二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Venice is suffering the worst flooding the city has experienced in 50 years. The city is “on its knees” and Venetian Mayor Luigi Brugnaro tweeted as water submerged (淹没) much of the famous historical city.

While floods are a normal part of life in Venice, they have never happened with such frequency before. Experts say that climate change is likely to blame. 【1】 The Venetian council voted against a measure to fight climate change just a few moments before their conference hall flooded.

Flooding is just one of the many impacts from climate change that globally threatens many vulnerable (脆弱的) areas and regions. There is a threat that is not often considered. 【2】 Natural and man-made heritage sites throughout the world are in danger of being damaged or destroyed by climate change.

【3】 Some will be hit by flooding, like Venice, others by extreme weather events or rising temperatures. For instance, George Town, the capital of the Malaysian state Penang faces rising sea levels, landslides and more severe typhoons, while Yellowstone ecosystem in the western United States faces melting snows, more frequent wildfires and a changing ecosystem.

Changes in the ocean will have a profound impact on many of these sites.【4】 And rising sea levels threaten to wash away many of the world’s great archaeological sites.

Experts say that the solutions to saving these sites will be varied, but many will be very expensive.【5】

A.Different ways can be adopted to save these sites.

B.Climate change will impact these sites in different ways.

C.It is the damage from climate change to the world’s heritage.

D.How to survive in these areas has become an issue for Italians.

E.However, putting in place protective measures has proven difficult.

F.Warming water threatens to kill much of the coral in the Great Barrier Reef.

G.Therefore, they suggest that countries should work together to protect heritage sites.

22、People in the United States honor their parents with 2 special days: Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May and Father’s Day on the third Sunday in June. These days are to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home and more fathers must help with child-care.

These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day, people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It’s also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery. On these days families get together at home as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father's Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are more valued than those bought in stores. It’s not the value of the gift that is important, but “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakers, phone companies and other stores do lots of business during these holidays.

【1】Which is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for parents?

A. Parents bring up children.

B. Parents give love and care to children.

C. Parents educate children to be good persons.

D. Parents pass away before children grow up.

【2】What can we learn from the passage?

A. Both festivals are in May.

B. Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.

C. Not all the children respect their parents.

D. Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.

【3】What do you know about “carnation” in the paragraph 2?  _________.

A. It has three kinds of color.

B. It refers to the special people on Mother’s Day.

C. It's a kind of flower showing love and best wishes.

D. People can wear them only on the second Sunday in May.

【4】On Mother’s Day and Father’s Day ________.

A. people usually have family parties

B. everyone goes to the cemetery

C. children always go to parents’ home

D. hand-made cards are not the most valuable gifts

23、Several years ago, Jason Box, a scientist from Ohio, flew 31 giant rolls of white plastic to a glacier (冰川) in Greenland. He and his team spread them across 10,000 feet of ice, and then left. His idea was that the white blanket would reflect back the rays of the sun, keeping the ice cool below. When he came back to check the results, he found it worked. Exposed ice had melted faster than covered ice. He had not only saved two feet of glacier in a short time. No coal plants (煤炭工厂) were shut down, no jobs were lost, and nobody was taxed or fired. Just the sort of fix we’re looking for.

“Thank you, but no thank you.” says Ralph King, a climate scientist. He told Grey Childs, author and commentator, that people think technology can save the planet, “but there are other things we need to deal with, like consumption (消费). They burned $50,000 just for the helicopter to bring the plastic to the glacier. ”This experiment gives people false hope that climate change can be fixed (解决,处理) without changing human behavior. . It can’t. Technology won’t give us a free ride (搭便车).

Individuals respond to climate change differently. Climatologist Kelly Smith is hardly alone in her prediction that someday soon we won’t be climate victims; we will be climate choosers. More scientists agree with her that if the human race survives, the engineers will get smarter, the tools will get better, and one day we will control the climate. But what then? "Just the mention of us controlling the climate sent a small shiver (颤抖) down my back”, Grey Childs writes, “Something sounds wrong about it.”

Me? I like it better when the earth takes care of itself. I guess one day we will have to run the place, but for the moment, sitting at my desk. looking out at the trees bending wildly and the wind howling. I’m happy not to be in charge.

【1】What does Ralph King think of Jason Box’s experiment?

A.It’s a possible solution to climate change.

B.It’s a misleading attempt to fix the climate.

C.It’s a successful experiment on saving the glacier.

D.It arouses people’s attention to the problem of global warming.

【2】Which statement would Kelly Smith most probably agree with?

A.The fight against climate change will not succeed.

B.Humans will succeed in controlling climate in the future.

C.Technology is not the final solution, let alone its high cost.

D.Jason’s experiment plays a significant role in fixing climate change.

【3】What is Grey Childs’s attitude to human’s controlling the climate?

A.Supportive

B.Tolerant(容忍的)

C.Sceptical(怀疑的)

D.Unclear.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.Should we fix the climate with technology?

B.Is climate change a threatening problem?

C.Why is the earth climate getting worse?

D.What if all the glaciers disappeared?

24、Everyone learns a little bit differently. Some people learn best by listening, while others are visual learners.【1】 It will show you how best to improve your understanding of different topics whether you're a student or just someone trying to expand your knowledge base.

Try visual learning. Ask yourself if you rely on images to help you understand key topics. For example, when you are reading your biology text, do you find the diagrams more helpful than the written words? 【2】If this is helpful, you may be a visual learner.

【3】If you are not sure if this applies to you, you could begin listening to a recording of a book to see if this helps you focus and understand the text. If you need to hear something read out loud in order to fully grasp the concept, this style may be a perfect choice for you.

Learn through words. Verbal(言语的) learners are most comfortable with words, both spoken and written.【4】 Reading is one of the most effective ways for you to obtain information. When you study, do you make written outlines of the material? This is an indication that learning through words is your preference.

Use movement to learn. 【5】And movement is key to obtaining information for this style of learning. If the thought of sitting through a lecture makes you nervous, you might learn better through physical activity. Do you fidget(坐立不安)a lot? This is another sign. To find out whether you are a physical learner, try standing up while reading.

A.Use your senses.

B.Try to identify your own learning style.

C.Experiment with learning through sound.

D.Add more pictures to the topic you are learning.

E.Most people learn best with a combination of learning styles.

F.Physical learners rely on their hands, sense of touch, and physical activity.

G.If you are a bookworm, you are very likely comfortable with this learning style.
