四、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

24、Many of us love stories of time travel, aliens, and the future. But Chinese sci-fi has not seen much attention until now. One work from a Chinese writer made it a hit around the world.

On Aug 23, Liu Cixin, 52, won the world’s top sci-fi prize. He’s the first Asian to ever win the Hugo Award. Liu received the award for Best Novel through his book The Three-body Problem (《三体》).

Liu’s winning work takes the reader back to China in the 1970s. In the book, scientists found a planet with three suns. The aliens on the planet created their own civilization (文明) called “three-body”. The aliens planned to invade (入侵) Earth, but humans on Earth started to form camps to protect themselves from danger.

Liu uses his professional background in computer engineering to write the book. His work is seen as “hard science fiction”, which aims for scientific accuracy (准确). Some say this is why Liu’s novels stand out among other similar Chinese books.

The Chinese culture in Liu’s work also makes his book special. For example, Liu’s work talks about filial piety (孝顺). This is a theme Western sci-fi doesn’t pay much attention to.

Most importantly, Liu’s work, like many successful works of science fiction, is popular with people who are unsure of the future. According to Liu, China is growing quickly and is full of temptations (诱惑). This makes it the perfect time for sci-fi.

“People nowadays are locked (困住) in this small box of reality, but science fiction is a way to broaden our minds”, said Liu.

1According to the article, which of the following is NOT true?

A. Liu Cixin is the first Asian to win the world’s top sci-fi prize.

B. The Hugo Award is an award for science fiction.

C. Liu Cixin wrote The Three-body Problem with his friend.

D. The Three-body Problem is a story set in the past.

2In The Three-body Problem, _____.

A. there was one sun in the system   B. humans and the aliens were friends

C. the aliens wanted to invade Earth   D. humans gave up fighting against enemies

3What makes The Three-body Problem different from Western sci-fi?

A. It is based on scientific accuracy.

B. Readers can find Chinese culture in the book.

C. It includes some uncertain parts about the future.

D. It can broaden people’s minds.

4According to the passage, Liu’s work is popular with people____________.

A. who work in computer engineering   B. who are interested in aliens

C. who love Chinese culture   D. who are unsure of the future

5Why is The Three-body Problem successful? Reasons are as follows EXCEPT__________.

A. he uses his professional background in computer engineering to write the book

B. his work aims for scientific accuracy

C. it is similar to other Chinese books

D. he talks about Chinese culture in the book

Dear mom and dad,

Hello from Hawaii! It is lovely here. The volcanoes(火山)and beaches are beautiful. I hope you can come and see them yourselves someday. The seafood here is amazing-it’s much cheaper than it is in Boston. The people here are friendly too. They taught me to dance and cook.

I have enjoyed my island holiday a lot since I arrived last Wednesday, but I wish I had a different roommate.

My roommate Max is from Sydney. He leaves his stuff everywhere. Our room is always a mess(杂乱). He also watches TV late at night. It makes it hard for me to sleep. The good news is that today is Sunday — it’s time to go home.

26、Indonesians (印度尼西亚人) love to celebrate. They believe that celebrating and eating together brings good luck. Let’s enjoy Indonesia-style.

Would you be surprised to find a New Year’s Day in March? Indonesians on the island of Bali are getting ready to ring in Nyepi, their New Year. It falls in March or April on the night of the new moon and is a symbol of a fresh start for the people and the island of Bali. On the eve of Nyepi, families and friends get together in the market. They carry a huge monster which is made of wood and other materials around the village three times. After that, people set it on fire, hoping to drive out evil (邪恶的) spirits.

After Nyepi, a Turun Tanah ceremony begins in honor of a child’s first steps. At the Turun Tanah, parents invite friends and family to a party to introduce the baby. They put different objects such as a bracelet (手镯), pen, mirror or toy computer around their baby. If the baby picks up a pen, he or she may be a writer. A child who picks up a gold bracelet may be rich.

While Turun Tanah celebrates the future of a family, Galungan celebrates its past. Ancestors who have died return “home” during this ten-day celebration. And living relatives do their best to make them happy. Tall bamboo poles line the street. People attend the ceremonies and visit their family and village temples. Actors and dancers give performances that tell stories of good fighting against evil.

A year of festivals has come to an end. Don’t worry next year, Indonesia will be buzzing (发出嗡嗡声) again with celebrations, so welcome to the party!

27、Everyone needs friends. We all like to feel close to someone. It is nice to have a friend to talk, laugh and do many things with. Sure, there are times when we need to be alone. We don’t always want people around. But we would feel lonely if we never had a friend.

No two people are the same. Sometimes friends don’t get along well. That doesn’t mean they no longer like each other. Most of the time, they will go on being friends. Sometimes friends move away. Then we feel very sad. We miss them very much. But we can call them and write to them. Maybe we would never see them again. And we can make new friends. It is surprising to find out how much we like new people when we get to know them. Families sometimes name their children after a close friend. Many places are named after men and women, if they are friendly to people in a town. Some libraries are named in this way. So are some schools. We think of these people when we go to these places.

There is more good news for people, if they have friends. These people live longer than those people who do not have friends. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay well. Or it could be just knowing that someone cares. If someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.

A. what is the feeling of having no friends   B. how to communicate with friends

C. making friends is the need in one’s life   D. we need to be alone in our life

A. A town.   B. A schoolroom.   C. A school.   D. A library.

4Why do people who have friends live longer?

A. They feel happier and healthier.   B. They know more about friendship.

C. They take less care of themselves.   D. They care more about their friends.

5This passage mainly tells us ________.

A. that people are all friends   B. how to name a place

C. how to get to know friends   D. that people need friends
