二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、There is something to be said for being a generalist, even if you are a specialist. Knowing a little about a lot of things that interest you can add to the richness of a whole, well-lived life.

Society pushes us to specialize, to become experts. This requires commitment to a particular occupation, branch of study or research. The drawback to being specialists is that we often come to know more and more about less and less. There is a great deal of pressure to master one's field. You may pursue training, degrees, or increasing levels of responsibility at work. Then you discover the pressure of having to keep up.

Some people seem willing to work around the clock in their narrow specialty. But such commitment can also weaken their sense of freedom. These specialists could work at the office until ten each night, then look back and realize they would have loved to have gone home and enjoyed the sweetness of their family and friends, or traveled to exciting places, meeting interesting people Mastering one thing to the exclusion of others can hold back your true spirit.

Generalists, on the other hand, know a lot about a wide range of subjects and view the whole with all its connections. They are people of ability, talent, and enthusiasm who can bring their broad perspective (视角) into specific fields of expertise (专长). The doctor who is also a poet and Philosopher, is a superior doctor, one who can give so much more to his patients than just good medical skills.

Things are connected. Let your expertise in one field fuel your passions in all related areas. Some of your interests may not appear to be connected but, once you explore their depths, you discover that they are. My editor Toni, who is also writer, has edited several history books. She has decided to study Chinese history. Fascinate by the structural beauty of the Forbidden City as a painter, she is equally interested to learn more about Chinese philosophy. “I don't know where it will lead, but I'm excited I'm on this pursuit.”

These expansions into new worlds help us by giving us new perspectives. We begin to see the interconnectedness of one thing to another in all aspects of our life, of ourselves and the universe. Develop broad, general knowledge and experience. The universe is all yours to explore and enjoy.

22、   A horse fair is an interesting place. There were young horses from the country, little Welsh ponies and many beautiful horses too. But there were also a lot of poor, thin horses, tired from hard work. I was very sad to see them.

At the horse fair there was a man with a gentle voice and kind grey eyes. He offered 23 pounds for me, but they refused. Then a man with a very loud voice came. I was afraid he was going to buy me, but he walked off. Then the grey-eyed man came back again and said,

“I'll give 24 for him.”

“Done,” said the salesman. “He's a quality horse and if you want him for cab work, he's a bargain.

Half an hour later we set off for London, along country roads, until we came to that great city. There were streets to the right, and streets to the left. We went into one of the small streets, and then into a very narrow street, with small, old houses.

My owner stopped at a house. The door opened, and a woman, a little girl and a boy, came out.

"Is he gentle, father?"

“Yes, Dolly, as gentle as a kitten; you can pat him.”

Dolly, the little girl, patted my shoulder without fear. It felt so good! They led me into a comfortable, clean stable, and after a delicious meal I lay down to sleep, thinking “I'm going to be very happy here. ”

My new owner's name was Jerry. His wife was called Polly and they had two children, Harry and Dolly. The next morning they came to see me. I loved it when they patted me and spoke in gentle voices.

"Let's call him 'Jack', after the old horse, shall we, Jerry?” said Dolly.

“Yes, let's," said Jerry.

The first week of my life as Jack, the London cab horse was very hard. The noise and the people and the traffic on the streets scared me. But Jerry was a very good driver, and that helped a lot. Jerry soon found that I was ready to work hard and do my best, and he didn't whip me.

He kept me very clean, and gave me as much food as I wanted. But the best thing was that I had Sundays off.

23、A new study finds constantly engaging in negative thinking patterns may increase the risk of dementia (痴呆). In the study of people aged over 55, researchers found repetitive negative thinking (RNT) was linked to memory decline as well as the deposition of harmful brain proteins linked to dementia.

Lead author Dr Natalie Marchant said, “Depression and anxiety in mid-life and old age are already known to be risk factors for dementia. Here, we found that certain thinking patterns involved in depression and anxiety could be an underlying reason why people with those disorders are more likely to develop dementia.”

Over a period of two years, the study participants responded to questions about how they typically think about negative experiences, focusing on RNT patterns like reflection on the past and worry about the future. The participants also completed measures of depression and anxiety symptoms. Their cognitive function was assessed, measuring memory, attention, spatial cognition and language. Some of the participants also underwent PET brain scans, measuring deposits of two proteins which cause the most common type of dementia, when they build up in the brain.

The researchers found that people who exhibited higher RNT patterns experienced more cognitive declines over a four-year period and declines in memory, which are among the earlier signs of dementia, and they were more likely to have protein deposits in their brain. “We think that repetitive negative thinking may be a new risk factor for dementia as it could contribute to dementia in a unique way,” said Dr Marchant.

Co-author Dr Gael Chételat commented, “Our thoughts can have a biological impact on our physical health, which might be positive or negative. Mental training practices such as deep thought might help promote positive thinking, and down-regulate negative-associated mental plans. Looking after your mental health is important, and it should be a major public health priority, as it's not only important for your health and well-being, but it could also impact your eventual risk of dementia.”

【1】What do the finding of the study indicate?

A.Depression and anxiety are main emotions in later life.

24、Welcome to your future life!

You get up in the morning and look into the mirror. Your face is firm and young-looking. In 2035, medical technology is better than ever. Many people your age could live to be 150, so at 40, you’re not old at all. And your parents just had an anti-aging(抗衰老的) treatment. Now, all three of you look the same age !

You say to your shirt, “Turn red.” It changes from blue to red. In 2035, “smart clothes” contain particles(粒子) much smaller than the cells in your body. The particles can be programmed to change your clothes’ color or pattern.

You walk into the kitchen. You pick up the milk, but a voice says, “You shouldn’t drink that!” Your fridge has read the chip (芯片) that contains information about the milk , and it knows the milk is old . In 2035, every article of food in the grocery store has such a chip.

It’s time to go to work. In 2035, cars drive themselves. Just tell your “smart car” where to go. On the way, you can call a friend using your jacket sleeve(袖子). Such “smart technology” is all around you.

So will all these things come true? “For new technology to succeed,” says scientist Andrew Zolli , “it has to be so much better that it replaces what we have already.” The Internet is one example --what will be the next?

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Children are like sweet-sour candy; no matter who you are or where you are, they please you. Laughter tickles, and innocence is their beauty which everyone adores. They are rich with joy, and purity. Yesterday, a sweet scene occupied me.

It was a summer morning. Sun poured its rays on the earth like holy wine. I was waiting for the shuttle at the bus station wearing my uniform, a white shirt with gray bottoms. Few people arrived and some departed from the bus stop to their destination. In a while, there came a young couple with their daughter.

The little girl was around 4 or 5 years. As they arrived, the baby caught everyone’s attention with her little naughty things.

She was wearing a yellow dress. Yellow was giving her a fresh look just like a sunflower: rise and shine. Her red curly hair was like cotton candy. The most eye-catching factor was her big round eyes. All black and dense having the glimpse of spark to explore everything. She was observing and scanning everything with her little black eyes.

There came an ice cream man. I could see immediately after the van played music; she asked her mother for something, but she denied it. Then she requested her father, he politely refused. She tied her hands and sat on the footpath as the sign she is offended. Red apple cheeks increased her cuteness.

While she was sitting there, a stray puppy (流浪狗) showed himself under the chairs. As soon as she saw him, the little girl rushed toward the dog and carried him. Her happiness was beyond passing over so did the puppy. He was skinny, muddy, and hungry too. “Emma don’t, he is dirty. You might mess yourself up,” her mom reminded her. “But mommy he is hungry and cold and should be fed and sheltered,” Emma said in a melodious voice as a request.
