Now a new list of seven wonders has been chosen from 21 locations’ shortlist for the worldwide vote by history lovers.
An original list of nearly 200 sites picked out by the public was narrowed to 21 by the organizers and experts, including the former director general of UNESCO Professor Federico Mayor. Among the 21 locations were Stonehenge (巨石阵) in Britain, Acropolis in Athens, the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Taj Mahal in India and the Great Wall in China. The only standard for the new list was that the landmarks were built or discovered before 2000.
The vote was organized by a non-profit Swiss foundation called New & Wonders specializing in the protection, rebuilding and mending of historical relics. The result was announced in Lisbon, on July 7,2007. Here is the complete list of the new seven wonders: the Great Wall of China,Petra,Chichen Itza, Christ the Redeemer, the Colosseum, Machu Picchu and the Taj Mahal.

24、I am a person who has always loved reading. For me, it is easy to get lost in a book and return to the world a couple of hours later having been on an adventure. As a 6-year-old, I could be found reading Harry Potter, a difficult book for a 6-year-old but I enjoyed it all the same. Now, as a student, it is harder to find the time to read books for pleasure; however, I relish the summers where I have the time to read to satisfy myself. Growing up, it soon became clear that spelling for me was not difficult and I had a wide vocabulary. This is because I began reading from such a young age.
My advice for you as English learners would be to read the books that you have often read in your own language in English. Reading, stories especially, is a great way of improving your vocabulary and spelling without noticing as you are lost in the story. For me, I have read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in French and am currently reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Spanish. This is a really useful way of being able to read in another language because I know the story so well in English, it is easy to follow the story in the foreign language even if I do not understand every word.
This is another important point: it is not necessary to understand every word. If you understand the meaning of the sentence, each word is not necessarily important. Sometimes it is impossible to translate directly from one language to another. Quite often, if a word is used several times in a text, you can gain your own meaning from it and it makes much more sense than if you tried to translate it in the first place.
Give it a try. If you like reading you could be opening up a whole new world of literature.
【1】What can we learn from the author’s reading experiences?

【2】Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “relish” in paragraph 1?
A.Spend.
B.Lose.

D.Hate.
【3】What suggestion does the author give for learning English?
A.Reading English stories you’re familiar with in your own language.
B.Reading Harry Potter in different languages.
C.Translating word by word.
D.Understanding the story in your own language.
【4】What can be the best title for the text?
A.Better Ways to Read stories.
B.The Benefits of Reading.
C.How to Improve Spelling and Vocabulary.
D.Is It Necessary to Know Each Word?
25、 You can actually catch a good mood or a bad mood from your friends, according to a recent study in the journal Royal Society Open Science. But that shouldn't stop you from _______ with pals who are down in the dumps, say the study authors. _______, the effect isn't large enough to push you into depression.
The new study adds to a growing body of research suggesting that happiness and sadness—as well as lifestyle and behavioral factors like smoking, drinking, obesity, fitness habits and even the ability to concentrate—can _______ across social networks, both online and in real life. But while many _______ studies have only looked at friendship data at one point in time, this is one of the few that measured social and mood changes over time.
The new research involved groups of junior-high and high-school students who took part in _______ screenings(筛查) and answered questions about their best friends, many of whom were also enrolled in the study. In total, 2,194 students were included in the _______, which used a mathematical model to look for connections among friend networks.
Overall, kids whose friends suffered from bad moods were more _______ to report bad moods themselves and they were less likely to have improved when they were screened again six months to a year later. When people had more happy friends, _______, their moods were more likely to improve over time.
Some symptoms related to depression-like helplessness, tiredness and loss of interest-also seemed to follow this _______, which scientists call “social contagion.” But this isn't something that people need to ________, says lead author Robert Eyre, a doctoral student at the University of Warwick. Rather, it's just a “________ empathetic (感同身受的) response that we're all familiar with, and something we recognize by common sense,” he says. In other words, when a friend is going through a rough period, it makes sense that you'll feel some of their ________, and it's certainly not a reason to stay away.
The study also found that having friends who were clinically depressed did not ________ participants' risk of becoming depressed themselves. “Your friends do not put you at risk of illness,” says Eyre, “so a good course of action is simply to ________ them.” To boost both of your moods, he suggests doing things together that you both ________ and taking other friends along to further spread those good feelings, too.”
