二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.

Later at eleven, I decided to learn to swim. There was a pool at the Y. M. C. A. offering exactly the opportunity. Although my mother continually warned against it, and kept fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river, I knew the Y. M. C. A. pool was safe.

The pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on the side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, “Hi, Skinny! How'd you like to be ducked?” With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end. I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my wisdom- when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump and come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down, endlessly.

When I came to consciousness, I found myself lying on the bed in the hospital. I never went back to the pool. I avoided water whenever I could. This misadventure stayed with me as the years rolled by. It rid me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instructor was finished, but he knew I was not. Sometimes the terror would return.

This went on until July. I swam across the Lake Wentworth. Only once did the terror return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me?” I had conquered my fear of water.

22、We believe that educating the “whole student” opens the door to the “whole world”. Our rich and dynamic co-curricular program enables each student to experience an exceptional array of activities, carefully designed to provide just the right level of challenge, engagement and fun. Our exceptional co-curricular program is delivered by dedicated teachers and staff members or by experts from the wider community. As a result, each student is encouraged to pursue his or her passions and talents. Co-curriculars also provide a valuable opportunity for our students to develop flexibility and perseverance by challenging them to step outside their comfort zone and try something new:

Kindergarten: Beginnings

Our youngest students learn about themselves and their important place in our school community by engaging in activities that introduce them to the wonders of the natural world and that develop their motor skills.

Junior School (Grades 1~5): Discovery

Co-curriculars in junior school are designed to enable our students to discover new talents and interests while developing their existing skills. Student agency and confidence are nurtured through the program, with an emphasis on participation and fun as well as on skill development.

Middle School (Grades 6~8): Exploration

The Middle Years are the perfect time for students to explore a wide variety of co-curricular activities. At a stage when many young people experience a lack of self-confidence, co-curriculars in our middle school are designed to challenge, to engage and to celebrate the unique qualities that each student brings to the school community.

Senior School (Grades 9~12): Focus

In our senior school, students are encouraged to refine their interests and to specialize in certain areas. The co-curricular program at this level allows them to develop mastery and to focus on specific activities of choice.

23、Two recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behavior.

One showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. Researchers at Harvard University in the United States and the Stockholm School of Economics in Sweden did the study.

They had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the Prisoner’s Dilemma. The game is based on the tension between the interests of an individual and a group. The students played in groups of four. Each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. But each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players. Harvard researcher David Rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation. The groups that rewarded the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded the least. And the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings. The study appeared last month in the journal Science.

The other study involved children. It was presented last month in California at a conference on violence and abuse(虐待). Researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. More than eight hundred children were aged two to four the first time they were tested. More than seven hundred children were aged five to nine. The two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results with the first test. Both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not.

The study says the IQs of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. In the older group, the difference was almost three points. The more they are spanked, the slower their mental development.

1Which of the following is TRUE according to the second study?

A. Children’s IQs have much to do with physical punishment.

B. The study is about violence and cooperation of children.

C. The children tested were divided into groups of four.

D. Children’s mental development only relies on their IQs.

2What does the underlined word “spanked” refer to?

A. punished   B. blamed

C. tested   D. praised

3What might be the best title for the text?

A. The Best Way to Correct Misbehavior

B. Punishment Is the Best Way of Education

C. Cooperation Is the Most Successful Behavior

D. Punishment or Reward: Which Works Better on Behavior?

24、   Howard Carter is one of the most famous explorers the world has ever known. He didn’t go to school, but he was bright and curious about the world outside his home town. In 1891, at the age of 17, he set sail for Alexandria, Egypt. By the 1920s, he had become an explorer, searching for the tombs of the Egyptian kings. Inside the tombs, he discovered a great fortune in jewels and gold, along with the preserved bodies of dead kings. In 1922, Howard Carter made his most amazing discovery of all, in the Valley of the Kings, in Egypt. There they came across the tomb of King Tutankhamun. It was the most important tomb that had ever been found. “The tomb contained more treasure than any of us had ever seen before, as well as the mummy of the king,” said Carter.

However, not long after the discovery, people in Carter’s team fell ill and died. Upon their entering the tomb, Carter’s lucky pet bird was swallowed by a snake. Lord Carnarvon, who was also present when the tomb was opened, fell ill with a fever and died in Egypt. George Gould, a friend of Carnarvon’s, went to Egypt after hearing of his strange death. He too visited the tomb, only to catch a high fever the next day. Twelve hours later, he was dead.

Within 7 years, 21 people who had something to do with the opening the tomb died. Howard Carter, however, lived on until the age of 65. There are different explanations for the deaths. A scientific explanation is that inside the tombs there are many viruses, which can result in illness or even death. Today when scientists examine mummies, they wear special clothing for protection.

C.The mummies in the tombs. D.Several tombs in Egypt.

3All of the following died after the tomb had been opened except ________.

A.Lord Carnarvon B.Howard Carter

C.the pet bird D.George Gould

4From the text we can infer that ________.

A.Howard Carter knew how to protect himself in the tomb.

B.the people who entered the tomb were punished by the mummy.

C.the deaths of those related to the opening of the tomb were just coincidence.

D.scientists are still trying to work out the mystery of the tomb.
