二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、In 1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business. But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera. He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden. That was the first photo.

The next important date in the history of photography was 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. Daguerre invented the Daguerreotype process, which started the history of human flat image. In his picture you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest thing. This kind of photo was called a Daguerreotype.

Soon, other people began to use Daguerre’s way. Travelers brought back wonderful photos from all around the world. People took pictures of famous buildings, cities and mountains.

In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers could take pictures of people and moving things, which was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of film and other machines. But this did not stop them, for example, some in the United States worked so hard. Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The pictures were unusual because they were very lifelike.

Photographers also became one kind of art by the end of the 19th century. Some photos were not just copies of the real world. They showed ideas and feelings, like other art forms.

1The first photo taken by Niepce was a picture of _______.

A. his business   B. his house   C. his garden   D. his window

2The Daguerreotype was_________.

A. a Frenchman   B. a kind of picture   C. a kind of camera   D. a photographer

3If a photographer wanted to take pictures of moving things in the year of 1840, he had to_____.

A. watch lots of films   B. buy himself an expensive camera

C. stop in most cities   D. take lots of film and other things

4Mathew Brady______________.

22、Plenty of harvests of corn and other major crops rely on a mysterious phenomenon known as hybrid vigor (杂交活力). When highly naturally-born varieties are crossed, their next generations are taller, hardier, and bear more grain, Researchers report that this vigor is somehow influenced by microbes (微生物) in the soil, perhaps through a plant's immune system .

Charles Darwin was one of the first researchers to describe hybrid vigor. In the early 20th century, biologists began to apply this effect to agriculture by creating naturally-born parent plants that produced hybrid seeds. By the 1940s, almost every farmer in the United States was planting hybrid corn, and the harvests multiplied.

Biologists have proposed several theories about the cause of hybrid vigor, but no definitive explanation has emerged.

Maggie Wagner, plant biologist at the University of Kansas, and her colleagues wondered whether microbes might be it involved. Last year, Wagner and her colleagues found an interesting clue in a field study. They discovered that the leaves and roots of hybrid corn had microbial communities that are different from those living on naturally-born varieties of corn. “Something about being a hybrid makes a plant interact differently with microbes,” Wagner says. It could be that the naturally-born corn's immune systems react more actively to beneficial microbes, compromising their growth. Alternatively, hybrid plants may be better able to defend against weak pathogens (病原体) in the soil.

Wagner says the finding highlights the need for plant growers to match the hybrid crops to the microbial communities with which they live. The findings help scientists realize the importance of understanding the role of soil microbes in making agriculture more productive and sustainable, “This holds great promise.”

【1】How did people use the effect of hybrid vigor in agriculture?

A.By producing naturally-born parent plants that bore hybrid seeds.

B.By creating naturally-born parent lines that produced hybrid vigor.

C.By providing more microbes communities that could produce more seeds.

D.By looking for hybrid parent plants in the field that produced hybrid seeds.

【2】What can we know from paragraph 4?

A.Hybrid plants react worse to weak pathogens in the soil.

B.Wagner connected hybrid vigor with microbial communities.

C.Being naturally-born makes a plant interact differently with microbes.

D.Hybrid corn and naturally-born corn have similar microbial communities.

【3】What effect would Wagner's finding have?

A.Making farmers know what to grow to resist certain diseases

B.Helping scientist realize the importance of spreading soil microbes.

C.Showing the significance of associating soil microbes with specific crops.

D.Highlighting the need for plant growers to find more microbial communities.

【4】What may be the best title for the text?

A.Hybrid corn: a double-edged sword

B.How can farmers grow hybrid crops?

C.Hybrid vigor: a mysterious phenomenon

D.What role do soil microbes play in the harvests of corn?

23、   Scientists are aksing: What is the best way to fight climate change? A new study says: Plant many trees; one trillion trees, maybe more. Swiss scientists say there is enough room for that many trees. In their report in the journal Science, they say there is enough space on the earth, which could cover nine million square kilometers, an area the size of the United States.

Trees take carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)out of the air, and in return, put oxygen back into the air. The study estimated that over a long period of time, the trees could take in almost 750 billion tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. That is about as much carbon as humans have put into the atmosphere in the past 25 years. What is so bad about carbon dioxide? The gas traps heat, causing temperatures to rise.

Much of the gain from planting trees will come quickly because trees remove more carbon from the air when they are younger, the researchers said. The place that has the best possibility for removing the most carbon is the tropics—the area close to the equator. This method would also have the lowest cost, says the study co-author Thomas Crowther, a climate change ecologist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. This is by far, the cheapest and the most effective climate change solution, he said. The six nations with the most room for new trees are Russia, the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil and China.

Before his study, Crowther thought that there were other more effective ways to fight climate change besides cutting emissions(排放). For example, people could change their diets by no longer eating meat. But, he said, tree planting is far more effective because trees remove so much carbon dioxide from the air.

1The second paragraph mainly tells us _____.

A.how people plant more trees

B.why people should plant more trees

C.when people should plant more trees

D.where people should plant more trees

2Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Trees can’t remove the carbon in the tropics.

B.Trees are less helpful when they are younger.

C.There is enough space to plant one trillion or more trees on the earth.

D.People can only plant trees in Russia, the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil and China.

3What’s the best title of the passage?

A.More trees help fight climate change.

B.Carbon dioxide causes temperatures to rise.

C.Not eating meat is the best way to fight climate change.

D.Cutting emissions is the most effective way to fight climate change.

24、   Daniella Wride was brushing her daughter’s long brown hair when she noticed that with each comb, masses of the hair were coming out. That was January 1, 2017. Within 20 days, seven-year-old Gianessa Wride’s hair was completely gone, and her doctor said the hair would never grow back. Gianessa had become one of the 6.8 million Americans with alopecia, an auto-immune disease that causes hair loss.

Alopecia isn’t painful, but for kids who suffer from it, the severe pain comes from standing out from the crowd. For the most part, the students in Gianessa’s first-grade class in Salem, Utah, were understanding. But the occasional jokes of “Baldy”(秃子) made her feel like an abandoned child. “I didn’t want her to feel that she wasn’t like the other kids,” her mother said. “I tried covering her baldness, but the artificial hair was uncomfortable.”

Then comes the school’s traditional “Crazy Hair Day” in April, a great just-for-fun celebration where all the kids and their parents can express their wild sides a bit. Daniella and Gianessa decided that rather than hide Gianessa’s baldness under the artificial hair, they would celebrate it. Daniella bought scrapbook-sticker(贴纸) jewels and decorated her head with flowered designs and even a deer. “They just fit her personality,” Daniella smiled. “She’s so lovely.”

On the morning of the competition, Gianessa was nervous. Would her friends think it was funny? However, with her mother’s encouragement, she had nothing to fear. Impressive Gianessa was a hit and a winner of the crazy-hair competition. Gianessa is now glad that she dared to go bare. “I was sad at first when I lost all my hair,” she told people. “But now I love being bald. I can do things to my head that other kids can’t. I’m thinking now it might be fun to decorate my head with some colourful butterflies and flowers.”

1Why was Gianessa different from other kids?

A.She was born bald. B.She suffered from hair loss.

C.She was talented in hair designing. D.She had her head fully shaved.

2How did others react to Gianessa’s disease?

A.Her doctor was quite optimistic. B.Her mother gave her artificial hair.

C.Her classmates were all considerate. D.Her school offered her special help.

3What could Gianessa do on the “Crazy Hair Day”?

A.She could tease others. B.She could decorate her hair.

C.She could shop scrapbook-stickers. D.She could show her personality.

4What is the main idea of the text?

A.The artificial hair built up the girl’s confidence.

B.The girl faced her disease in a most beautiful way.

C.The competition served as a way to make a change.

D.The disease was cured with mother’s love and care.
