二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Parties and social gathering no longer excite us the same way they once did. This is not because of a lack of desire to socialize, but the mobile-phone.

At parties, more people are on their phones than on their drinks. According to a recent International Data Corporation Study, over half of all Americans have a smartphone and reach for it as soon as they wake up, keeping it in hand all day. In addition, too many people in society are using smartphones while driving and as a result, they get into car crashes. 34 percent of teenagers admit sending messages while driving, and they agree that sending messages is their number one driving interruption. People’s addiction(沉溺) to their smartphones is unbelievably becoming more important than the lives of themselves and others.

Just as drivers ignore the importance of focusing while on the road, many people also fail to recognize the importance of human communication. When with their friends, some people aimlessly check or send messages in front of a friend, which sends a message to that friend: the person I am texting is more important than you. In addition, relying on our smartphones to make friends does not give us the same advantage as being able to make new friendships in the real world. Face-to-face conversations will give us much stronger communication skills in the long run.

As many people risk their lives and the lives of people around them just to send a message or mindlessly check their messages, smartphones are in many ways more dangerous to people. The quality of this technology is preventing societal achievements and weakening the value of communication. Not only is the smartphone affecting our desire to communicate face to face, but it is also lowering society’s ability to communicate.

【1】 The purpose of the passage is to   .

A. call for an end to use the smartphone while driving

B. tell us to pay attention to communication skills

C. express a concern about the overuse of the smartphone

D. advise us to be careful about the addiction to face-to-face communication.

【2】The second paragraph is developed by .

A. giving examples B. time order.

C. comparing facts D. analyzing the effects

【3】The author advises us to make new friends   .

A. by using smartphones   B. in a face-to-face way

C. in different ways D. by writing letters.

【4】Over-dependence on the smartphone leads to the fact that   .

A. parties and gathering limit their social circle.

B. people are more and more easy-going.

C. people’s communication skills are weakened.

D. face-to-face communication becomes more and more dangerous.

23、Crew members of China’s Shenzhou XIII mission are scheduled to give a space-based lecture on Thursday afternoon from the orbiting Tiangong space station to students around the world, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

The agency said on Monday that the three astronauts—Major General Zhai Zhigang, Senior Colonel Wang Yaping and Senior Colonel Ye Guangfu—will begin the first lecture of the Tiangong Class, or Heavenly Palace Class, at 3:40 pm Thursday. The lecture will be broadcast live to audiences around the globe. The astronauts will show viewers how they live and work inside the station and then conduct some scientific experiments to show students how gravity works differently in space. They will also answer viewers’ questions at the end of the live-stream event, the agency said.

Groups of students in Beijing, Nanning in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and Wenchuan in Sichuan province, as well as the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, will take part in video communications during the lecture.

The agency said last week that the coming lecture “will mark the launch of the Tiangong Class, China’s first extraterrestrial lecture series to popularize space science”. It added that such lectures will be based on the country’s manned spaceflights and will be presented by Chinese astronauts. Featuring interactive teaching, the activities will be mainly targeted at youngsters.

The three astronauts are scheduled to spend six months working in the station, making it China’s longest manned space mission.

In June 2013, Wang Yaping took part in the Shenzhou X mission that lasted nearly 15 days. 24、   Awe is generally defined as the sense that you are in the presence of something larger and more consequential than yourself. According to a study called “awe walks”, people who took a fresh look at the world around them during brief, weekly walks felt more upbeat and hopeful in general than walkers who did not. Feeling a sense of awe also seems to up our overall feelings of gladness and improve health.

Previous studies have linked increased physical activity to greater happiness and reduced risks for anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses. But no studies had looked into whether mixing awe and activity might increase the benefits of or, on the other hand, reduce them. So, for the new study, scientists concentrated on people in their 60s, 70s and 80s, an age when some people can face risks for declining mental health.

The scientists asked 52 study volunteers to add a weekly 15-minute walk to their normal schedules. All of them were physically healthy and psychologically well-adjusted, with little anxiety or depression. Then they were randomly divided into two groups. One, as a control group, was asked to start walking, preferably outside, but given few other requirements. The other group was not only asked to walk once a week, but also were instructed in how to cultivate awe as they walked. “Basically, we told them to try to go and walk somewhere new, since novelty helps to cultivate awe,” says Virginia Sturm, an associate professor who led the new study.

Both groups were asked to take a few selfies (自拍) during their walks and upload them to a lab website and also complete a daily online assessment of their current mood. After eight weeks, the scientists compared the groups’ responses and photos. Not surprisingly, the awe walkers felt happier, less upset and more socially connected than the control group members.

The findings are subjective, though, since awe, like other emotions, is difficult to quantify, but Dr. Sturm thinks awe walks could be a simple thing for small wonders without any downside.

1What makes the new study different from the previous ones?

A.It concentrated on older people.

B.It found the solution to mental health.

C.It associated physical exercise with happiness.

D.It took both activity and awe into consideration.

2What can we learn from paragraph 3?

A.The volunteers were suffering mental diseases.

B.Only the control group practiced weekly walks.

C.The study volunteers were divided by age.

D.Novelty can produce awe feelings.

3Why are the findings regarded subjective?

A.The number of volunteers is small.

B.The awe emotion is hard to measure.

C.The daily assessments are difficult to complete.

D.The period of the experiment isn’t long enough.

4What is the attitude of Dr. Sturm to “awe walks”?

A.Skeptical. B.Supportive. C.Indifferent. D.Critical.
