二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Have you ever taken a selfie (自拍照) and thought, “Why do I look so weird (奇怪的)?” The reason may be because photos show us the reverse (相反) of what we see in the mirror. When we take a photo of ourselves using the front-facing camera on a phone, the resulting image captures our face as others see it. This can be a little weird because our faces are not perfectly symmetrical, and certain features don’t line up in photos the same way they do in the mirror.

In addition to the reverse image issue, our tendency to like what we’re familiar with also plays a role. We are most familiar with our faces as we see them in the mirror, so we come to prefer that mirror image. According to the mere exposure theory, repeatedly encountering something makes us like it more. When we look at ourselves in the mirror, we tend to focus on what we consider our good side, or the angle that seems most attractive to us.

“You have that familiarity, which breeds liking. You’ve established a preference for that look of your face,” said Pamela Rutledge, director of the Media Psychology Research Center.

New York-based photographer Michael Levy expanded on Rutledge’s point. He noted that when we look at ourselves in the mirror, we tend to focus on what we consider our good side — that is, the angle that seems most attractive to us.

Furthermore, when we see our faces in the mirror, we are looking at ourselves in motion, as opposed to completely still in a photo. We tend to notice a lot more details in a still photo, and different camera lenses and a person’s distance to the camera can also change the way people look in photos.

But ultimately, the way we appear in photos is the way we look to the rest of the world, and studies have shown that other people generally like the version of us they see, as opposed to the image we see of ourselves. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. So go forth and selfie.

【1】Why do people sometimes appear “weird” in selfies, according to the article?

A.Because selfies are often taken in bad lighting.

B.Because they are not standing at the correct angle.

C.Because selfies show a reversed image of the face.

D.Because people tend to overthink their appearance in selfies.

【2】According to the article, what is the mere exposure theory?

A.A theory about how people like what they see in the mirror.

B.A theory about how people prefer certain angles in photographs.

C.A theory about how people tend to focus on details in still photographs.

D.A theory about how repeated exposure to something makes people like it more.

【3】What is the purpose of the text?

A.To provide tips for better selfies.

B.To Promoting self-acceptance in photos.

C.To explain differences in appearance between photos and mirrors.

D.To explore factors behind preference for mirror images over photo images.

【4】How does the author support his explanations for the phenomenon of why we look different in selfies and mirrors?

A.By providing statistical data and graphs.

B.By comparing selfies and mirror images.

C.By using questions and persuasive language.

D.By citing scientific studies and experts’ opinions.

22、Why do people feel so rushed? Part of this is a perception (认知) problem. Generally, people in rich countries have more free time than they used to. This is particularly true in Europe, but even in America free time has been inching up. Women's paid work has risen a lot over this period, but their time in unpaid work, like cooking and cleaning, has fallen even more significantly, thanks in part to dishwashers, washing machines and microwaves, and also to the fact that men shift themselves a little more around the house than they used to.

The problem, then, is less how much time people have than how they see it. Ever since a clock was first used at a workplace to record labor hours in the 18th century, time has been understood in relation to money. Once hours are financially quantified (量化), people worry more about wasting, but tend to save or use them more profitably. When economies grow and incomes rise, everyone's time becomes more valuable. And the more valuable something becomes, the rarer it seems.

Once seeing their time in terms of money, people often grow stingy with the former to maximize the latter. Workers who are paid by the hour volunteer less of their time and tend to feel more upset when they are not working.

The relationship between time, money and anxiety is something Gary Becker noticed in America's post-war boom years. "If anything, time is used more carefully today than a century ago," he noted in 1965. He found that when people are paid more to work, they tend to work longer hours, because working becomes a more profitable use of time. So the rising value of work time puts pressure on all time. Leisure time starts to seem more stressful, as people are forced to use it wisely or not at all.

【1】 Women's time in unpaid work has fallen partly because ______.

A. men's ability to support a family has been improved

B. men's involvement in housework has increased

C. women's leisure time was taken up by heavy housework

D. women become more skilled at household equipment

【2】 From the second paragraph, we learn that ______.

A. labor hours were recorded with a clock

B. people haven't realized the value of time

C. more work hours bring in more money

D. The rise of incomes makes time less valuable

【3】The underlined phrase grow stingy with can probably be replaced by "______".

A. refuses to delay B. intend to kill

C. try to accumulate   D. hesitate to spend

【4】According to Gary Becker, what causes people feel anxious about time?

A. The wrong way of time being spent.

B. People's willingness to work hard.

C. The increasing value of work time.

D. More and more leisure time.

24、The Iranian-American Maz Jobrani knew early in life that he wanted to become an actor or a comedian. Jobrani came to California with his parents from Iran when he was six and attended school there. His introduction to acting was an experience of trying out for a school play. “When I was 12, I tried out for the school play and fell in love with the stage...” said Jobrani, “I have friends who were funnier than I was!”

Jobrani tried an ordinary career path, studying political science in college and even starting a Ph.D. Program at UCLA. But the comedy of Eddie Murphy was a more powerful influence. “I’m a comedian because I’m a fan of comedy. I love watching comedy and I believe I discovered Eddie Murphy probably by watching “Saturday Night Live” and just then I wanted to be like Eddie Murphy,” Jobrani said.

Now as a full-time comedian, Maz Jobrani uses comedy to bridge the cultural divide. His performances both laugh at extremism and challenge American bias(偏见)of Muslims. And his recent movie does the same. He co-wrote and started in “Jimmy Vestvood: American Hero.”

“The movie is about a man who loves America, who wins the green card coming to America from Iran. He wants to be a policeman. But once he comes to America, he realizes America doesn’t accept immigrants(移民)the way he thought they would and the only job he can find is working as a security guard(保安)and from there he has to go on to save the world.”

This comedy has a message of showing Iranians in a very different light, a fun light that most Americans aren’t used to seeing,” he said. For example, he feared when he first heard the phrase “axis of evil,” which is used to describe such countries as Iran. But he soon realized it could also make a great name for a series of shows. So, in 2005, the “Axis of Evil Comedy” Tour came. The shows featured Jobrani and three other comedians of Middle Eastern descent(血统).The group first appeared on the American television channel Comedy Central.

It’s a good feeling when you realize it’s working. It’s the worst when you’re doing stand-up (单人说笑表演的)comedy and the audience doesn’t relate to you. But their laugh is like a drug keeping feeding you. It’s kind of like I were surfing. So whether it’s doing stand-up comedy or putting on a movie, your goal as a comedian is to make people laugh.

1By introducing his comedian career, Jobrani tends to tell us that ________.

A. he is actually a born comedian

B. Americans’ lifestyle makes him a comedian

C. Eddie Murphy has a great influence on him

D. Murphy’s plays made him first like comedy

2What do you know about Jobrani’s film “American Hero”?

A. It is all about his personal experiences.

B. It is about Iranians who are against Americans.

C. It mainly plays a joke on the US immigrant policy.

D. It makes fun of American bias of Muslims.

3What do you learn about the “Axis of Evil Comedy” Tour?

A. It turns what’s frightening into something funny.

B. It is performed by Jobrani and two Iranians.

C. It blames the US’ unfriendly attitude to Iran.

D. It didn’t work well at the very beginning.

4To comedians, ________.

A. stand-up comedy is difficult to perform.

B. the audience’s laughter is their power.

C. doing stand-up comedy is just like surfing.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

A Brief Introduction of Cryptocurrency

In 2008, someone, or perhaps a group of people, using the name Satoshi Nakamoto published a paper to an online group that discussed cryptography (密码学). That paper described a process that would use cryptography to create a secure electronic cash system, now known as a cryptocurrency (加密货币). Person to person payments could be made online using a shared network of computers instead of a bank or other financial institutions. Each transaction could happen very quickly. The shared network of computers would also serve as the means to verify(核实) those transactions safely. Getting rid of the need for a centralized banking system would open up the possibility for anyone to become part of the digital economy.

The software behind cryptocurrency is open source, which means anyone can use the original code to create their own version. Today, there are well over a thousand different cryptocurrencies. Unfortunately, their becoming the global payment systems are held back by problems affecting the entire cryptocurrency industry. One issue is weak security on cryptocurrency websites where users either store their electronic cash in virtual “wallets” or exchange one kind of electronic cash for another. In recent years, clever thieves have broken into many of these websites and stolen electronic cash. The websites are struggling to protect their users from such thefts.

Another problem is the large number of fake cryptocurrencies that are advertised on the internet. The advertisements invite internet users to visit websites offering new cryptocurrencies. Many visitors are persuaded by the websites to buy their cryptocurrencies using actual money. Later, the websites disappear along with the victims’ money. In response to this problem, companies like Facebook and Google are limiting cryptocurrency advertising on their websites.
