21、   In an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, many New York City venues are closed. Here’s a selection of art to be found around town.

Jane Freilicher

For more than fifty years, as Abstract Expressionism gave way to Pop, then to Minimalism, and on to Neo-Expressionism, until art’s isms (主义) exhausted themselves, Freilicher devoted herself to painting “eternally fixed afternoons”, finding beauty at home. The fifteen works in the exhibition at the Kasmin gallery, lead you into the artist’s inside.—Andrea K. Scott (kasmingallery.com)

Betye Saar

Two years ago, the Getty Research Institute mentioned Betye Saar as “the conscience (良心) of the art world for over fifty years”. The small but abundant exhibition “Betye Saar: Call and Response”, at the Morgan Library & Museum, pairs the artist’s found-object collection with her less often seen sketchbooks (素描簿).—A.K.S. (themorgan.org)

Frederick Weston

When this black, H. I. V.—positive artist arrived in New York from Detroit, in 1973, he wanted to become a fashion designer. But the city’s culture scene at the time was overwhelmingly white, and Weston withdrew into a world that he could control. An exhibition of Weston’s work is on view at Ortuzar Projects, which is to remind us that society’s best visual critics often fall through the cracks, and to question why it still takes us so long to recognize them.—Hilton Als (ortuzarprojects.com)

Stella Zhong

A raised floor, the color of greenish grey transforms the Chapter gallery into something like a sci-fi stage set or a mini golf course. Zhong, who was born in Shenzhen, China, achieves an effect that is playful and strangely cold. Moving around in the exhibition is rather like living in the space of a video game.—J. F. (chapter-ny.com)

As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from heaven, “Why are you leaving your companion on the island?”

“My blessings are mine alone, since I was the one who prayed for them,” the first man answered. “His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve anything.”

“You are mistaken!” the voice rebuked him. “He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings.”

24、Christmas Traditions

The Origin of Christmas

Since about 400 AD, Christmas Day has been celebrated on 25th December. This date was the old mid-winter festival in pre-Christian times, around the time of the longest night and the shortest day. Christmas in the 21st century has many traditions: Christmas trees, cards and presents.

Presents and shopping

Shops can make about 60 percent of their year’s income in the three months before Christmas. So most shops get ready for it in October. The shopping centres are beautifully decorated and stay open late at night. The first time this happened was in 1867 when Macy’s, a famous shop in New York, stayed open until midnight on Christmas Eve (24th December).

Trees

By mid-December, almost every house, shop and street has a Christmas tree. This tradition was started by the Germans as early as 700 AD. In the northern countries of the world, winter is cold and dark and most trees lose their leaves. The beautiful green trees decorated with lights and coloured glass balls give people hope that spring will come again.

Cards

The tradition of sending cards to friends was started in 1840 in the UK and now millions of Christmas cards and emails are sent all round the world. Cards are a good way of keeping in touch with family and friends who live far away.

Father Christmas

Father Christmas is known across the world with his white hair, red coat and big bag of toys. Young children are told that he lives in the north of Finland and makes toys for them. By tradition, he brings the toys to children at midnight, on the night before Christmas.

Food

On Christmas day a traditional meal is eaten, usually turkey (like a big chicken) and a rich, spicy cake. Some people hate Christmas. Others feel it is a magical and exciting time. They love seeing family and friends; they also love the traditions. Love it or hate it, Christmas is a time to look back over the old year — and forward to the new one.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

There was no sign that the earthquake was coming.

A 7.8 magnitude (震级) quake almost flattened the city, killing over thousands of lives in less than a few minutes.

In the midst of destruction and chaos, a father left his wife securely at home and rushed to the school where his son Daniel was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.

After the upsetting shock, he remembered the promise he had made to Daniel: “No matter what, I’ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. He looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school. Everything looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his commitment to his son.

He began to concentrate on where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the stones and bricks.

As he was digging, other anxious parents arrived, heartbroken, shouting desperately: “Mary!” “Sam!”

Some other well-meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late!” “They’re dead!” “You can’t help!” “Go home!” “Come on! There’s nothing you can do here!” “You’re just going to make things worse!”

To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now?”

And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone.

Some firefighters showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins, saying, “Fires are breaking out, and explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Just go home!” To which this loving, determined father asked, “Are you going to help me now?”

The fire chief replied, “You’re angry and worried. I get it. But you are not helping by staying here. Just go home. We will help you find your son!” To which he replied, “But I promised my son I’ll always be there for him.”
