二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、It was supposed to be a normal trip to the supermarket. My son was little, and it was getting close to nap time, so I was rushing. But when I went to start the car, I realized that I must have locked my keys in the trunk with my bag.

So I took my son and went back inside the store. I had to use their phone to call my husband for the spare key. After many calls and messages with no answer. I was getting upset. My son was tired and getting fussy. I was exhausted from a sleepless night that all moms go through when their kids are teething. When he went into full-on crying, I felt tears come down my face, too.

An employee at the store tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to come with her. I was fearful for a moment, thinking I was going to be scolded and thrown into the storage area to keep us quiet. The employee, whose name was Kelly, took me, to my surprise, to the Starbucks cafe inside the store. She bought me a coffee and settled down with us. As we talked, my son settled into a sound sleep. After about fifteen minutes, she said her break was over and if I couldn’t contact my husband, they would get the trunk open.

After I got home that day, I kept thinking about what Kelly had done for me and wanted to do something. So, Kelly from the Safeway in Delaware, these are the things that you have done because I was thinking of your kindness as I did them: bolding doors for people, letting someone ahead of me in line, hitting “yes” on the donation button at the checkout, and many others.

I am so glad I locked my keys in the car that day. Who would have thought a cup of coffee could have so much of an effect on a person?

22、Middle English (ME) was the prime and traditional spoken language form in many parts of England during the Middle Ages. Though most language historians suggest that before 1000 CE, the primary language in England was Anglo-Saxon, the Norman invasion (入侵) of England had a significant effect on Anglo-Saxon. It gradually changed the language into Middle English, a form almost recognizable, at least in text, as far more relative to modem spoken and written English.

History can have a great effect on language. For England, the Norman invasion changed English forever. In the courts (法庭) and in much of the writing of the time, French was definitely preferable, accounting for the numerous French-based words (over 10,000) that are now the common every day words of today’s English. Most documents dated after 1000 were written in either French or Latin, and Middle English drew from both, while still keeping some of its Anglo-Saxon roots. This in part accounts for the significant “exceptions” in English grammar, spelling, structure and pronunciation that can make English such a challenging language to learn, especially for those picking it up as a second language.

As French influence disappeared gradually, a number of writers from the 12th and 13th century decided to write in the native language, rather than in French and Latin. This tradition spread, and the 14th century produced probably the most important English writer, Geoffrey Chaucer, the author of The Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde.

You can observe many differences between Middle English and modem form. Many of these are slight spelling differences, and many others have to do with pronunciation of the language. The main pronunciation changes from Middle to Early Modern English is the typical French pronunciation of most vowels (元音).

【1】What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A.Anglo-Saxon.

B.Middle English.

C.The primary English.

D.The Norman invasion.

【2】What is the main idea of Paragraph2?

A.Norman invasion has a great influence on English.

B.Anglo-Saxon roots make English difficult to learn.

C.There are a number of French-based words in English.

D.French and Latin were the official languages in England.

【3】How does the author develop the text?

A.By following the time order.

B.By listing numbers.

C.By giving examples.

D.By making comparisons.

【4】What will the author talk about following the last sentence?

A.The typical vowels’ pronunciation in French.

B.The typical vowels’ pronunciation in Modern English.

C.Differences between Middle English and Early Modern English.

D.Examples about changes of vowel pronunciation from Middle to Modern English.

23、“Stealth applicant ”is the term colleges and universities use for a student whose first communication with a school is an admissions application. Essentially, these students haven't shown any interest in the school via webinars (在线研讨会),virtual tours or visits.

An increase in these out-of-the-blue applicants has thrown off schools’ ability to accurately predict the number of applications they will receive and has caused some schools to adjust their traditional admissions practices.

Think about it: If you were an admissions officer and had two students whose statistics were similar you'd select the one who had demonstrated more interest because there seemed to be a greater likelihood that they would choose to attend your school.

Colleges often purposely track students’ interest to help predict the number of applications the admissions office will receive. Every box that gets checked helps colleges estimate students' “demonstrated interest” , which the school uses as a predictor of how many students, if admitted, will actually enroll.

Here are some suggestions of ways to show interest:

Follow each of your colleges on social media.

Respond to their e-mails if given the opportunity.

Visit the college. Investing the time to visit the campus shows that you are serious. While there, take a tour, talk with students and arrange to sit in on a class, if possible.

If you can't get to the school, arrange to visit with the college admissions staff at a local or national college fair.

Make sure that when you respond to the “Why this college?”essay, you answer thoughtfully and with specifics.

Once you've sent in your application, check back with the admissions office to make sure they have everything they need and that your application is complete.

【1】Why are some students called “stealth applicants”?

A.Because they sent their applications for the first time.

B.Because they did nothing but sending their applications.

C.Because they sent their applications through the Internet.

D.Because they showed no interest in sending their applications.

【2】What does the underlined phrase “thrown off” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

A.lost.

B.practised.

C.held.

D.challenged.

【3】According to the passage, who will be preferred during the admission process?

A.Applicants with more hobbies.

B.Applicants with similar statistics.

C.Applicants who show more affection.

D.Applicants who demonstrate little interest.

【4】Which of the following is NOT suggested?

A.Taking a visit to the college.

B.Keeping a close watch on the college.

C.Being more active on the social media.

D.Making a good preparation for the interview.

24、Reading minds may not be simple, but it might be possible actually. What if a brain scan could reveal your memories? A team of British scientists recently just did that—they used brain scans to look at spatial (空间的) memory in four people. Spatial memory is the kind of memory you use to remember where you are. You use spatial memory to remember how to get from your house to school. People build spatial memory as they explore a new city or a new building and take in information about their surroundings.

The scientists asked each participant to sit down at a computer and wander through 3D rooms. These virtual rooms contained images of objects, like clocks and doors, so that the people could know where they were. Each person was encouraged to explore the virtual space.

As the people became familiar with these rooms, their brains were taking notes of where things were, and how to get from one point to another. After observing these rooms, the participants were instructed to go to a specific location within the rooms. At this point, the scientists took pictures of the people's brains using an instrument called FMRI (核磁共振成像) .

As participants stared at the floor, the scientists took FMRI scans to measure brain activity. They repeated this process many times. After a few repetitions, the scientists recognized the patterns in the participants' brains. By looking at patterns on the brain scans, the scientists were able to read the spatial memory of the test subjects.

This experiment shows that it is possible to use FMRI to gather some kinds of memories from people. However, your secret thoughts and personal memories are safe—for now. “It is not the case that we can put someone in a brain scanner and simply read his private thoughts,” said one of the scientists who worked on the project.

【1】What can we learn about spatial memory from the first paragraph?

A.It contributes to exploring a new subject.

B.It lets you remember what has been done.

C.It helps you memorize places where you are.

D.It takes in information about new knowledge.

【2】Which of the following is the right order of the study?

a. The scientists took photos of the brains with the FMRI.

b. The scientists read the spatial memory of the participants.

c. The participants were asked to explore virtual rooms.

d. The scientists repeated the process a few times.

A.a, b, c, d

B.c, a, d, b

C.b, c, d, a

D.c, d, a, b

【3】Why are our secret mind and private memories safe?

A.Because FMRIs can’t gather any memory from people.

B.Because scientists can't understand all pictures taken by FMRIs.

C.Because FMRIs can't be completely reliable now.

D.Because scientists can't read people's thoughts directly.

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Spatial memory and FMRIs.

B.A very important research.

C.How scientists can read people's memories.

D.A new kind of camera—FMRIs.
