二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Microplastics(MPS) are tiny bits or threads of plastic, which are often too small to be seen. The current study shows that MPS are constantly coming down in great numbers, even in remote, protected lands.

The scientists didn't set out to study MPS. Dr. Janice Brahney from Utah State University created the experiment to test her equipment, which was meant to track the way helpful chemicals travel to farms through the air. The experiment used buckets (桶)that opened and closed automatically depending on the weather. This allowed the researchers to separate dust that fell during rain storms from dust that was carried in dry air. These "wet" and "dry" buckets were set up at 11 different protected, remote areas in the western US and checked regularly for over a year.

But when Dr. Brahney and her team began to study the dust they had collected, they got a surprise-MPS. By figuring out how much plastic was falling per square meter, the scientists were able to get a good idea of how much plastic was falling in all of the protected areas in the western US every year. The answer was a shocking 907,185 kilograms, which is enough plastic to make over 123 million plastic bottles.

MPS have been found in tap waler, bottled water, and in sea animals that people eat. Now there is growing proof that we are also breathing MPS all the time. Scientists still don't know how eating or breathing MPS will affect people, though many of the chemicals from plastics are known to cause health problems. There are concerns that MPS can get stuck in the lungs, where they may lead to long-term problems.

Dr. Brahney says that for these reasons, it’s important to slop producing and using plastic. She points out that much of the dust the scientists collected was too small to lest. Also, she says that the scientists only studied MPS that fell in protected areas in die western US - about 6% of the US land area.

【1】How did Dr. Brahney and her team find microplastics?

A.By comparison.

B.By chance.

C.By origin.

D.By design.

【2】What wails for scientists to uncover about MPS?

A.How to get MPS' helpful chemicals.

B.How to separate wet and dry MPS.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

22、It was Molly’s job to hand her father his brown paper lunch bag each morning before he headed off to work.

One morning, in addition to his usual lunch bag, Molly handed him a second paper bag. This one was worn and held together with staples(订书钉)

“Why two bags?” her father asked.“The other is something else,” Molly answered.“What’s in it?” “Just some stuff.Take it with you.”

Not wanting to discuss the matter, he put both bags into his briefcase, kissed Molly and rushed off.At midday he opened Molly’s bag and took out the contents: two hair ribbons(丝带), three small stones, a plastic dinosaur, a tiny sea shell, a small doll, and 13 pennies… The busy father smiled, finished eating, and swept the desk clean into the wastebasket, Molly’s stuff included.

That evening, Molly ran up behind him as he read the paper.“Where’s my bag?” “What bag?” “The one I gave you this morning.” “I left it at the office. Why?” “I forgot to put this note in it,” she said.“And, besides, Daddy, the things in the sack are the things I really like I thought you might like to play with them. You didn’t lose the bag, did you, Daddy?” “Oh, no,” he said, lying.“I just forgot to bring it home.I’ll bring it tomorrow.” While Molly hugged her father’s neck, he unfolded the note that read: “I love you, Daddy.” Molly had given him her treasures all that a 7-year-old held dear.

Love in a paper bag, and he missed it not only missed it, but had thrown it in the wastebasket. So back he went to the office.Just ahead of the night janitor(看门人), he picked up the wastebasket. He put the treasures inside and carried it home carefully. The bag didn’t look so good, but the stuff was all there and that’s what counted.

After dinner, he asked Molly to tell him about the stuff in the sack.It took a long time to tell.Everything had a story or a memory.

“Sometimes I think of all the great times in this sweet life,” he thought.

23、   My family loves the Golden Rule. But in all our years of treating others as we want to be treated, I have learned that this famous motto is a failure. That’s especially true in my family’s choice of food.

My family of two parents and three daughters eats together only on birthdays, and even then, only at dinner. The other 1,090 meals of the year are eaten around different schedules. Even though our lives are totally a mess, for the five important meals each year, we eat as a family.

When we were younger, my mother would prepare a delicious feast with the birthday girl (or birthday father) who was the guest of honor that day. Later, as my sisters and I were allowed to use the cookers, we made birthday meals for our parents.

My parents prepare Indian food for our birthdays. They cook special party foods: tiki, samosa and sweets that would make any dentist worried. Being from northern India, they also make southern food that we rarely taste: bland idly, spicy samber and much more. This is the food they love best, and to show love, they make for us what they enjoy. Yet this is not the food my sisters and I would choose.

For our parents’ birthdays, my sisters and I cook European foods: Finnish summer soup, German apple cake, Norwegian flat-bread and so on.

Although my parents appreciate the food, we know this is not the food that they care for. My mother tries to cover her criticisms (批评) in praise, saying, “The soup is deliciousbut it has very little flavor (味道).” My father refuses to eat pie, wondering what makes Europeans eat cooked fruit and raw vegetables.

Despite different desires and tastes, we put the least bitter flavor into everything we cook according to the rule of treating others as we want to be treated.

1When does the family eat together?

A.When they spend holidays. B.When they celebrate festivals.

C.When they celebrate everyone’s birthdays. D.When they celebrate the parents’ birthdays.

2What would the author’s parents make for the kids’ birthdays?

A.Something the Europeans would eat.

B.Something the parents would like to eat.

C.Something the kids really wanted to enjoy.

D.Something that is only eaten in northern India.

3What would the mother do after eating what the kids made?

A.She would refuse to eat what was not delicious.

B.She would tell her daughters what she loved directly.

C.She would bring forward her opinions in a polite way.

D.She would suggest raw vegetables instead of cooked fruit.

4What does the author want to tell us in the text?

A.Being good at cooking is necessary.

B.Everyone has his own desire and taste.

C.Kids should be grateful to their parents.

D.Treat others according to their true preference.

24、   Super Earths are super cool, and you should really know about them. In short, they are planets slightly bigger than the Earth. And the cool part? They might be a home for life, and they're much easier to study than regular Earths.

It's kind of amazing to realize that in the past couple decades we have confirmed detections of over 4,000 exoplanets (系外行星),or planets orbiting other stars. As soon as astronomers started finding exoplanets, they realized what a wonderful zoo we live in. Planets orbiting dead remains of stars. Planets bigger than Jupiter. Purple planets. Super Earths orbiting within the Habitable Zones of their parent stars - the place where liquid water can potentially exist and where life like our own has the best shot of surviving.

Here's the thing. Astronomers are searching for Earth 2.0, a copy of our own system somewhere out there in the universe. We haven't found one yet, but we have found a bunch of Super Earths. So, if we want to play the “look for life” game, we've got to play with the hand that we've been dealt.

Here's how we play that game. Astronomers detect distant exoplanets through something called the transit method. When a planet's orbit just so happens to line up just right, it will periodically cross the face of its parent star from our point of view.

When the exoplanet crosses in front of the star, the light from that star dims(变暗淡)just a little bit. By staring at lots and lots of stars, we can look for this telltale dimming and spot an exoplanet. This method is much better at finding bigger planets than smaller ones, because the bigger planets make more dimming. So, we tend to find more Super Earths than normal Earths.

【1】Why might Super Earths be a home for life?.

A.Because they are much easier to study.

B.Because they live in the wonderful zoo.

C.Because they orbit within the Habitable Zones.

D.Because they are slightly bigger than the Earth.

【2】What does the underlined part probably mean in Paragraph 3?

A.We have already found an Earth 2.0.

B.We should make full use of what we have.

C.We have discovered life signs on Super Earths.

D.We should play the game with our own hands.

【3】What can we expect of the “transit method" in the future ?

A.It will help a planet line up with its parent star.

B.It will help exoplanets cross in front of the starts.

C.It will help the parent star become much dimmer.

D.It will help astronomers find more Super Earths.

【4】Whafs the purpose of this text?

A.To introduce an interesting game.

B.To recommend a detecting method.

C.To report the finding of Earth 2.0.

D.To share the knowledge of astronomy.
