21、As I walked into my new high school for the first time, I felt uncertain, nervous and lonely. I missed my old friends terribly. My head hurt with the thought of making new friends all over again.
What will my new friends be like? Will we like each other? Will I even make a friend? These questions were on my mind, as I walked over to a group of girls.
I didn’t know anyone in my new school. It seemed like everyone was watching me, as if every head was turning towards me, waiting for me to make a wrong move.
I nervously said “hi” in a low voice, waving my hand at the group. Expecting them to start laughing and making fun of me, I was surprised when they waved back and asked me to sit with them.
As if a switch had been turned off, all the anxious thoughts that had been killing me were gone. A feeling of acceptance and excitement rushed over me as I happily chatted with the six girls, telling them more about myself.
Looking back at how anxious I was upon entering my new school for the first time, I now feel stupid for I had been losing my sleep over something so small. Being myself and being polite had worked out for me just fine. Being confident proved to be the key that fit perfectly into the lock on the door of friendship, the same door that I had been too scared to even knock on before.
I had never expected that by the end of the day I would have any friends at all, let alone six. What I learned from my experience was to welcome everyday surprises with open arms and to accept the good or bad feelings that fill our hearts, the same place where love lives and where new friends are welcomed.

22、Most of us don’t go out at 8 o’clock every morning to buy meat and vegetables for 200 poor children. But artist Yvonne Bezerro de Mello does that daily. Leaving her home in a wealthy district of Rio de Janeiro each day, she spends much of her time in the slums.
There, in a small house she bought, she feeds homeless children. She also gives them affection and protects them from violence. She and a few coworkers teach them to read and write. What motivates her to do this?
“How can I not help?” she says. Yvonne’s mother had taught her from a young age to care about other people. At age 13, she read to blind children twice a week. Since that time, she has helped homeless children.
What happened in 1993 brought more attention to Yvonne’s work. That year, police fired upon 72 homeless children, killing eight of them. Yvonne knew all those children. Shocked and annoyed, she made the incident known around the world. She wrote to newspapers and human rights organizations. Three years later, a policeman was convicted (证明有罪).
Yvonne believes working with street children is a crusade(正义运动). Now in her 50s, she heads up Projeto Uere (Children of Light). The goal of the project is to help children escape life in the streets. Around 120 children from age 3 to 16 come to a special school in one of Rio’s slums. They learn reading, writing, math and art. They also learn how to survive without using violence.

23、Eartha Mae Kitt was born into a poor family in South Carolina in 1927. When Eartha was eight, her mother married. The husband did not want Eartha to live with them because of her mixed race.
Eartha was sent to New York City to live with an aunt in the African-American neighborhood of Harlem. The relationship was difficult. The aunt helped pay for piano and dance lessons for Eartha. But she also beat the girl. Eartha would run away after beatings.
Earth lived in the streets and worked in a factory as a young teenager. But she kept up her dance lessons. One day she decided to try out for a famous African-American dance company. Soon, Eartha was performing in shows around the world with the Katherine Dunham Dance Troupe.
In Paris, Eartha left the dance company to sing in a nightclub. Her voice was unusual - but very appealing. She learned French quickly and gained French fans. The film director Orson Welles discovered Eartha singing in Paris. He called her “the most exciting woman in the world”. Welles asked her to play a lead part in the play he was directing and starring in.
Eartha returned to New York and appeared in the Broadway show New Faces of 1952. A humorous song she sang about a bored, spoiled woman became famous. She soon signed a recording agreement with the record company. Eartha’s songs were all daring, especially for the 1950s. She even made a sexy Christmas song “Santa Baby”, which became her biggest hit.
Eartha's first role in a film was in the 1957 movie Mark of the Hawk with Nat King Cole. She was very careful about choosing her roles in films. She rejected parts that were not respectful to people of color. She said if her choices were bad, it would not help the black actors who came after her.
Eartha Mae Kitt was at home when she died on December 25, 2008. The cause was colon cancer.

24、 Do you like shopping? For shopaholics in the UK, the place to head to used to be the "high street". This location refers to the streets in the centre of a town where businesses and popular branches of retail chains could be found. It was the place where you could find familiar fashion brands and essential everyday items.
But change in our shopping habits has taken its toll on the British high street. News about shops losing money and shutting is now common. Some city-centre department stores have closed and even long-established retailers such as Marks and Spencer have reported profit slumps.
As the BBC's Emma Simpson writes, things have become a lot harder for traditional retailers in recent years. They have faced rising costs from wages, business rates and the requirement to introduce Europe's new data law.
But the biggest threat has come from online shopping. She says, "Consumers now spend one in every five pounds online-and if businesses are seeing 20 percent fewer sales on the shop floor, then profit margins will be squeezed."
While some of us like to window shop-browsing for things to buy, only to purchase them online at a discount-the fact is that, overall, shoppers are making fewer visits to high streets. Eventually, town centres could become like ghost towns. If people aren't out and about shopping, they won't use other services, like cafes, restaurants and cinemas. It also results in job losses.
The British Retail Consortium has already warned that 900, 000 UK retail jobs could be lost by 2025. The high street has also suffered from the coming of big shopping malls, which offer a retail experience under one roof, with free parking, away from the bad weather!
Meanwhile, back on the high street, some shops still exist. Analysts have said it's those that have moved away from traditional retailing that are surviving. These include beauty salons, nail bars and independent coffee shops-but are these kinds of shops enough to keep the British high street open for business?
【1】What is the "high street"?
A.The street in the high places in the UK. B.The street without big shopping malls.

C.Business rates. D.Europe's new data law.
