21、Jonathan Lawler loves to work the land. For seven years,he operated Lawler Farms,a forprofit produce farm, harvesting nearly 700,000 pounds of food annually.

Now he’s on a mission to feed the hungry in Central Indiana.Lawler has turned his 36acre farm into a nonprofit operation called Brandywine Creek Farms. His goal for the first year is to donate 500,000 pounds of food, which he said is realistic based on the farm’s produce capacity(产量) and the addition of a large number of volunteers to help through the season. On top of that,Lawler has worked together with Gleaners,Midwest Food Bank,Kenneth Butler Soup Kitchen and other area food banks as distribution partners.

Lawler, who also owns a transportation consulting firm that helps pay the bills, says his 15yearold son inspired him to start thinking differently when it came to his farm.“He came home from school and talked about kids who take home food from the food bank,”Lawler said.“My awareness of hunger was limited to the homeless in Downtown Indianapolis. The last place I would expect it is in a rural farming community like where I live.”As he began to look around,he realized that the farms in Hancock and surrounding counties produce tons of corn, soybeans and wheat,“but nothing you can just pick up and eat,” he said.

Lawler and most of his neighbors are selfsufficient(自给自足的).They grow what they need or have access to quality food at supermarkets. If he needs something he didn’t grow himself,he can jump in his truck and drive 12 minutes to the nearest store.“But for someone who doesn’t have reliable transportation, that 12minute drive could be a twohour hike,” he said.

22、While psychologists have studied topics like happiness, optimism, and other human strengths for decades, positive psychology wasn’t officially identified as a branch of psychology until 1998 when Martin Seligman was elected president of the American Psychological Association (APA). Seligman suggested that psychology had become too focused on mental illness. While this had brought about valuable treatments that enabled psychologists to treat a number of diseases and disorders that made people less unhappy. It meant that psychology was neglecting what was good about life—and what the average person could improve.

Seligman called for research into what makes normal people’s lives positive and fulfilling and suggested that the field should develop interventions that could make people happier. He stated that psychology should be just as concerned with nurturing (滋养) the good things in life as it was with healing the bad.

Seligman made positive psychology the theme of his term as APA president and used his role to popularize the word. From there the field took off. It received a great deal of attention from mainstream media outlets. Meanwhile, the first Positive Psychology summit was held in 1999, followed by the first International conference on Positive Psychology in 2002.

Interest in positive psychology has remained high ever since. In 2018, a quarter of the undergraduate students at Yale University enrolled in a course devoted to the subject of happiness. In 2019, 1,600 individuals attended the World Congress of Positive Psychology and research in the field has generated tens of thousands of academic papers.

Psychologist Christopher Peterson pointed out that positive psychology is meant to serve as an extension of the areas of psychology that focus on mental illness and human weakness. Positive psychologists don't wish to replace or abandon the study of human problems, they simply wish to add the study of what’s good in life to the field.

23、Collingwood Children’s Farm is an inner-city oasis (绿洲). For 40 years, this beautiful farm with pigs, chickens and vegetable gardens has provided a taste of the countryside in Melbourne.

The four-hectare farm is no throwback to the past. It is providing a glimpse of our future. In a time when a changing climate and population growth are causing concerns about food security, the farm is becoming a model for how we might change our approach to inner-city food production. The farm’s primary purpose has always been to support those in the community experiencing disadvantage. However, the not-for-profit has also spent the past year becoming a model of best-practice inner-city agriculture.

Since mid-2020, an unused field has slowly been transformed into a bio-intensive vegetable garden. On top of that, new horticulturalists (园艺专家) have been employed to help build vegetable gardens that will help the soil. Horticulturist Rachel Freeman is head of the farm’s vegetable gardens. Freeman says she is a big believer in the importance of “linking people to food systems and showing people what you can do”. When it comes to showing how to educate and engage the community, this farm is hard to beat. In 2019, Collingwood Children’s Farm had an average of 15,000 visitors each month. In April 2020, 17,000 people came through. At that time, Ash and Shacklock were harvesting fast-growing turnip they had sown (播种) between cabbages to make the most of the growing space.

Freeman says the land had a long history of food growing before it became the children’s farm in 1979. The Wurundjeri people cultivated food here for thousands of years before a group of nuns (修女) began growing vegetables on the site in the 1860s. Freeman says that the farm has been “in this amazing state of” change with many new projects under way. However, they are happening at a snail’s pace due to the farm’s focus on making volunteers a part of them, especially people with disadvantage. “We do the work slowly with volunteers,” Freeman says. “This is an active space not a botanical one.”

【1】What is the main purpose of the farm?

A.To deal with global climate change.

B.To set a model for inner-city agriculture.

C.To produce safe food for local people.

D.To support poor people in the community.

【2】What belief does Freeman hold?

A.Education is the key to great success.

B.Farms should be built on food system.

C.People should actively participate in farming.

D.People should attach importance to farming.

【3】Why did they sow turnips between cabbages on the farm?

A.To satisfy children’s curiosity.

B.To help cabbages grow better.

C.To attract more visitors to join.

D.To use the growing space fully.

【4】What can we learn from these new projects?

A.They are aimed at involving volunteers.

B.They have put volunteers at a disadvantage.

C.They are gaining popularity among children.

D.They have got into some financial difficulties.

24、   Valentine's Day is supposed to be about love and romance. But unfortunately, it can be just the opposite. Because of that, Feb. 15th starts the busy season for divorce lawyers, as people who were unhappy with their marriages heading into the day often decide that they no longer want to be with the one they used to love.

A study of divorce filings (档案) in New York, Illinois and California by AttorneyFee. com, a legal referral (推荐) site, found that February is the busiest month of the year for divorce filings, up about 18% from the average month. And those seeking referrals for a divorce lawyer on the site increase 38% following the holiday, with the biggest rise on the day after Valentine’s.

Another legal site, Avvo. com, reports a 40% increase in those seeking information and advice about divorce in the period right after Valentine’s Day.

“There's a very large number of people who are considering the divorce all the time, deciding whether or not to file," said Richard Komaiko, a co-founder of AttorneyFee. “On Valentine’s Day, this thing is carefully considered.”

Komaiko said February has factors other than the holiday that could lead to an increase in divorces. January is the busiest month of the year for bankruptcy (破产) filings, highlighting the financial problems that often divide couples. In addition, the cold weather of February can keep couples that are having trouble indoors and closer to each other, adding to problems.

But Alton Abramowitz, president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, believes the holiday itself often worsen the relationship for couples who are having trouble. "There’s always the clients who come in a day or two after saying ‘I can’t believe it. I made this beautiful dinner for my husband for Valentine’s Day, but he called to say he was stuck in the office and then didn't come home at all.’" Abramowitz said, “the day can create problems that lead to them finally getting caught."

1What makes Valentine’s Day convey the meaning opposite to love and romance?

A.Valentine's Day won't bring people love and romance.

B.Many divorce filings change the nature of Valentine's Day.

C.Couples having troubles tend to break up after Valentine's Day.

D.Divorce lawyers dislike the atmosphere of Valentine's Day.

2According to the study made by AttorneyFee. com, divorce filings are ________.

A.occurring most after the new year B.less connected with Valentine's Day

C.more likely to be handled online D.at the height of popularity in February

3People intending to divorce may make use of Valentine’s Day to ________.

A.reflect on the divorce B.take legal action

C.make negotiations D.put the divorce aside

4According to Komaiko, why do divorces grow in number in February?

A.Because financial problems and cold weather may bring more problems.

B.Because the long winter holiday makes couples hard to get through.

C.Because the husband is too busy with work to spend the day with his wife.

D.Because Valentine’s Day gets couples into financial trouble.
