二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、You can tell a lot about people’s general state of mind based on their social media feeds. Are they always tweeting (发微博)about their biggest annoyances or posting pictures of particularly cute kitties? In a similar fashion, researchers are turning to Twitter for clues about the overall happiness of entire geographic communities.

What they’re finding is that regional variation in the use of common phrases produces predictions that don’t always reflect the local state of well being. But removing from their analyses just three specific terms -- good, love and LOL - greatly improves the accuracy of the methods.

“We’re living in a crazy COVID-19 era. And now more than ever, we’re using social media to adapt to a new normal and reach out to the friends and family that we can’t meet face-to-face.” Kokil Jaidka studies computational linguistics at the National University of Singapore. “But our words aren’t useful just to understand what we, as individuals, think and feel. They’re also useful clues about the community we live in.”

One of the simpler methods that many scientists use to analyze the data involves correlating words with positive or negative emotions. But when those records are compared with phone surveys that assess regional well-being, Jaidka says, they don’t paint an accurate picture of the local zeitgeist(时代精神).

Being able to get an accurate read on the mood of the population is no laughing matter. “That’s particularly important now, in the time of COVID, where we’re expecting a mental health crisis and we’re already seeing in survey data the largest decrease in subjective well-being in 10 years at least, if not ever.”

To find out why, Jaidka and her team analyzed billions of tweets from around the United States. And they found that among the most frequently used terms on Twitter are LOL, love and good. And they actually throw the analysis off. Why the disconnect?

“Internet language is really a different beast than regular spoken language. Weve adapted words from the English vocabulary to mean different things in different situations. ” says Jaidka. “Take, for example, LOL. Ive tweeted the word LOL to express irony, annoyance and sometimes just pure surprise. When the methods for measuring LOL as a marker of happiness were created in the 1990s, it still meant laughing out loud.”

“There are plenty of terms that are less misleading,” says Jaidka. “Our models tell us that words like excited, fun, great, opportunity, interesting, fantastic and those are better words for measuring subjective well-being. ”

【1】The researchers turn to social media feeds to _________.

A.help with the analysis of people’s subjective well-being

B.locate the most-frequently used words

C.prove the disconnect between language and emotions

D.make the prediction method more effective

【2】How did Jaidka know the analysis wasn’t accurate?

A.It didn’t reflect the mood of the entire geographic community

B.It didn’t match the assessment result of the phone surveys.

C.It didn’t consider the features of Internet language.

D.It didn’t take the regional variations into account.

【3】Which of the following statements will Jaidka most probably agree with?

A.Face-to-face communication is needed to ensure happiness.

B.Internet use is to blame for the decrease in subjective well-being.

C.Internet language should be abandoned as a source of scientific analysis.

D.Less misleading words should be used in assessing subjective well-being.

22、It's hard to turn down hamburgers, french fries, potato chips and all of the other junk food that seem to call out to us. However, eating too much junk food can harm your body, particularly if you're between the ages of 10 and 19.

"Junk food shapes adolescent brains in ways that harm their ability to think, learn and remember. It can also make it harder to control impulsive(冲动的)behaviors, "said Amy Reichelt, a brain specialist at Western University, Canada. "It may even up a teen's risk of depression and anxiety. "

Reichelt and two other researchers reviewed more than 100 studies, including their own, about how poor food choices can impact adolescent brains. They found adolescents are more sensitive than any other age group to processed foods with a lot of fat and sugar as their brains are not yet fully formed. Adolescent brains are still developing the ability to assess risks and control actions. The prefrontal cortex(前额皮质)is the part of the brain that tells us we shouldn't eat chips all the time and helps us resist that urge. However, this region is the last to mature—it doesn't fully develop until we are in our early 20s.

In fact, these regions are even more sensitive when we are young. That's because dopamine, a natural chemical that lifts our mood when we experience something good, is especially active in adolescent brains. Therefore, the teen brain has two strikes against it when it comes to resisting junk food. "It has a heightened drive for rewards and reduced self-regulation, "said Reichelt.

Reichelt and her team conducted their own study using mice, whose brains develop much like our own. They discovered that the"teenage" mice that had a high-fat diet performed worse on memory tests than those eating a normal diet. Researchers said the high-fat diet may make the mice's prefrontal cortex work less effectively.

So, what's the best way to say no to junk food? Researchers suggest exercise. When we exercise, the brain's reward system becomes less sensitive to food cues. Exercise also makes the body to create a protein that helps brain cells grow and boosts connections between the prefrontal cortex and other brain regions. The prefrontal cortex thus can work better to help us make wise decisions and control our impulses.

【1】What's the Amy Reichelt's opinion on junk food?

A.Junk food is harmless for adult.

B.Junk food affects both teens' body and brain.

C.Junk food is more attractive to adults than teens.

D.Junk food has nutrients and does good to teens.

【2】Why do adolescents more like junk food than adults in Reichelt's view?

A.Because their brains are not yet fully formed.

B.Because junk food contains a lot of fat and sugar.

C.Because they know junk food is more nutritious.

D.Because it is popular among young people.

【3】What conclusion did Reichelt draw from the experiment on the mice?

A.High-fat diet makes prefrontal cortex of mice more excited.

B.The "teenage" mice are fatter than "adult" mice.

C.Junk food may make the "teenage" mice more active.

D.Junk food is harmful for memory.

【4】What should adolescents do to refuse junk food according to the passage?

A.To work out regularly.

B.To eat food containing no fat.

C.To keep away from food made of potatoes.

D.To eat more fruit and vegetables.

23、It was supposed to be a normal trip to the supermarket. My son was little, and it was getting close to nap time, so I was rushing. But when I went to start the car, I realized that I must have locked my keys in the trunk with my bag.

So I took my son and went back inside the store. I had to use their phone to call my husband for the spare key. After many calls and messages with no answer. I was getting upset. My son was tired and getting fussy. I was exhausted from a sleepless night that all moms go through when their kids are teething. When he went into full-on crying, I felt tears come down my face, too.

An employee at the store tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to come with her. I was fearful for a moment, thinking I was going to be scolded and thrown into the storage area to keep us quiet. The employee, whose name was Kelly, took me, to my surprise, to the Starbucks cafe inside the store. She bought me a coffee and settled down with us. As we talked, my son settled into a sound sleep. After about fifteen minutes, she said her break was over and if I couldn’t contact my husband, they would get the trunk open.

After I got home that day, I kept thinking about what Kelly had done for me and wanted to do something. So, Kelly from the Safeway in Delaware, these are the things that you have done because I was thinking of your kindness as I did them: bolding doors for people, letting someone ahead of me in line, hitting “yes” on the donation button at the checkout, and many others.

I am so glad I locked my keys in the car that day. Who would have thought a cup of coffee could have so much of an effect on a person?

【1】What does the underlined word “fussy” mean in paragraph 2?

A.Hard to please.

B.Frightened to death.

C.To tell her a story.

D.To keep her quiet.

【3】What does the author want to show by listing what she did in paragraph 4?

A.She led a very busy life.

B.She was indeed a kind woman.

C.Kelly made her a better person.

D.Kelly took pride in her kindness.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

A.A Cup of Coffee

B.A Story of Lost Keys

C.A Forgetful Mother

D.A Responsible Employee

24、Benefits of Sports

Taking exercise is a physical, mental and social adventure. It’s a great way for children to take a break from study and release extra energy. It also helps them lead fuller and happier lives as regular sports have proven to improve general well-being.

【1】 Regardless of your fitness level when you start playing sports, you’ll notice an increase in your overall fitness once you take part. Nearly every sport requires physical activity and the skills needed to be competitive. Basketball players focus on strength training. 【2】 The training process helps encourage physical fitness and performances in competitions.

【3】 Playing sports contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self-worth. A pat on the back, high-five from a teammate, or handshake after a match really raises a child’s confidence. Words of praise and encouragement from the coach, parents and other players raise the self-worth. 【4】 So after a game, it’s a better idea to ask “Did you enjoy the game?” rather than “Did you win?”

Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up leadership and responsibility. 【5】 Teamwork demands both being dependable as a teammate and learning to rely on your teammates to achieve a positive outcome. Teamwork will raise your responsibility and give you an opportunity to be a leader.

There is no shortage of reasons to find a sport to take part in. Are you ready to go? Pick one and get moving!

A.It’s not just your body that benefits from sports.

B.Therefore, playing sports is going to make you more fit.

C.Football players work on speed while track athletes train through longer runs.

D.Among these, learning how to work as a team is the most important advantage.

E.But remember, a child’s self-worth should not be judged by victory or loss.

F.If you play group sports, you’ll be part of a team that takes direction from a coach.

G.The physical benefits of doing sports are probably the most obvious.
