21、Growing up in Venezuela, there was never really much cause to learn English. For five years, I spent two hours a week understanding “to be”, numbers, colours, and the differences between saying “good evening” and “good night”. I would always get top marks. Yes, that used to be me, walking like a queen among Spanish speakers every day. “Bring it on, life,” I said. “I can deal with whatever you will give.”
But when I moved to Canada, life hit me so hard that it knocked me down. Years later, I was still recovering. Living in a new land, with different people, new rules, new weather, a new culture and language, I was no longer a queen. Did I speak English? No, not at all. So, I went back to school, thinking that it was a challenge I would conquer in record time. But English was more like a wall in my path. Even after getting a job, it took all my courage to stop myself from crying. I was completely at a loss and scared. Learning English, speaking and listening—it hurt me. Not the language. Not the unkind people. It hurt because I wasn’t good, despite my efforts.
Now, after almost seven years in Canada, I’ve decided not to say sorry for my accent, grammar mistakes, or pronunciation. I’m going to run after my dreams and enjoy a beautiful, rich and fascinating language. Don’t get me wrong. My brain still screams “Give me a break!” from time to time, but that’s completely natural. I know it’s going to take a while, but at least now I accept the person I am—not the perfect person I thought I was.
【1】What can we learn about learning English in Venezuela from the passage?
A.Everyone put in much time.
B.The author didn’t need much effort.
C.Its standard was very high.
D.It brought advantages to students.
【2】What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 show about the author?
A.She looked down on others.
B.She was brave in competitions.
C.She was proud of her level of foreign languages.
D.She felt confident enough to face any challenge.
【3】What happened right after the author moved to Canada?
A.She regretted not working hard in English.
B.She expected to improve her English easily.
C.She quickly put her language talent to use.
D.She found her feet in the new environment quickly.
【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author has a practical understanding of herself.
B.The author can speak English quite well now.
C.The author has conquered her fear of English finally.
D.The author is worried about her English.
22、Whether we’re making small talk with a waiter, or meeting up with a close friend, we may hope to make a connection, only to leave the conversation feeling that our minds have failed to meet. 【1】.
Ask questions
If you want to have a meaningful dialogue with someone, then you should make the effort to ask some questions. 【2】. A follow-up that requires more information about a previous point is more appealing than a “switch” that changes topic, or a “mirror” that simply copies what someone has already asked you.
Be cautious about empathy(同理心)
We are often told to place ourselves in other people’s shoes. But our empathy is rarely as accurate as we think it is. 【3】. “It’s when I’m using my own experience, my own mental states, as a representative of yours,” says Nicholas Epley, a professor of behavioural science. “And we fail to differentiate sufficiently between the two.” In general, it’s far better to ask someone what they actually think and feel than trying to guess it.
Favor familiarity over originality
【4】? The drawback of novelty arises from the “informational gaps” in our conversation. If we are talking about something completely new, our audience may not have enough knowledge to understand everything that we are saying. If we are talking about something already familiar to our audience, however, the listeners can fill in those gaps themselves.
Don't be afraid to go deep
This need for common ground should not limit our conversation to dull small talk. 【5】. And most people appreciate the chance to explore their innermost thoughts and feelings, even if they are talking to perfect strangers.
When practicing each of these steps, you should always remain conscious of the other person’s mood and comfort. With a little strategy, sensitivity and a genuine interest in the people around you, you may often find that greater social connection is easily within your reach.
A.One reason for this is being self-centered
B.But not all questions are equally appealing
C.If this rings true for you, help may be at hand
D.How about our choices for the topic of conversation
E.That will make us become a considerate and sympathetic person
F.Why do people tend to talk with each other about the things they both like
G.On the contrary, many shared human experiences can be incredibly meaningful
23、It is a question people have been asking for ages. Is there a way to turn back the aging process?
For centuries, people have been looking for a “fountain of youth.” The idea is that if you find a magical fountain, and drink from its waters, you will not age. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon searched for waters with magical powers in the early 1500s. But what he found instead is the American state of Florida.
Researchers in New York did not find an actual fountain of youth, but they may have found a way to turn back the aging process. It appears the answer may be hidden right between your eyes, in an area called the hypothalamus.
The hypothalamus is part of your brain. It controls important activities within the body. Cai Dongsheng, a professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, found that hypothalamus stem cells influence how fast aging takes place in the body as well. He also reported that when the hypothalamus starts aging, so does the body.
“So when hypothalamus function is in decline, particularly the loss of hypothalamus stem cells, and this protection against the aging development is lost, it eventually leads to aging.”
Using this information, the researchers began trying to activate (激活) or energize the hypothalamus in laboratory mice. They did this by injecting (注射) the animals with stem cells. Later, the researchers examined tissues and tested for changes in behavior. They looked for changes in the strength of the animals’ muscles. They also studied the social behavior and cognitive (认知) ability of the mice.
The researchers say the results show that the treatment slowed aging in the animals. Cai says injecting middle-aged mice with stem cells from younger mice helped the older animals live longer.
These findings could lead to new ways to help doctors identify and treat any number of health issues concerning aging problems. If the mice can live longer, does that mean people could have longer lives? This is the question Cai and his team are thinking about.
【1】What did Juan Ponce de Leon find?
A. The American state of Florida.
B. Magical powers.
C. A Fountain of youth.
D. A way to stop the aging process.
【2】What do we know about the hypothalamus?
A. It is located in the eyes.
B. It starts aging due to the increase of its stem cells.
C. It plays a key role in controlling the aging process.
D. It functions well when the body starts aging.
【3】What did the researchers do during the experiment?
A. They strengthened the muscles of the mice.
B. They examined tissues and tested the behaviour of mice.
C. They injected the stem cells into the younger mice.
D. They changed the social behavior and cognitive ability of the mice.
【4】What would the researchers probably do next?
A. Inject stem cells of mice into humans.
B. Research on the cognitive psychology.
C. Help the mice live longer.
D. See if anti-aging effects also work in human beings.
24、Composer George Lam has always liked writing music inspired by places.
“There are all these places in Chinatown that are both hidden and meaningful,” he says, stepping out of the way of passers-by while leading a tour of the neighborhood. “To uncover some of those hidden things in a city walk that you might not ordinarily notice—I wondered, is there a piece in that?”
It turns out that there’s not just a piece, but a whole app. Lam interviewed five Chinese Americans from around the country, asking them about their experiences in Chinatown, plus questions about their ancestors, their families and their memories. He then set the answers to music, the instruments drawing attention to each person’s distinct pattern of speech.
Lam created the app Family Association. He calls the piece—the free app—Family Association, after the important folk groups that line the streets of the neighborhood. Chinese family associations have been a bridge between new immigrants and more established ones since the late 1800s. In Chinatowns across the country, they’re a place to find resources or an apartment, talk business or politics, maybe get a COVID shot. But they’re also a place to socialize with people who share similar experiences.
Five of the neighborhood’s associations are anchors(锚点) for the app. Visitors use the build-in map to see locations of the associations. As they walk closer to one of the family association buildings, the focus is on one of the five oral history participants, telling their stories. These stories aren’t about the family associations; instead they’re about the Chinese-American experience and how they’ve felt supported by Chinatown.
But Lam thinks of the app itself as a kind of virtual family association, connecting these Chinese-American voices with each other, even if they’ve never met. And he hopes to connect with visitors, too—at the end of the soundwalk, users are given a chance to record their own memories.
【1】How did Lam deal with the interviewees’ answers?
A.By setting them apart.
B.By organizing them in order.
C.By adding music to them.
D.By spreading them nationwide.
【2】What are the participants’ stories about?
A.When they came to Chinatowns.
B.What they experienced as Chinese Americans.
C.How they’ve felt supported from China.
D.Why they chose to stay in Chinatowns.
【3】What can we know from paragraph 4?
A.Chinatown plays a vital role in Chinese Americans.
B.Lam named his app after the street of the neighbourhood.
C.All Chinese Americans lived in Chinatowns when firstly reaching America.
D.Chinese family associations have been a bridge of immigrants since 1800.
【4】What is Lam’s expectation?
A.To promote his new app.
B.To connect with Chinese cities.
C.To record his own memories.
D.To associate with visitors.
