二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、What is success? I am not going to try to explain success. I think a precise meaning is impossible! Is it winning a Gold Medal at the Olympic Games or winning Wimbledon, or being awarded a Nobel Prize? What else? I believe personal success could be anything at all- it does not have to involve public recognition. Who is more successful? A millionaire who is unhappy, or an unnoticed person, who has led a simple, quiet, sincere and happy life? The simplest definition of success, I think, is “to set out to do something and to succeed in doing it.

The first step on the road to success starts with belief. Believe you can succeed and you will. Achieving success in whatever endeavor(努力)you choose may be the goal of life; because it gives you freedom from worry. Could that be?

Success means different things to every one of us. Some people believe it is measured in financial term; others believe it is helping others rather than helping themselves. However, most people are motivated to a great extend by public recognition. How many people are really happy? How many people are really doing what they want to with their lives? Incidentally, to imagine makes us different from animals.

Most important of all, I believe success is a matter of personal growth. If every day you are developing or growing just a millimeter, I believe one is successful. Just being a slightly better person each day for me is success. I’ve got a very long way to go them!

Finally, always remember success is a process and is not simply a matter of arriving at a destination. It’s the journey that really matters. Success is what you become in the often very difficult and dangerous journey down the river of life.

1What is personal success according to the author?

A. Winning public recognition

B. Being an unhappy millionaire

C. Something impossible to define simply

D. Succeeding in doing what you want

A. Intelligence   B. Confidence

C. Wealth   D. Kindness

C. How to be successful   D. Success is reaching a destination

22、How do you learn English? Are you trying to improve your speaking? Then aim for fluency and “standard” pronunciation. Do you want to get better at writing? You should practice vocabulary and grammar.

But this way of learning, though necessary, misses one big thing: people from different places may speak English differently. For example, people from the US and the UK speak very differently. If a British friend invited me to eat lunch at his apartment, he might say: “Come over to mine round 1 p.m.” But if I invited him over, I might say: “Be at my place a little after 1 p.m.” “My place” is more commonly used in the US; “mine” is more frequently used in the UK—both are informal ways of saying “my house” or “my apartment”.

Even people in different parts of the US speak very differently. For example, imagine that you are talking to a group of people and want to address them all at once. What pronoun do you use? “You”, you should reply—that’s the correct pronoun whether you’re addressing one person or a group. But using “you” to address many people feels strange in a conversation. The most common choice around the US is to say “you guys”. But working class natives of my hometown, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, say “yinz”. In eastern Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey, some people say “youse”. In the southern US, people say “y’all”.

The point is that there’s a lot more to languages than what’s standard and proper. So take a tour around the US, y’all. Yinz will be glad that youse do it.

【1】What is the passage mainly about?

A.The reason why we need to practice pronunciation.

B.How to understand the native English speakers.

C.How to practice vocabulary and grammar effectively.

D.The different ways native speakers use the language.

【2】What is the informal way of saying “my house” in the UK?

A.My place.

B.Mine.

C.My apartment.

D.My flat.

【3】The underlined word “address” in Paragraph 3 probably means ______.

A.write to

B.come to

C.speak to

D.turn to

【4】How many examples does the author use?

A.2.

B.3.

C.4.

D.5.

【5】If someone says, “It’s good seein’y’all.”, he is likely from ______.

A.the southern US

B.Pennsylvania

C.New York

D.New Jersey

23、Earnest Hemingway’s story “The Capital of the world” is about a father and his teenager son, Paco. The son wants to become a matador to escape his father’s control so he runs away to the capital, Madrid. 【1】 Only a simple message is published—‘Dear Paco, meet me in front of the Madrid newspaper office tomorrow at noon. All is forgiven. I love you.’ Hemingway continues, “The next day at noon in front of the newspaper office there were 800 ‘Pacos’ all seeking forgiveness.”

Hemingway’s story captures the human need to be forgiven. While there is no guarantee that those we hurt will forgive us, we should still try.【2】

【3】 This will only make things worse. Instead, we should express our deepest regret for the pain we cause—sometimes that acknowledgement is all that’s needed. 【4】 But we can find peace knowing that we did the right thing in asking forgiveness even though the outcome wasn’t what we hoped and wanted.

【5】It is very hard at first and needs a long period of time. When we forgive others, it doesn’t mean that we forget what they have done. What it does mean is that we are no longer emotionally and spiritually disturbed by their actions. Life is too short; we must learn to forgive.

A.How to forgive someone who has hurt us?

B.Forgiveness can be hard to acquire, but it’s not impossible.

C.How do you feel when your life is full of hatred and regret?

D.The son finds it hard for his father to forgive his misbehavior.

E.One key thing in seeking forgiveness is to not make excuses for our actions.

F.If the person can’t forgive us, we must accept it as a consequence of our actions

G.The father, eager to find his son, follows him and puts an ad. in the newspaper.

24、Imagine a school that expected its students to become literate without any formal instruction. Most parents would be alarmed by such an approach, which would leave their children confused and with gaps in their understanding. This, however, has been the philosophy on character development in many of our schools. Why is the development of character seen as somehow different from the other skills that we teach?

Of course there will always be learning by osmosis (耳濡目染) in any school, but as a teacher and primary school head I have found that a child’s moral literacy is strengthened when they acquire the building blocks of good character such as consideration, courage and honor: qualities which are commonly known as virtues.

I personally find that exploring a virtue over a two-week period provides a simple and effective program that allows for the creative input of both teacher and student and a chance for the virtue to embed (使融入) itself. Once a lesson on a virtue such as honesty has been completed we need to allow time for children to practice this concept just as would be the case with fractions or verbs. Allowing children to role play a situation such as making up excuses to cover a mistake can be enormously interesting, and the drama can be frozen allowing the characters to be questioned about their feelings and motives. It’s also a safe way for children to experience for themselves how a lie usually goes out of control.

Our role as educators is also to look for opportunities to help our students as they attempt to strengthen their characters. When something goes wrong we guide the young person to the virtue that will prevent it from happening again. For instance, when a student thoughtlessly disturbs the calm atmosphere of the library, instead of a response such as, “that was really disrespectful and selfish of you!” we draw out from them the required virtue: “When you’re walking through the library, what virtues do you need to use?”

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018.

He was hiking behind his ranch (牧场) in Patagonia, Arizona, a town near the US-Mexico border, when he found a balloon on the grass. Heiss walked towards it with his dog, thinking he would pick up something useless and throw it away.

That’s when he noticed the balloon was connected to a piece of paper. ‘Dayami’, it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Turning the paper over, he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. “My Spanish isn’t very good, but I could see it was a Christmas,” he said.

Heiss was attracted. He thought that maybe a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the kid who had sent this one.

It would be difficult, but he believed he could work it out. About 32 kilometers to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico. “Based on the prevailing wind (盛行风), I was pretty sure that’s where it came from,” he said.

Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is good at Spanish and helped him translate the list. The elderly couple figured out that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes and some art supplies.

Heiss then posted on social media along with some photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no useful information provided; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a message to Radio XENY, a radio station based in Nogales.

注意:

1.续写词数应为150左右;

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
