Tests found that the sheep can map the area they live in, and some may even be able to plan ahead.
Young fish prefer noisy neighbors
A new study has shown that young fish like to live on reefs with noisy neighbors! Researchers from the universities of Auckland and Bristol found that young fish looking for a home choose areas where other noisy fish live. The scientists produced all kinds of sounds which had been recorded in different natural environments. The young fish seemed to prefer the sounds of natural reefs, complete with noisy animals! The scientists compared the choice to a music fan wandering around at a music festival, choosing to set up a tent closest to the music they like best!

22、Rainy days don’t have to get you down, a happiness expert has reported.
Paul Dolan, Professor of Behavioral Science at the London School of Economics, said that people only feel miserable in bad weather because they think about it too much. Studies have shown that people who live in warm, sunny climates are no happier than those in chilly, wet climates, he says. So the British talking about the weather may be making us gloomier(沮丧的) than the weather itself.
He said: “A study was done that measured the happiness levels of people in California compared to the North West. “They expected that people in California would be happier because it is more sunny, but they found that levels of happiness were exactly the same. If it is sunny every day you get used to it and the sunshine doesn’t make you any happier. Most of the time the weather doesn’t influence our well-being at all. But when we think about it, and think that it does, that’s when we get miserable.”
In his new book, Happiness By Design, Dolan argues that we can think ourselves happy by taking our attention away from what makes us sad.
“Most of our anxieties come from what might be,” he argues. “If you want to be happier, pay attention to the things that make you feel good.”
He also claimed that a problem shared was not always a problem halved(减半). He believed that humans are actually very good at being able to get over tragedy(悲剧) and loss.
Professor Dolan also admitted for the first time that he had a stammer(口吃), which had made his early life miserable. He added it only got better when he learned not to pay attention to his speech problem.
“Things are never as bad as you imagine them being,” he said.
【1】What has the research found?
A. British people don’t like to chat about the weather.
B. Cold days make people feel less happy.
C. People are more likely to be happy when the sun is shining.
D. Rainy days have no influence on people’s mood.
【2】What does the underlined word “miserable” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Good. B. Unhappy.
C. Cheerful. D. Confident.
【3】What is Dolan’s suggestion for being happy?
A. Don’t think too much about yourself.
B. Avoid comparing yourself to others.
C. Don’t focus on what makes you sad.
D. Avoid doing many miserable things.
【4】What do we know about Professor Dolan from the text?
A. Once he couldn’t speak fluently.
B. Once he didn’t want to share his problems with others.
C. He has the ability to get over bad things.
D. He has written many books about happiness.
23、 LEGO (乐高) recently announced that they will start producing pieces from sustainable (可持续的) sugar cane. The toys, which will be closely similar to classic ones, will also feature “botanical elements” like leaves, bushes, and trees.
The pieces will be included in LEGO’S box sets from this year onwards. The move is part of the Danish company’s campaign to use sustainable materials in its products by 2030.
However, Tim Brooks, the firm’s vice-president, said, “We want to make a positive influence on the world around us, and are working hard to make great play products for children using sustainable materials. This is a great first step in our goal to make all LEGO pieces using sustainable materials.”
The new line of production has reportedly already started with pieces being produced from polyethylene, which is a soft and durable plastic (耐用的塑料). LEGO says that we needn’t worry about the quality of the new products, as they’ve tested the plant-based plastic to ensure that it meets the high standards for quality and safety that consumers (消费者) expect from the company.
“LEGO products have always been about providing high quality play experiences and giving every child the chance to shape their own world through inventive play. Children and parents will not notice any difference in the quality or appearance of the new pieces, because plant-based polyethylene has the same qualities as traditional polyethylene,” said Tim Brooks.
“It is important that companies in each industry find ways to help ensure a future where people, nature, and the economy grow healthily,” said Alix Grabowski, an officer at WWF. “The LEGO Group’s decision to use sustainable plastics represents a great opportunity to reduce dependence on finite (有限的) resources, and their work with the Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance will allow them to connect with other companies to continue to think creatively about sustainability.”
【1】What do we know about LEGO company?
A. They have designed many new products.
B. They are worried about the quality of the new products.
C. They go green with sugar cane-based plastic.
D. They failed to make great play products for children.
【2】What can we infer from Tim Brooks’ words?
A. Plant-based materials are of high qualities as traditional materials.
B. Consumers expect high standards for quality and safety from LEGO.
C. LEGO wants to make more products.
D. LEGO needn’t test the new products.
【3】What does Alix Grabowski think of LEGO Group’s decision?
A. It is of no significance to our future.
B. It makes other companies more competitive.
C. It sets a good example for other companies.
D. It is mainly dependent on finite resources.
【4】How can we comment on Lego’s new products?

24、I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg last night, a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I was clinching (紧握) my fists with impatience.
At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with the traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I approached the light, it turned red and I braked to stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, waiting for' the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being arrested, because there were obviously no police around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.
Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of an agreement we all have with each other. It's not only the law, but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights.
It's amazing that we ever trust each other to do the right thing, isn't it? And we do, too. Trust is our first tendency. We have to make a deliberate decision to mistrust someone or to be suspicious or skeptical. Those attitudes don't come naturally to us.
It's a very good thing too, because the whole structure of our society depends on mutual trust, not distrust. This whole thing around us would fall apart if we didn't trust each other most of the time. We do what we say we'll do; we show up when we say we'll show up; we deliver when we say we'll deliver; and we pay when we say we'll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and when we don't do what we've promised, it's far from the normal. It happens often that we don't act in good faith and in a trustworthy manner, but we still consider it unusual, and we're angry or disappointed with those badly-behaved people. Anyway I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.
【1】Why did the author feel impatient while driving?

【4】What is the theme of the passage?
A. Mutual Trust is the best policy.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When parents take part in our school events, it is usually embarrassing. A few weeks ago, it was my mom who played the embarrassing parent role.
While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And, right then and there, my mom said, “I know the perfect song-and-dance. I’ll teach it to the kids!”
Before I could say “Please don’t,” my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear, she is not a professional entertainer at all; my parents run a small grocery store.
“Um,” I said on our way home, “Are you sure this is such a good idea?”
“Of course!” she said. “We’ll have fun!”
“OK, guys,” my teacher said at 9: 28 on Monday. “We’re going to stop silent reading a little early because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair. Let’s welcome Arizona’s mother.” I looked up and discovered my mom standing at the front of the room wearing the world’s funniest big hat.
“I’m super excited to be here with you!” my mom said. “I’m going to teach you a fun little song-and-dance I learned a few years ago, when I did some theater in college. Here it goes!”
“Oh, please, oh, please,” I said over and over in my head, “let there be a fire drill, or an urgent meeting, or a power cut, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself—and me!”
But apparently, my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.
I closed my eyes, covered my ears, and sank as low as I possibly could in my chair.
