millions of people all over the world played brain games in order to improve memory, reasoning and other thinking skills, though few studies found that the brain games worked. Not many studies showed the skills used in these brain games could transfer (迁移) to the real world.
④ The professor, Kramer, said people would be better to get some exercise. He said physical activities could help make new brain cells (细胞). Doing exercise is far more useful than playing brain games.
⑤ Other experts said brain games might be useful, ▲ . “If you set these games to a very high level (水平) so that you don’t get the answers very often and they really make you upset, then it may be useful.” said Philip.
⑥ If people are enjoying the brain games, they may not get enough challenge (挑战) and might as well be playing a common video game. Philip said, “People should think about learning a new language or sport if they really want to improve their brain power.” “Computer games are not an easy shortcut (捷径). Getting smart is hard work.” he added.

From my father I have learnt a lot. And I’m very thankful to him. I remember when I was a child my father always got up early, quietly putting on his clothes and going off to work. To arrive in time to open his tiny store at 8:30, he needed to leave our apartment at 6:30. After all, he had to take a bus and then the subway. The last journey was a long walk through a neighborhood much of which was full of the smell of rubbish. I learnt: it is very important to work. No excuse.
When I was 12, I would, on some Saturdays, go to my father’s store to help out. After helping set up the outside clothing display, for the rest of the day, I’d watch to make sure no one stole anything. When I noticed someone looking unusual or strange, I would look the person in the eye, smile and say, “May I help you?” Usually that worked, but sometimes, someone would run off with something. The first time, I ran after the thief but my father shouted, “Martin, stop! There’s no need to do that.” It’s true that safety is more important than money.
After 10 years of hard work, he saved up enough money to buy his first car, a cheap one—he wouldn’t buy one until he could afford to pay for it without borrowing money. I learnt: buy only what you can afford. Buying necessary food and clothing won’t make us go in debt. The unnecessary things won’t give us happiness, which comes from achievement only.
【1】The author’s father owned a clothing shop.
【2】The author ran after thieves many times when he was in his father’s store.
【3】The author’s father thinks the safety comes before money.
【4】The author’s father had worked hard for 10 years before he could afford to buy his first car.
【5】The author likes buying different kinds of things.

How many tests do you have to take at school for a day? How do you usually prepare for them or are you really able to prepare for each of them well? Understanding how your brain works can be very helpful for you.
Our memory is in fact made up of three parts—sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory. Sensory memory takes in information from our five senses and stays for only a few seconds. Short-term memory is where we store the new information that we have just taken in. However, the information also won’t stay there very long if we don’t keep doing something to that information. In other words, we turn it into long-term memory, which includes everything from all our best friends’ birthdays to our favourite poems. When studying, either for tests or other purposes, you are trying to turn the information from the books into long-term memory.
Remember that our brain works better when we are interested in a subject, already have basic knowledge about it, and know that we are going to need it for future use. So helpful methods include speaking out the ideas loud in your own words or draw a picture of the information. Also, remember that our brain can deal with limited information at one time, so filling your brain with materials for several tests in one night isn’t a good idea.
