25、   Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there is too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are very good.

Preview—if it is long and hard. Previewing is very useful for getting a general (笼统的) idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and business reports.

Here is how to preview.

Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.

Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.

Previewing does not give you all the information. It keeps you from spending time on things you don’t really want or need to read.

Skim — if it is short and easy. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your everyday paper.

Here is how to skim.

Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.

Pick up only a few key words in each line.

Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same article, but we will get a similar idea of what it is all about.

1How many skills are there in this passage?

A.One. B.Two. C.Three D.Four.

2What does the underlined word “Skim” mean?

A.Reading slowly. B.Reading loudly.

C.Reading quickly. D.Reading carefully.

3According to the passage, we should not __________ when we read sports news in an everyday paper.

A.read the last two paragraphs carefully B.get our eyes to move fast

C.sweep our eyes across each line D.pick up only a few key words in each line

4Which of the following is WRONG?

A.If the article is easy, you can skim.

B.There are many ways to read more in less time.

C.By previewing, you can get all the information of the passage.

D.Everybody skims differently, but we will get a similar idea of what it is about.

5What’s the best title for this passage?

A.How to read fast B.Where to read

C.When to read D.Why we should read

26、A friend advised me not to choose Slovakia though he hadn’t been there. Few guidebooks include the country.

However, I decided to take a trip to Eastern Slovakia. I always search for roads that are less traveled.

On the first day, I stayed in a hotel opposite a great church. Around the corner, there was a lively town center. Coffee shops were serving hot chocolate. The dumplings and snacks in restaurants were as delicious as any in Western Europe.

On the second day, I traveled to Spis Castle(城堡). It’s about an hour’s drive northwest of Kosice. Perhaps you’ve never heard of the name, but this is one of Central Europe’s largest castles. Part of it was built in the 11th century. On the castle, I saw colorful fields, villages with red roofs(屋顶)and green hills. After that, I tried some local food there.

And the best was yet to come. Driving southeast, I arrived in Banska Stiavnica on the last day of my trip. It is a perfectly protected historical town. I went to a concert in a 15th-century church. At the town center, local people were celebrating a traditional festival. There were traditional shows and teaching of making dumplings. It was the most enjoyable moment of my trip.

Old towns, natural beauty, great castles and food—all at affordable prices and with no tourist crowds. Maybe it’s time to rewrite the guidebooks.

【1】What can we know about Slovakia from the first paragraph?

A.It’s easy to be found in guidebooks.

B.It isn’t very popular with tourists.

C.It’s the favourite place of the writer’s friend.

D.It isn’t included in the world map.

【2】What did the writer do on the first two days?

A.He tried some local food.

B.He saw some castles with red roofs.

C.He stayed in the same hotel.

D.He visited the largest European castle.

【3】What may the writer say to his friend after his trip to Slovakia?

A.“Seeing is believing. You should go there with me.”

B.“Think twice before acting. You’d better not go there.”

C.“A man is never too old to learn. You should read more books.”

D.“Actions speak louder than words. You need write a guidebook yourself.”
