二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Scientists have made an amazing discovery: large quantities of species of frog and salamander (火蜥蜴) glow under certain types of light.

Jennifer Lamb and Matthew Davis, at St Cloud State University in Minnesota, in the US, studied 32 different species of amphibians(两栖动物), mostly frogs and salamanders. Lamb and Davis shone blue torchlight on a frog that they were studying and were surprised to see it glow green. They wondered how many others would do the same, so they went to an aquarium(水族馆) in Chicago, US, and shone lights on all the amphibians.

They found that most of the animals lit up green, an effect that showed more clearly when seen through a yellow filter(指示灯). The team say their results have surprised them and they don’t yet know why the amphibians glow like this, but plan to do more research. This glow-in-the-dark ability is known as biofluorescence(生物荧光), and many animals, such as chameleons(变色龙), jellyfish (水母), sharks and sea turtles, can do it. Scorpions (蝎子) glow a bright blue under ultraviolet light (a type of light that causes sunburn).

Biofluorescence is caused by substances(物质) in the body that can absorb one colour of light and then give it out as a different colour. Usually animals absorb blue light and give off green, red or orange light. The bright green might warn off predators(捕食性动物) or help animals like the amphibians signal to each other, or it might even identify individuals, a bit like a call or smell that others can recognise.

“There is still a lot out there that we don’t know, ” Lamb told The New York Times newspaper. “This opens up a whole window into the possibility that organisms can see fluorescence(荧光) – their world may look a lot different from ours.”

22、Give a little sunshine!

The Council on Aging (COA) runs a telephone friendship project called the Sunshine Call Program, matching over-60s with a friendly volunteer for a daily chat over the phone. The aim is simple-to help ease the loneliness and repair social networks.

Sheila, 77, a retired teacher, lived alone. She has been receiving calls from Rianne, a volunteer, for over two months.

“Talking to Rianne is something I really look forward to—a breath of fresh air. We talk about everything—theatre, her work, books we’ve read…Listening to someone else’s life enriches you and gives you something positive to focus on.”

“At the beginning, I had no expectation of how the phone calls would go, but it’s wonderful that it’s led to a genuine friendship. Rianne helps me a lot …”

Are you ready to add a little sunshine to a senior’s life?

The Sunshine Call Program initially links a volunteer with an isolated (独居的) senior for a daily call. When comfortable, the volunteer introduces a second senior to the call. Then another, until there are four seniors to one volunteer on what is essentially a conference call. Without having to leave the house, you will help the seniors meet and make new friends. They will then exchange phone numbers to chat on their own and reduce their isolation.

What are the volunteer qualifications?

Volunteers must have access to the Internet and be willing to be trained on the use of a chat app. COA will provide all supplies required to make the calls. Besides, volunteers must agree to participate in monthly meetings with other volunteers and guest speakers. All volunteers must be willing to provide a recent Criminal Record Check, the cost of which will be borne by COA. And the most important volunteer qualification is a sense of caring and a desire to help seniors in the community!

If you wish to volunteer with our Sunshine Call program, never hesitate! Just CLICK HERE to fill out the application form.

23、Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table, reading his book. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to copy him in every way he could.

One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa, I try to read the book just like you, but I don’t understand it, and I forget what I understand as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the book do?”

The grandpa quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandpa laughed and said, “You’ll have to move a little faster next time,” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. 24、   Dame Zaha Hadid, the Iraqi-born British architect whose tall structures left a mark on skylines and imaginations around the world and in the process reshaped architecture for the modern age.

She was not an average designer. She liberated architectural geometry( 几何), giving it a whole new expressive identity. Geometry became, in her hands, a vehicle for unprecedented and eye-popping new spaces. Her buildings elevated uncertainty to an art, conveyed in the odd ways.

Her work implying mobility, speed, freedom and uncertainty spoke to a worldview widely shared by a younger generation. “I am not European, I don’t do conventional work and I am a woman,’’ Strikingly Ms. Hadid never allowed herself on her work to be categorized by her background or her gender. And she was one of a kind, a path breaker. In 2004, she became the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s Nobel.

Zaha Hadid was born in Baghdad on October 31, 1950. Then in 1972, she arrived at the architectural association in London, a center for experimental design. Her teachers included Elia Zenghelis and Rem Koolhaas. “They aroused my ambition,” she would recall, “and taught me to trust even my strangest instincts.” By the 1980s she had established her own practice in London. And she began to draw attention with an unrealized plan in 1982—1983 for the Peak Club.

Her partner, Patrick Schumacher, played an instrumental and collaborative role in her career. Mr. Schumacher coined the term parametric(参数的) design to include the computer-based approach that helped the firm’s most weird concepts become reality. Ms. Hadid called what resulted in an organic language of architecture, based on these new tools, which allow us to combine highly complex forms into a fluid(流线的) and complete whole.

Her sources were nature, history or whatever she sought useful. When her Rosenthal Center, a relatively modest project, opened in 2003, Herbert Muschamp, the architecture critic declared it “the most important American building to be completed since the end of the cold war”.

“She was bigger than life, a force of nature,” as Amale Andraos, the dean of Columbia University’s architecture school, put it, “she was a pioneer.”

She was. For women, for what cities can desire to build and for the art of architecture.

1What features the structures designed by Zaha Hadid?

A.Free architectural geometry. B.Conventional design.

C.Odd imagination. D.Colorful patterns.

2According to Paragraphs 3 and 4, which of the following statement is TRUE?

A.Zaha Hadid taught herself to trust instincts.

B.The plan for the Peak Club hasn’t been carried out.

C.The architect’s gender influenced her work dramatically.

D.Zaha Hadid was the first architect to win the Pritzker Prize.

3How did the computer-based approach make a difference to Zaha Hadid’s work?

A.It contributes to realizing the strange ideas.

B.It simplifies the complex structure as a whole.

C.It provides new tools to translate the language.

D.It serves as an instrument to interpret the concepts.

4The purpose of the passage is to____.

A.present Zaha Hadid’s life experience

B.praise Zaha Hadid’s inspiration and diligence

C.compare Zaha Hadid’s works in different times

D.show Zaha Hadid’s great contributions to architecture

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Little Andy was a 10-year-old kid. He had a younger brother named Johnny. Andy was the elder one, but unfortunately he was the troublemaker rather than his brother Johnny. Besides, he often put Johnny in trouble in front of their parents by lying to them so as not to carry responsibility for his actions. However, they trusted Johnny and believed him more than they believed Andy because they knew the two kids well.

Andy tried to make friends in school, but they quickly discovered how he was used to lying and how he loved to play tricks on others. Moreover, Andy always put others in trouble, which was really annoying to them. As a result, people around him stopped believing him and gradually stayed out of his way.

One day, when their parents were out of the house, Andy and Johnny were watching TV. After a while, Andy found Johnny asleep on the sofa. So Andy went to the kitchen and wanted to play a trick on Johnny. He used flour to make some easy bombs and hung them on the door trim line so that when Johnny went to the kitchen and tried to open the door the bombs would fall on him. Then Andy went to the bathroom quietly to color the soap with paints so that if Johnny washed his hands, his hands would be colored. Suddenly, their parents came back and they found that Johnny was sleeping. Their father was going to the kitchen to wash his hands, and their mother was going to the kitchen to prepare food for them. Andy tried to stop them but failed. Soon Johnny was awakened by screams. He looked at his parents and didn't know what had taken place. Their parents both had colored hands and came out of the kitchen covered with flour.

Paragraph 1:

They were extremely angry and asked who did that.
