21、As a capital city full of art and history, London is an important political centre and a huge financial marketplace. Whatever you think about London, visiting as a tourist is very different from living there. Each part of London has its own character. Some parts are richer than others, or more industrial, or have better housing.
Let’s start with the centre, the “Square Mile”. This is the oldest part of London. In the past, it was where all financial business was done. Not many people live here, but 300,000 people work here every day.
Moving west, we come to the West End. This busy shopping and entertainment district is bursting with things to do. Take a walk down Oxford Street, and you will see big department stores like Selfridges and Harrods. Rents here are very high; a one-bedroom apartment may cost around 1,000 pounds a week. Further away is West London. This area is more residential(住宅的)and very fashionable.
The East End contains the Port of London, which historically is where many immigrants first arrived. Waves of French, Belgians, Jews, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis have all lived here. This makes the culture of this area very various. London won the bid to hold the Olympics in 2012, so many Londoners hope that housing, education and employment for many people in this area will improve.
It is difficult to be general about London. The city is made up of a " collection of villages”, each area with its own character and community. Put them all together, and you have London, an international capital.
【1】Which of the following descriptions about Square Mile is NOT true?
A. It is the oldest part of London.

22、Our Amazing Hands
The hand is where the mind meets the world. We use our hands to build fires, to fly airplanes, and to write. The human brain, with its open-ended creativity, may be the thing that makes the human race unique. But without hands, all the ideas we think up would come to nothing.
【1】 Study it carefully, you will find something interesting. The thumb (拇指) alone is controlled by nine separate muscles. The wrist is a group of bones and muscles connected with nerves (神经). The nerves send branches into each fingertip, which makes the fingers extremely flexible. 【2】
Early hands seemed more unusual and interesting than any hand today. Some animals had seven fingers. Others had eight. But by the time vertebrates (脊椎动物) appeared 340 million years ago, the hand had developed to only five fingers. 【3】
Nevertheless, there are still many different types of hands in living animals. After years of research, scientists are beginning to understand the molecular (分子的) changes in hands. 【4】 This makes the hands of different animals very similar. There is a network of many genes (基因) that builds a hand, and all hands are built on that network.
The discovery has given scientists a deeper understanding of the development of hands. A bird’s wing and a lion’s paw (爪) may appear to have nothing in common. 【5】 It may just be a little more of one protein (蛋白) here, a little less of another there. In the past, scientists could recognize only the outward signs that hands had developed from a common ancestor. Today scientists are uncovering the inward signs as well.
A.Hands can often be used for a number of different purposes.
B.They also see that all hands start out in much the same way.
C.It has kept that number for reasons scientists don’t yet know.
D.No one would doubt that the five fingers are different with each other.
E.But the difference between them may come down to a tiny change in form.
F.The reason we can use our hands for so many things is their special structure.
G.So you can see a skilled watchmaker use his hands to set springs in place under a microscope.
23、Carson Kropfl, 11, came up with his idea because no company sold what he wanted. “Everything else fits into my locker (柜子) —my books, my bag, my lunch—but not my skateboard,” he said. So in 2013, Carson broke the nose and tail off a full-size skateboard to make a locker-size board.
At the time, Carson was saving for surfing lessons. His mom, Carrie, told him he needed to do that on his own. He decided to sell the boards at school. For months, he sold them during lunch for $20 each, until he’d saved $1, 000 for lessons. After hitting his financial goal, Carson realized he liked running a business. But he needed start-up capital. Again, his mom said he had to find a way to get it himself. “So that’s exactly what he set out to do,” Carrie says. Carson approached the company Vans to see if he could get some of their used skateboards for free. Vans set up a recycling program for him, and started giving him 50 used boards per month.
Carson first applied for Shark Tank in 2013. The producers turned him down because his company wasn’t big enough. But every six months, he checked in with the producers again. In 2017, they finally said yes. At the shoot, Carson made his pitch (陈述), with the help of his mom. Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Records, Virgin Airlines and hundreds of other companies decided to invest (投资). Since then, Carson has sold more than 1, 000 boards. His company has grown more than 300%. He plans to expand to Canada, the U. K. , and Australia. He credits his mom, who has her own title at Locker Board: Chief Mom Officer. She runs day-to-day operations while Carson is in school.
Locker Board was created because Carson had a problem. Identify a problem in your life. Can you come up with a solution? How could you turn your idea into a business?
【1】What made Carson invent the locker-size skateboard?
A.The problem he faced.
B.His mother’s constant help.
C.His own interest in business.
D.No company’s helping him.
【2】What advice did Carson get from his mother to achieve what he wanted?
A.Learning to save boards.
B.Financing himself.
C.Negotiating with other bosses.

24、Brazilian pet shop chain Petz has combined face-recognition technology and artificial intelligence to create a groundbreaking platform which allows dogs to buy their favorite products.
There’s nothing more discouraging for dog owners than buying new toys that their dogs dislike. Thanks to Pet-Commerce, an online pet store created by Brazil’s Petz, you can avoid such disappointing experiences by allowing dogs to choose their favorite products. All you have to do is holding an Internet-connected camera to your dogs' faces and allowing Pet-Commerce to analyze their facial expressions as you look through the different products listed on the site. Once it detects excitement, it automatically adds the products to your shopping cart and you can finalize the deal when you’re done.
The artificial intelligence powering online platform was fed with thousands of pictures of dogs so it could better detect all the tiny details of interest expressed by dogs. “We picked through dozens of different dogs,” said dog trainer Leonardo Ogata. “The eyes staring directly at the camera, the ears pointing at the camera and the carefree and pleased attitude of not shying away from the device are all signs that the dogs enjoy the product.”
Dog owners have to hold their devices, such as computers, and smartphones over their pets’ faces so that the camera can pick up their reactions. As they look through the various products listed on Pet-Commerce, a video will start to play to attract the dogs’ attention. All videos are designed in yellow and blue, as they are the colors that dogs see best. Dogs owners are advised to turn up the volume as well, and not limit the dogs in any way, as this may annoy them.
Pet-Commerce is currently only designed to serve dogs, but Sergio Zimerman, CEO of Petz, says that an option for cats may be added in the future.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My name is Yolanda. Whenever I recall the autumn 20 years ago, my heart is filled with mixed feelings. Joyce, aged 18---just one year older but much taller than me--was my best friend, so do our parents.
“Joyce is a knock out,” Mom would say so. I would have protested if these remarks were on anyone else. But Joyce had her unique charm--the long light hair curled slightly on her temples, the large and beaming eyes; an invariable smile on her cheeks whether in the brilliance of sunshine or in the twilight of dusk--the figure was too graceful for anyone to defend.
Sure enough, that autumn witnessed her fortune take over---signing with a modeling agency, now already doing registration and runway work.
On my 17th birthday, Father gave me his refurbished (翻新的) SVT Cobra R as he promised--a gift I like most but to be wasted on me for now, as I did not come of age for a driving licence. I promised Dad I would be driving around in a year’s time.
But the urge to have a go had been scratching me.
That weekend, I proposed to drive Joyce to the movie’s downtown as my gift of congratulations on her job offer. She accepted my offer of a ride in my beloved car. I reminded her to put on the lap belt. There we went, putting some fries on the seat between us to share.
It was a purple night, and I was driving my best friend around contentedly. Turning around a curve too fast, before I knew it, I skidded along and hit the guardrail in the middle of the road. My cheekbone cracked on the steering wheel, the car came to a stop with the passenger door open just a few feet from me. There under the moonlight on the path, French fries, the dash (仪表板), and my lap. An impossible amount of blood on Joyce’s face, flaps of skin were hanging out of her eyes...
We were rushed to the hospital in separate ambulances. Later, I learned that I was to recover soon. When I asked about Joyce, my mother hesitated for a moment, then spoke quietly, “She’s all right, but the scar above her eye--best plastic surgeon in the city, but end of her modeling career.”
