21、I am Peter Hodes, a volunteer stem cell courier. Since March 2012, I’ve done 89 trips -— of those, 51 have been abroad, I have 42 hours to carry stem cells (干细胞) in my little box because I’ve got two ice packs and that’s how long they last. In all, from the time the stem cells are harvested from a donor to the time they can be implanted in the patient, we’ve got 72 hours at most. So I am always conscious of time.
I had one trip last year where I was caught by a hurricane in America. I picked up the stem cells in Providence, Rhode Island, and was meant to fly to Washington then back to London. But when I arrived at the check-in desk at Providence, the lady on the desk said: “Well, I’m really sorry, I’ve got some bad news for you — there are no flights from Washington.” So I took my box and put it on the desk and I said: “In this box are some stem cells that are urgently needed for a patient — please, please, you’ve got to get me back to the United Kingdom.” She just dropped everything. She arranged for a flight on a small plane to be held for me, re-routed (改道) me through Newark and got me back to the UK even earlier than originally scheduled.
For this courier job, you’re consciously aware that in that box you’ve got something that is potentially going to save somebody’s life.

22、 I decided to go back to school in the fall of 2008 after not being happy with my current job and financial status. I obtained my Associate Degree in May 2002 in Commercial Arts. After graduation, I had trouble obtaining a job in that field. For years, I was going from one job to another feeling unfilled, and I was not satisfied with the instability.
I decided to go back to school for either International Business or Psychology. I weighed the pros and cons of both professions and Psychology won. I like helping my friends and family, when they go through hard situations in their life by giving them sound advice and being honest with them. Also, I was interested in “the mind”.
I was searching for online schools because my work schedule at my current job would not allow me to attend a regular class. I was nervous about starting online classes because I heard mixed stories from other friends who were taking online classes. I decided to do it anyway to experience something different. I wanted to find an online school that was affordable and reputable. Through my search, I discovered Walden University, which is specially for working adults who want to obtain a bachelor’s degree or higher. The process of getting accepted was easy, which included writing an essay on why I wanted to attend their school, transferring my previous credits, etc.
I am currently enrolled in the Bachelors program for psychology, and I am paying for college via financial-aid loans and grants. This experience has been interesting yet trying as sometimes it was difficult to balance work, school and home life. I learned a lot about psychology and myself. For example, I like writing about current events, relationships and traveling. I thought my English composition was ordinary, but after taking a few classes at Walden University, I improved my English composition and it made me feel confident enough to start writing professionally so I became a freelance (自由撰稿) writer. Currently, I am only three classes away from obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology! It was one of the best decisions I made in my life.

23、 From my hotel room window, I see an oversized billboard with his face on it: Jason, the Great Magician.
I absent-mindedly turn the pages of the phone book and come across a city map. Sipping my iced latté, I run my fingers along the streets from the hotel to the opera hall. Not more than a half-hour walk.
I glance at the clock. The show starts in one hour. Plenty of time! I gulp the last three sips of my latté and hop in the shower. Soon I’m on my way to the show, carrying a fancy black handbag and a genuine smile.
The billboard looks even more impressive from outside. The Great Jason's eyes seem to be glancing through me. I shiver and walk faster. I feel like a child about to open her birthday presents.
The hall is dark when I come in; the show is about to begin. I make my way backstage just as the great magician puts on his top hat.
'Daddy, I'm so glad to see you, ' I say in a half-whisper. 'I'm in town for the writer’s workshop, but I just couldn't miss your show. ' I give him a quick hug and go back into the seating area, leaving him with a startled smile. I settle down in the darkness, and the curtains open.
Magically, that show remains the Great Jason's best performance to this day.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Anna thought she finally knew what life was all about, it dealt her a heavy blow. Her husband passed away suddenly. They had been making plans to get away on a dream trip to France. Now it was too late, and Anna wept over all the memories they wouldn’t be sharing. She was heartbroken.
“I’m so worried about Mom,” Anna’s daughter Clara said to her son, Ron, one day. “It’s been over six months, and she’s still sad. She won’t leave the house, not for anything.”
Ron, a fourteen-year-old boy who had been close to his grandparents, was upset. “Poor grandma!” he sighed. He knew his grandpa was her world. Ron wondered how he could cheer his grandma up. “What if I start taking her out in the afternoon for walks the way she and Grandpa used to do?” he asked. “That’s a great idea, Ron!” his mother said.
So the next day, Ron showed up at his grandma’s house an hour before sunset. “Hey, grandma,” he said. “How about walking down to the lake and watching the sunset?” Anna turned her face away so her grandson couldn’t see her tears and said. “Why would I want to do a stupid thing like that? Don’t bother me!”
Ron was hurt by his grandmother’s words, but what he didn’t know was that Anna was just as upset. “Why did I say that to the poor boy?” she asked herself. “He was only trying to help.”
That night Ron told his mom what had happened. “Maybe she doesn’t want our help,” he said sadly. Clara replied, “She definitely needs it. Your grandpa would hope she could continue to love life. He once always brought her red roses and she loved them very much!”
That was when a brilliant idea struck Ron. He decided to buy his grandma roses like his grandpa used to do. Maybe the daily reminder that she was loved would turn things around. But first, he needed to earn money to buy roses, which weren’t cheap. Ron decided that he wasn’t going to say a word to his mom. He was going to do this for his grandmother, all by himself.
