21、A company in Yancheng, Jiangsu province, reportedly introduced an internal document requiring all employees to stop using iPhones. Those who continue using iPhones could lose their jobs while those who switch to Huawei would get subsidies, the document said.
Asked why, a senior company executive said the move was to ensure the security of information and commercial secrets, and to encourage all to support domestic brands. Some enterprises and agencies might have security concerns, but for the company involved that seems unlikely, and it seems to be more of a publicity ploy.
There have been instances in the past, too, of other private companies forbidding employees from using iPhones and insisting they support Chinese brands.
At a time when the United States government is forcing US companies to stop doing business with Huawei, it is good to see Chinese compatriots (同胞) supporting Chinese brands. However, it isn’t Apple that is stopping supplying chips and other high-tech parts to Huawei. It is US politicians. The president has also issued executive orders to shut down Tik Tok so as to force it to sell its US businesses to an American company.
The best way to support Chinese companies is to speak out against those US politicians. It is advisable, for example, to create awareness among friends in the US about the ways in which these politicians are harming both Chinese and US interests.
Boycotting US brands such as Apple is not at all advisable. It not only violates (侵犯) an individual’s personal right to choose what he or she likes, it also creates a lot of misunderstanding. Of course, organizations that deal with critical information can ask their employees to use domestic brands. But that must be done legally.
Even Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei said that patriotism should not decide whether one wants an iPhone or a Huawei. He said that he had bought Apple computers for his family and that his company must learn from its competitors.

22、 Whether you’re trying to persuade your kid to turn off the TV or your boss to give you a raise, how do we win the bargaining game? By being persuasive!【1】 How can you be more persuasive — at home, at work, in your relationships? By using the 4 Ps.
Purpose
For example, do you want a 20 percent salary increase? Do you want your kid to limit video games to 45 minutes a day? Having a clear purpose in mind makes you confident because being clear does not allow for confusion or mixed messages.【2】
Preparation
This step is commonly overlooked (忽略) as we make request What’s the why behind your purpose? For example, if you want a raise, how much money are people in your role being paid at different companies? How have you gone above and beyond in your position over the past twelve months?【3】 Preparation puts you in the strongest situation possible.
Presenting benefits
When we want someone to do something, we want to present the decision in their best interest. Once I was bargaining a conference room in a nice hotel and wanted to pay less. I didn’t mention my limited budget. I didn’t talk about my needs. What I did was to tell the manager that my guests would come to her hotel, see its amazing facilities, and even consider hosting their own conferences there.【4】 My aim was to get a 20 percent discount. 23、Climate Science fiction (cli-fi) authors have been exploring the impact of weather-gone-wild for decades. Here are a few of them that still ring true today.
The Crystal World
J. G. Ballard is often considered the godfather of cli-fi. The famous British author’s novels of the 1960s, including The Burning World, The Drowned World and The Wind From Nowhere, imagine terrible climate-based disasters.
But they’re all too gentle in nature compared with his first truly mature work, The Crystal World. In a sense, The Crystal World is a horror novel-instead of the horror happening to a person, it’s happening to Earth.
Hothouse
Brian Aldiss’ Hothouse—a series of short stories published in 1962-remains one of the most extreme visions of climate change. In it, Earth of the furthest future has changed so completely that it’s nearly unrecognizable. Humans struggle to survive in this strange world of heat waves—which, admittedly, isn’t very scientifically possible but is all the more wonderful because of Aldiss’ unbound imagination.
The Ice Schooner
The climate change in Michael Moorcock’s 1969 novel The Ice Schooner is man-made in a different way: It’s caused by a long, extreme winter that settles around Earth following a nuclear war. The book presents a world where a new ice age has resulted in a frozen planet. There’s nothing scientific about Moorcock’s setting. But it does warn, in its own way, of the disastrous climate change that humanity can bring to the world.
Ice
Anna Kavan’s Ice, like Ballard’s The Crystal World, is filled with far more symbolism than the typical early cli-fi novel. In the freezing environment of Kavan’s 1967 book, a nuclear war has led to massive global climate change that has turned the world into another Siberia.
【1】Which book contains the most frightening scenes?
A.The Burning World.
B.The Drowned World.
C.The Crystal World.
D.The Wind From Nowhere.
【2】Who wrote Hothouse?
A.Anna Kavan.

【3】What do the last two novels have in common?

B.They were published in the same year.
C.They are about heat waves in the world.
D.They imagine the results of a nuclear war.
24、Life is filled with regrets. Anyone around you will have no difficulty in telling his regrets. As we get older, we look back and wish that we have made better choices. 【1】
Make better plans.
If you start to do something, you need to make a plan before doing it. The earlier, the better.
You will know what comes first and what comes last. 【2】 If changes happen, you can have more time to deal with them.
Live a more active life.
You can go around more often. More outdoor activities can keep you relaxed and active. 【3】 “Thank you” can bring a smile to someone’s face. Learn to say “sorry” and don’t be angry with others.
【4】
A friend may make your life and he or she can break your life as well. So you have to think twice when you choose a friend. Good friends will always give you better ideas. When you get into trouble, ask others for help. That little help may get you good results.
Never fear failure.
Everybody fails. Even the greatest person fails before he or she achieves success. We should not fear failure, because failure is not the end of the road. 【5】

Researchers have found that learning two languages can greatly improve our mental development. For example, researches show us that bilingual experience helps us to rapidly make sense of information.
When given a task where children have to focus on one thing and ignore distracting information, bilingual children have shown themselves to the task. When they are asked to change their focus elsewhere, bilingual children also do this more effectively.
