二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Can you believe everything that you read? It seems as if every day, some new articles come out about a new discovery about this or that. For example, water is bad for you, or good for you. The answer depends on which scientific study has just come out. People cannot decide which food items are healthy, how pyramids were constructed, and why dinosaurs disappeared. When we look for answers we sometimes can believe persuasive researches and scientists. But how trustworthy are they really? Here are two examples of scientific hoaxes (骗局).

As far back as 1726, Johann Beringer was fooled by his fellow scientists into thinking he had made an amazing discovery. The fossils of spiders, lizards, and even birds with the name of God written on them in Hebrew were unlike anything that had been found before. He wrote several papers on them and was famous for those only to have it revealed that they were planted by jealous colleagues to ruin his reputation.

When an early human being was discovered in 1912, scientists at this time were wild with excitement over the meaning it had for the theory of evolution. There were hundreds of papers about this Piltdown man over the next fifty years until it was finally discovered to be a complex hoax. The skull (头骨) of a man had been mixed with the jawbone of an orangutan (猩猩) to make the ape (猿) man.

The next time you read the exciting new findings of a study of the best scientist, do not automatically assume that it is true. Even qualified people can get it wrong. Though we certainly should not ignore scientific research, we do need to take it with a grain of salt. Just because it is accepted as the truth today does not mean it will still be trustworthy tomorrow.

【1】What is the reason why Johann Beringer was fooled?

A. His fellow scientists wanted to make fun of him.

B. His workmates are eager to become famous too.

C. These scientists made a mistake because of carelessness.

D. His colleagues was jealous of him and did so to destroy his fame.

【2】The excited scientists thought that this Piltdown man ________.

A. was in fact a complex hoax

B. was a great scientific invention

C. contributed to the theory of evolution

D. had the skull like that of an ape

【3】What does the underlined phrase “with a grain of salt” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. Happily.   B. Generally.

C. Doubtfully. D. Completely.

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

A. Hebrew is probably a kind of language.

B. Truths of science will never be out of time.

C. People believe scientists because they are persuasive.

D. We are advised to believe famous scientists.

22、What’s really green?

Most of us are aware that we must take care of the environment, and the majority of us take steps to save energy and reduce waste and pollution. But recently, some “green truths” have been shown to be only half true, or even completely false. 【1】

Paper shopping bags are better than plastic ones.

Plastic bags cause litter and are a danger to wild animals, which mistake them for food. It takes hundreds of years for plastic to break down, but much less time for paper. Because of this, people think paper bags are the better environmental choice.

However, making a paper bag uses four times as much energy as making a plastic bag and up to three times the amount of water. 【2】 In fact, both kinds of bags are bad for the environment. So, take a reusable bag with you when you go shopping.

【3】

It seems like common sense: eating local food should be better for the environment, because it does not need to be transported long distances and kept cold during transport. 【4】 It is the production of food, not its transport, that uses most of the energy and produces most of the greenhouse gases. In some cases, local produce might have used more energy and produced more greenhouse gases than produce grown a long way away-even taking into account its transport.

It’s better to take a shower than a bath.

【5】 If you spend more than eight minutes in a shower, you’ll use as much water as in a bath-about 50 litres of water. Therefore, the key is to keep your shower time as short as possible.

Environmental awareness is now part of daily life. But it’s worth checking common ideas and opinions to see what’s really green.

A.So say no to plastic bags.

B.Here are some common ones.

C.Unfortunately, it is not that simple.

D.Eating local food is good for the environment.

E.The process also produces more greenhouse gases.

F.It’s time that we took measures to protect our environment.

G.It depends on how long you spend in the shower and how large your bath is.

23、七选五。根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Four Ways to Be a Great Roommate

Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst.【1】Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.

◇Talk things out. Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I've seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs.【2】

◇Don't expect to be best friends. Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don't. Don't put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet.【3】And if your roommate doesn't end up being your best friend, don't worry.

◇Ask before you take. This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first.【4】

◇Clean up after yourself. This should do without saying. Don't be lazy. Or, at least, don't bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people I've come across in college are messy.【5】But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.

A.So you need to think twice before you help your roommates out.

B.This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappiness.

C.Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.

D.You don't have all the time to clean your room and keep it organized.

E.It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your roommate.

F.Sometime you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.

G.Remember, you're trying to make a new friend, not to scare your roommate away.
