二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、For decades, world wars and fears of a brave new world have made British workers very anxious. Yet it appears that the rise of robots has been overestimated, according to new data. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) published a series of data which showed that far fewer jobs are at risk of replacement by robots than previously thought.

In 2017, out of the 19.9 million jobs analyzed in England, 7. 4 percent of people were employed in jobs at high risk of replacement. This marked a fall of 0.7 percent less than in 2011. However, the number of employees that were in jobs at low risk of replacement in 2017 was 27.7 percent of all employees, a rise of 2.4 percent since 2011.

The ONS found that the three jobs with the highest possibility of replacement are waiters and waitresses, shelf fillers and the most basic sales jobs. As expected, regular things in a fixed order and repeated tasks can be carried out more quickly and efficiently by an algorithm(计算程序) written by a human, or a machine designed for specific functions. Therefore, the risk of replacement in such jobs is to be higher.

However, the three jobs at the lowest risk of replacement are doctors, higher education professionals and senior education professionals. Furthermore, while the general number of jobs has increased, most of these are jobs that are at low or medium (中等的) risk, suggesting that the labour market may be changing to jobs that require more complex skills.

Alessandro, an expert in AI, said he was not surprised by the fall in jobs which were at risk. “When something like technology becomes fashionable, there's a rise in major expectations. Our expectation reaches the highest point, and then it comes back down to a more realistic level,” he added.

【1】What do data in paragraph 2 mainly want to show?

A.Robots are helpful to job market.

B.The future of robots looks bright,

C.Robots have better performance than people.

D.The threat of job replacement by robots isn't as serious as expected.

【2】What's the finding of the ONS in paragraph 3?

A.Regular and repeated tasks are likely to be replaced.

B.The work of service will no longer exist.

C.More people prefer working on computers.

D.Jobs with lower pay will totally be replaced by machines.

【3】What is Alessandro's attitude towards the finding shown in the text?

A.Doubtful.

B.Uncertain.

C.Supportive.

D.Critical.

【4】What is the suitable title for the text?

A.Most Jobs Are Being Replaced by Robot

B.Jobs Replaced by Robots Are Fewer Than Thought

22、   Thunderstorms often show up uninvited to Carnival (狂欢节) in Brazil. This year's attempt to influence the skies took place in Sao Pablo by a party's official sponsor,Skoal, a Brazilian beer brand. "The fun stops when it rains," says Pedro Ada my, Skoal's marketing director. So do beer sales.

An airplane painted with Skoal's logo sprayed (喷洒) water droplets into clouds to make rain fall before the clouds reached the city. According to its YouTube video that has been viewed 12 million times,it is a "mission worthy of science fiction".

Whether it's science or fiction is up for debate. The use of cloud-seeding to increase rainfall dates back to the 1940s. But the United States government stopped funding it in the 1980s due to a lack of " scientific proof of the effectiveness of intentional weather change", according to the National Research Council. A new paper based on experiments in Idaho found that seeding clouds with silver iodide increased snowfall on three occasions, but the authors say that more research is needed to find out if it can reliably promote precipitation (降水). Paulo Artaxo, a Brazilian physicist, says flatly that cloud-seeding is "useless".

Still, governments and firms in many countries use the technology. Sao Pablo's water company has signed million dollar contracts with ModClima to bring rain, most recently during a drought in 2014-15. Although cloud-seeding normally uses a chemical such as silver iodide to provide a surface around which water or ice droplets form, ModClima says it has invented an "experimental" method that uses water alone.

Carnival-goers cheered when the first two days were cloudy but dry. Many shared Skol's video. But at around 5pm on February 24th, the sky darkened and rain poured down. Celebrants at one block party left the Skol stands and rushed to buy umbrellas and plastic rain capes.

【1】Why did Skoal support cloud-seeding?

A.To increase rainfall.

B.To promote its beer sales.

C.To provide evidence for a research.

D.To highlight the theme of the Carnival.

【2】Which is Artaxo's attitude toward cloud-seeding?

A.Objective.

B.Doubtful.

C.Conservative.

D.Negative.

【3】Why was the US government no longer in favor of cloud-seeding?

A.Its outcome couldn't be proved.

B.It worked in limited situations.

C.It needed more field researches.

D.It used an un-ecofriendly chemical.

【4】What is the best title of the text?

A.Could rain ruin fun?

B.How do we change weather?

C.Could we rely on intentional rain?

D.How do we avoid cloud-seeding pollution?

23、School had just started in August when Conner began throwing up for no reason. It wasn’t long before the boy also began suffering terrible headaches. In February a 1.7-inch tumor was found in his brain and Conner was set to begin to receive radiation (放射疗法) treatments. Before treatments start, technicians make a white plastic mask (面罩) to keep patients immovable and protect unaffected parts of the brain while radiation is directed at the tumor.

It’s an unpleasant experience and a frightening time. The doctor Cook decided that the masks could at least be made to look like something fun — maybe Batman or Mickey Mouse. “I started thinking these masks are white and not fun at all for kids,” she told The Greenville News. “I felt like if we could make it a little more fun for them, they might be a little more excited about coming in for the treatment. Because the kids are afraid. While the treatment itself isn’t physically painful, it can cause a lot of anxiety (焦虑). And the treatment is required daily for up to six weeks. “

And the masks really make a difference. “The kids really like them,” Cook said. “It makes what is, let’s face it, a terrible experience, a nice experience because they get to choose something themselves.”

When new children come in for the treatment, Cook finds out what their favorite movies or cartoon characters are. Then she sets about creating the mask by drawing the image she wants onto paper, sticking it with glue, and once it’s dry, she applies the colors using paints. Each child can take the mask home once the treatment ends.

“Coming to the doctor always means fear and pain. I wanted to make it fun,” she said. “The kids really love it. It’s something they enjoy and can relate to. And it fills an interest I have. I get great pleasure from it.”

【1】Why was the plastic mask used according to Paragraph 1?

A.To check the patient’s brain.

B.To reduce the patient’s headache.

C.To prevent the patient from throwing up.

D.To protect the patient’s brain during the treatment.

【2】What can we know about the radiation treatment?

A.It can be received at home.

B.It has to be finished in a month.

C.It may make the patients feel worried.

D.It will cause huge physical pain for patients.

【3】What does Cook do to help the children being treated?

A.Offer them some free masks as gifts.

B.Show them their favorite movies or TV shows.

C.Dress them up as cartoon characters.

D.Make the masks more interesting to kids.

【4】What does the author want to show by telling this story?

24、The scientist from the Lockheed Space Company work in Felton, California, with the help of a computer. But the computer is placed in Sunnyside, about 80 kilometers away. What scientists input (输入) is sent by telephone lines to the computer, and after a time, copies of the designs are needed back in Felton as quickly as possible Lockheed people have tried several ways of sending the prints, but the most effective seems to be by pigeon. Are pigeons really used to carry messages in these days? They are, and they send the prints faster and cheaper than any other way.

Human messengers are much more expensive and slower than the pigeons. The road to Felton goes through the mountains, and the driving is not easy. An electronic printout (电子打印输出) system could do the work in Felton, but at a cost of 10 dollars a print. Pigeons carry the designs for about 1 dollar each.

Now Lockheed people have ten pigeon messengers. The pigeons do the work, and they have made Lockheed more famous. You can often read the news about pigeons in the newspapers around the world.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had a problem. Talent Night was coming up, but I had no talents.

Kate can make anything using origami (折纸). Tommy creates breath-taking beats on overturned plastic buckets. Olivia trains her petty dog to do tricks. And those are just my friends. My grade also boasts four dancers, a gymnast, two bakers, a yoga expert, six singers, and five artists, among others.

Every day my teacher asked if I’d decided what to do. And every day I reminded her that I had no talents.

“Nonsense, Benjamin,” she said. “You’ll think of something.”

“I’ll just have to be sick the day of the show,” I announced to my friends one afternoon. “If you get a cold, be sure to cough on me.”

“You must have a talent,” said Kate. “Let’s make a list. What are you good at?”

“Eating,” I answered. “Watching TV.”

Kate rolled her eyes. “Benjamin, be serious.”

“Tormenting (捉弄) my little brother.”

“Are you kidding me?” Kate looked at our friends. “Come on, guys. What are Benjamin’s talents?”

“He’s good with dogs,” said Olivia. “My dog adores him.”

“Oh, great,” I said. “I can sit on the stage while he licks my face. Benjamin Belinski, Human Dog Toy.”

“Benjamin’s funny and humorous,” said Tommy. He turned to me. “You could do a comedy routine.”

“Yeah. Every joke could be about how I have no talents,” I said.

“Benjamin,” said Kate, “maybe you don’t know how to juggle (变戏法), but your birthday parties are the best.”

“Yeah,” agreed Olivia, “and you always get us together to do stuff. Like having game nights or riding bikes after school—or when we held that yard sale. The week you had the flu we didn’t do anything fun.”

“You’re like the glue that holds us together,” added Tommy.

“Oh, great,” I said. “Benjamin Belinski, Human Glue Gun.”

But their comments got me thinking. Lying in bed that night, I came up with a plan so exciting that it took me two hours to fall asleep.

注意:

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
