21、Growing old does not increase your immediate danger of dying — at least, if you are a fruit fly. The chances of a Mediterranean fruit fly dying out on a particular day reaches a peak (顶峰) and then declines, according to James Carey of the University of California and Davis and James Vaupel of Duke University. Their results disagree with the general idea that the death rate rises with age in all species.
The research will cause a long-running debate over whether or not there is a genetically defined limit (遗传上的极限) to an individual’s lifespan (寿命). If there is not and the fruit fly results extend to humans, then medical advances might eventually allow the elderly to live forever.
In the early 19th century, the British scientist Benjamin Gompertz formed a law stating that death rates increase with age. For an adult human the immediate chance of death seems to double every eight years. The Gompertz law was believed to hold for all species and to put an age limit on each species.
To test this theory, Carey and Vaupel studied more than a million fruit flies. They found that the death rate reached a maximum of about fifteen per cent when the flies were between 40 and 60 days old, and then fell. Flies that survived to 100 days had only a 4 to 6 per cent chance of dying on a given day. In other words, the chances of dying seem not to increase sharply in advanced age, as predicted by the Gompertz law; rather, they seem to level off.
If Gompertz law does not hold for human beings either, then there may be no genetically defined limit on a person’s lifespan.

A.The habits of fruit flies.
B.The possible limit to a person’s lifespan.
C.The secret of long life.

D.a human is more likely to die as he gets older
【3】According to the research made on the fruit flies, _____.
A.the Gompertz law does not hold for human beings
B.the death rate does not necessarily increase with age
C.the fruit flies will never die after surviving a death rate peak
D.nearly half of the fruit flies die at half of their longest lifespan
【4】What can be concluded from the passage?
A.It is difficult to put an age limit on each species.
B.There will be far more new species on the earth.
C.The death rate of human beings will certainly drop with age.
D.People will never suffer from diseases with medical advances.

23、 Everyone knows about New Year’s Eve and Independence Day. But did you know that there are enough holidays to fill every day of the year? Here are just a few we found interesting.
World Hello Day
To celebrate this day, say hello to at least ten different people. World Hello Day began in the autumn of 1973, shortly after the end of a war in the Middle East. Brian and Michael McCormack of Omaha, Nebraska, wondered what they could do to encourage world peace. They felt the best way was by getting people to talk with one another.
The McCormacks sent letters to the leaders of every country in the world about the first World Hello Day. They wrote the letters in as many different languages as they could. Officials wrote back from sixteen countries and encouraged Brian and Michael to make World Hello Day a yearly event. The holiday has been held on the third Sunday of November every year since. The McCormacks have received letters from many famous people congratulating them for their efforts.
International Day of the Seal (海豹)
March 22 is the official International Day of the Seal. But the National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C., and many other zoos and research centers around the world celebrate this holiday on the third weekend of March. The holiday was created to tell people about the dangers seals face from pollution and fishing nets.
At the National Zoological Park, you can find out how seals live and ways to help protect their habitats (栖息地).
Do it! Day
Are you a procrastinator? Here’s a day to finish all those things you’ve been meaning to do. Do It! Day is celebrated on the first Wednesday in September. “The whole idea is to feel good about getting things done,” says the founder of Do It! Day, Ethel Cook. 24、After seemingly endless waiting, news finally reached President Abraham Lincoln. The North had won at Gettysburg. The citizens of Pennsylvania created a national cemetery(公墓)for the soldiers who lay dead at Gettysburg. A ceremony was planned. Lincoln received an invitation to attend. He was not asked to give the major speech of the day. That honor was given to a New England statesman and professional speaker named Edward Everett. The president was asked instead to say “a few words”.
As the day approached, Lincoln’s wife asked him to reconsider. Their son, Tad, had fallen ill. Mary Lincoln was near crazy. On the morning of the day, Tad was so sick that he could not eat. Lincoln felt unwell himself, but he decided to go anyway.
On Thursday, November 19, for two hours, Everett held the audience spellbound with his rich voice and inspiring words. Then Lincoln rose to speak. “Four score and seven years ago,” he began in his high pitched(声调高的)voice. He spoke for barely three minutes.
As Lincoln sat down, some eyewitnesses recalled little applause(掌声). Others heard “not a word, not a cheer, not a shout”. A person taking notes asked Lincoln, “Is that all?” Embarrassed, Lincoln replied, “Yes--for the present.” A photographer in the crowd had not even had time to take a picture.
Lincoln thought his speech was a failure. Some newspapers considered it as “silly” and “boring”. But Everett correctly predicted that the Gettysburg Address would “live among the history of man”. A few days after both of them had spoken at Gettysburg, he wrote to Lincoln, saying that he wished he had come “as close to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes”. Lincoln replied, telling Everett how pleased he was that “the little I did say was not entirely a failure.”
Indeed it was not. It gave the North new hope and purpose as to why it was fighting the war. Today, Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is remembered as one of the greatest speeches of all time.

A.Lincoln was asked to give a mini speech.

A.To show the disappointment of the audience.
B.To show the greatness of Lincoln’s speech.
C.To laugh at Lincoln for his unsuccessful speech.
D.To tell us that Lincoln was very sad about his speech.
【3】What did Everett intend to express about Lincoln’s speech in the 5th paragraph?
A.Sympathy.
B.Criticism.
C.Appreciation.

【4】Why did Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address become famous?
A.Because it was distinctively well constructed.
