二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   You know marketers follow you all around the Internet, but you might be surprised to learn who or what else is keeping track of your every move. You are being stalked (跟踪) everywhere you go. In your car. On your morning walk. Even in your own home—by your own TV.

In our hyperconnected world, where your phone is always with you, information is being collected—and shared—every nanosecond.

“So what?” you say. “I have nothing to hide.” Don't be so sure. As privacy expert Bennet Cyphers told a reporter for the New York Times's Privacy Project, “The only people I've heard say ‘Who cares?’ are people who don't understand the scope of the problem.”

The problem is that while corporations and data brokers are hoovering up all the information they can lay their hands on, there are no laws governing what they can do with that information—or whom they can sell it to. That includes things you thought were private, such as health and financial data, as well as your beliefs and daily habits.

Someone knowing that you ordered three extra-large pizzas with the works for dinner last Friday night may seem harmless enough, but there's a deeper principle at play. As cyber expert Bruce Schneier puts it, privacy is not just about freedom from embarrassment. “Privacy is an inherent human right, and a requirement for maintaining the human condition with dignity and respect,” he says.

Yet we do little to block the spies. We click “I Agree” without reading the user agreements. We say we'll do one of those privacy checkups one day, but we never quite get around to it. And that means your personal information could be used against you in the future in ways you can't imagine today.

1What is the problem discussed in the text?

A.People don't do security checkups often enough.

B.People's freedom is being harmed by the Internet.

C.People don't care enough about online privacy leaks.

D.People's private information is being collected illegally.

2What does the underlined phrase “hoovering up” probably mean?

A.Reviewing. B.Offering.

C.Gathering D.Analyzing.

3What does Bruce Schneier say about privacy?

A.It allows people more freedom. B.It is about avoiding embarrassment.

C.It calls for dignity and respect. D.It is essential to living with dignity.

4What might the author write about in the following paragraphs?

A.What we can do to protect our privacy.

B.When the problem is expected to be solved.

C.Who should take responsibility for data safety.

D.How companies protect consumers' information.

22、Scientists recently discovered that pictures on cave walls at Creswell Crags are the oldest know in Great Britain. But they didn’t find in the usual way.

Archaeologists often date cave art with a process called radiocarbon dating. The technique can measure the age of carbon found in charcoal(木炭) drawings or painted pictures. Carbon is an element(成分)found in many things, including charcoal and even people. But in this case, there was no paint things or charcoal to test. People carve the pictures of animals and figure into the rock using stone tools. The scientists had an “aha!” moment when they noticed small rocks stuck to the top of the drawings. The small rocks must have formed after the drawings were made. “It is rare to be able to scientifically date rock art,” said Alistair Pike, and archaeological scientist at Britain’s University of Bristol. “We were very fortunate that some of the engravings (雕刻) were covered by stalagmites(石笋).”

When a test proved that the stalagmites formed 12,800years ago, the scientists knew the art underneath them had to be at least that old. And some of the animals shown, like the European bison, are now extinct, another tip-off (征兆) that the art is quite old.

The artists came to Creswell Crags. This place is one of the farthest points north reached by our ancient ancestors during the Ice Age. At that time, much of the North Sea was dry, so people could move about more easily.

Some tools and bones found there are 13,000 to 15,0000 years old. They show that the travelers hunted horses, reindeer, and arctic hares. Their artwork is similar to art in France and Germany. It tells scientists that the Creswell Crags artists must have had a close connection to peoples several thousand kilometers away---- another important evidence of understanding how humans spread out across the world.

23、A series of activities were held in Beijing to celebrate World Book Day in April. Some focused on helping children form a reading habit. To help parents select the suitable reading materials, a book list for children compiled (编纂) by experts was recently released at the Chinese Museum of Women and Children.

The list called Kingdom of Little Bookworms is divided into two parts - one for children aged 3 to 6, and the other for those above 6. “We still don’t have an official system of reading levels in China,” says Bai Bing, an experienced children’s book writer. More than half of the 35 books recommended for children under age 6 are picture books in simple language, while the other 42 books for older children deal with wider topics and require better comprehension ability.

During the book list’s release, experts also emphasized parents’ role in cultivating children’s reading habit. “At home, if parents watch TV and are on gadgets all the time, it’s hard to imagine that their children will have a good reading habit,” says Wang Zhigeng, director of the children’s book section at the National Library of China. “Action speaks louder than words. If parents themselves like reading and buying books, the children will imitate — and reading will become a family’s culture.”

Wang points out that reading aloud for the children is important. He says: “To read out loud the story with your emotions, a clear voice and body language — to convey your feelings to your children. It will help the development of children’s abilities of empathy and comprehension.”

Cecilia is a 7th-grader. She, her parents and her brother, Sam, were in Chile’s capital city, Santiago, the day a big earthquake hit Chile. And like just about everyone else, they were shaken out of their sleep.

It was so frightening,” Sam wrote. “The shaking was so huge that I will never go on a ride again.” Cecilia and Sam wrote about their earthquake experiences. Their reports were later posted on the website.

Cecilia, Sam and their parents were staying in an apartment on the 15th floor of a building. They were lucky. Their building stayed standing, because it was built to withstand earthquakes.

Not everyone was as lucky as the Wallace family. More than 800 people died. Many older buildings fell down during the earthquake.

The damage in Santiago wasn’t as bad as in other parts of Chile. So the supermarkets were open for business on the morning of the quake. But it wasn’t business as usual. “The supermarkets have been crazy with people rushing to buy their food for the next while,” Sam wrote.

Not everyone was able to get money to buy food that morning. So Cecilia and Sam made food bags to distribute to people who were begging outside the supermarket. “We gave some to a kid of my age.
