二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、A man in Indonesia is walking backwards for 435 miles (700 kilometers). He’s making the trip to encourage the government and others to protect and rebuild Indonesia’s rainforests.

Medi Bastoni is 43 years old. He is the father of four children and lives in Dono, Indonesia, That’s about 12.5 miles (20 kilometers) from Mount Wilis, a beautiful mountain area that has had large areas of forests cut down in the past.

Indonesia is the largest country in the world formed by a group of islands. There are over 16, 000 islands in Indonesia, and most of them are covered with rainforests. Forests cover about 70% of the country. But on Java, where Mr Bastoni lives, there are more people, and far more forests have been cleared.

Some areas of Indonesia’s rainforests have been cut or burned. Mr Bastoni believes it’s important to protect- forests from being cut down and to restore them when they have been destroyed. Near his home, Mount Wilis is now being restored, but Mr Bastoni wants to make sure that this protection continues.

That’s why he came up with the idea of the 435-mile walk. He aims to walk from his home in Dono, across most of the island of Java to the country’s capital, Jakarta. There, he hopes to meet the country’s president, Joko Widodo.

Mr Bastoni hopes to arrive in Jakarta on August 17. It is the country’s independence day celebration. If he is able to meet Mr Widodo, he plans to ask him for the seed of a tree to plant at the bottom of Mount Wilis. The seed is meant as a symbol and a promise that the area will be protected.

And walking backwards is a symbol, too. Mr Bastoni wants Indonesians to look back at their past and think about how they got their independence.

But walking backwards is also a good way to get attention. Right now, Mr Bastoni’s backwards walk is pretty big news in Indonesia.

22、More reasons to hate humidity: it expands global warming, a prof says.

Andrew Dessler, a professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences who specializes in research on climate, says that warming due to increases in greenhouse gases will lead to higher humidity in the atmosphere. And because water vapor itself is a greenhouse gas, this will cause additional warming. This process is known as water vapor feedback and is responsible for a significant portion of the warming predicted to occur over the next century.

“It’s a vicious cycle-warmer temperatures mean higher humidity, which in turn leads to even more warming,” Dessler explains.

The perspective by Dessler and co-author Steven Sherwood of the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New South Wales is published in the current issue of Science magazine. In the article, they review and summarize the peer-reviewed evidence in support of a strong water vapor feedback and conclude that the evidence supporting it is overwhelming. “For years, there was a debate over this mechanism, with some even questioning if the water vapor feedback existed at all. But recent work on this feedback has moved its existence and strength beyond argument,” Dessler adds.

Predictions of significant global warming over the next 100 years by climate models require a strong water vapor feedback. Recent estimates suggest the earth will warm from 2 to 4 degrees Celsius (4 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit) over the next century—a scenario that could have devastating long-term consequences.

“Everything shows that the climate models are probably getting the water vapor feedback night, which means that unless we reduce emissions, it is going to get much, much warmer on our planet by the end of the century,” he adds.

Many scientists believe such warming rates are already happening. They can point to the summer of 2003, when a prolonged heat wave gripped Europe. According to the Earth Policy Institute, more than 35,000 people died that summer, with France recording over 14,000 deaths and Germany more than 7,000. Additionally, warmer temperatures are having an adverse effect in the Arctic, where rapid loss of ice is now occurring. “The only possible way future warming won’t be significant is if there exists some sort of off-setting negative feedback, which has yet to be discovered,” Dessler notes. “Most scientists, myself included, judge that to be a pretty unlikely possibility.”

【1】What does water vapor feedback in the passage mean?

A.Water vapor will lend to a significant portion of the warming.

B.The increases of greenhouse gases will lead to higher humidity.

C.Increasing humidity from global warming is making the earth warmer.

D.Higher humidity has caused the earth to warm from 2 to 4 degrees Celsius.

【2】What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A.Scientists had a heated argument over the water vapor feedback.

B.The existence and strength of water vapor feedback is without question.

C.Andrew Dessler wrote an article to support his idea of water vapor feedback.

D.There was no significant evidence for the existence of water vapor feedback.

【3】What do predictions of significant global warming tell us?

A.Scientists could find the offsetting negative feedback in the future.

B.There exists some sort offsetting negative water vapor feedback.

C.The warming of the earth will have destructive short-term consequences.

D.We may decrease the speed of global warming by reducing the emissions.

【4】What’s the attitude of Andrew Dessler towards the way of solving future warming?

A.Positive.

B.Supportive.

C.Neutral.

D.Pessimistic.

23、Protein shakes (蛋白质奶昔) can help you lose weight, get lean, and build strength and endurance. But can protein shakes help you gain weight too?

“If you’re looking to gain weight and bulk up, but struggling to do so through your diet alone, protein powders could be the solution,” says Alice Williams, a qualified nutrition coach at OriGym Centre of Excellence. “To gain weight, you need to be in a calorie surplus, meaning you’re expected to consume more calories than you burn. Eating high-calorie junk food such as ice cream, pizza, and burgers will certainly make you gain weight. But these foods lack nutrients, including protein, and will make you gain fat rather than muscle. Instead, protein powders are a quick, easy and effective way to let you take in more calories in a healthier way.”

If you are using protein shakes to gain weight, it’s important to do it safely and in the healthiest way. Too much protein in your diet for an extended period can result in nutritional deficiencies (营养不良) and can worsen existing kidney problems.

It’s important to bear in mind that if you are using protein shakes because you’re underweight, or you simply want to be strong, it’s important to do it in a healthy way. While protein shakes can help you put on weight, it’s still important to eat a variety of different foods as well. According to the FDA, supplements such as protein shakes should not completely replace meals, which are necessary for a healthy diet.

There are a variety of protein powders on the market. “Many brands create protein powder ‘blends’ or ‘mass gainers’ specifically targeted at weight gain. These blends contain a higher calorie by combining protein with food ingredients, such as oats, cereals, and potato, or sources of healthy fats, such as flaxseeds and avocados,“ says Williams.

“Powders which contain high levels of amino acids are beneficial to weight gain because these quickly get into the bloodstream and promote muscle growth and recovery,” adds Williams. “You should also try to avoid pre-made shakes as these often contain extra levels of sugar, and other additives that will not be beneficial to you or your training.”

【1】What does Alice Williams want to say in the second paragraph?

A.Taking in more protein makes us healthier.

B.Our diet alone may not give us enough nutrition.

C.Protein powders have advantages in gaining weight.

D.Eating junk food is the fastest way to gain weight.

【2】According to the FDA, what should we avoid doing?

A.Depending on protein shakes to gain weight completely.

B.Using supplements after a complete meal immediately.

C.Eating some high-calorie foods for weight gain.

D.Paying too much attention to our weight.

【3】Why does Alice Williams suggest getting rid of pre-made shakes?

A.They usually contain unhealthy elements.

B.They slow muscle growth and recovery.

C.They perform poorly in weight gain.

D.They are often overly advertised.

【4】What would be the best title for the text?

A.Using protein shakes to help gain weight

B.Having a healthy diet while gaining weight

C.Having a healthier diet through protein powders

D.Learning about protein shakes for better health

24、There are positive effects of having deep conversations with strangers.

“Connecting with others in meaningful ways tends to make people happier, and yet people also seem unwilling to engage in deeper conversations, said Nicholas Epley, a professor of behavioral science at the University of Chicago. “This struck us as an interesting social paradox: If connecting with others in deep and meaningful ways increases well-being, then why aren’t people doing it more often in daily life?”

To answer that question, Epley and his colleagues designed several experiments, where pairs of people-mainly strangers-were asked to discuss either relatively deep or shallow topics. Before the conversations, participants predicted how awkward they thought the conversations would be, how connected they thought they would feel to their conversation partner and how much they would enjoy the conversation. Afterward, they rated their predictions on actual basis. Generally, the researchers found that deep conversations felt less awkward and led to greater feelings of connectedness and enjoyment than the participants had expected.

If deep connection is better, then why aren’t people actually having more of them? The researchers suspected it might be because people underestimate how interested strangers are in learning about their deeper thoughts and feelings. In some of the experiments, the researchers asked participants to predict how interested their conversation partner would be in the discussion, and then afterward to indicate how interested their partner actually was in the discussion. On average, people consistently underestimated how interested their partners would be in learning about them.

“People seemed to imagine that revealing something meaningful about themselves in conversation would be met with blank stares and silence, only to find this wasn’t true in the actual conversation,” Epley said. “Human beings are deeply social and tend to reciprocate in conversation. If you share something important, you are likely to get something important exchanged in return, leading to a considerably better conversation.”

These findings are published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
