21、Dealing with Disappointment
We all experience disappointments in life, and they are never easy. When you get disappointed, what do you do? Get angry? Feel depressed? 【1】 But there are better ways to deal with it.
Disappointment is a real emotion, so allow yourself to feel it. 【2】 Find a parent or a friend and share your disappointment with them. Or write your thoughts and feelings of frustration (挫败) down on paper.
A disappointment can seem huge at first. But after you’ve expressed your hurt, look at the big picture. How much will this disappointment really affect you tomorrow, next week or next year?
Look for positive activities that will help you get over your disappointment. Perhaps you enjoy writing in your journal, playing games or running in the park. 【3】 This will help you overcome the disappointment. Also, write down on paper everything that you’re grateful for. This will help you see the positive things in your life rather than the negative things.
You’ve been disappointed. That’s in the past. It’s time to move forward, so don’t think for too long about your disappointment. 【4】 In fact you may eventually realize that what you wanted is not really what you needed. You may discover you’re better off because things didn’t work out as you’d planned. There may be a positive side in your disappointment. Use the disappointment to reexamine your priorities (优先顺序). Then you may want to make major or minor changes in your life and focus on new goals. That can help you work through your disappointment. Remember, the only true failure is to give up!
A.Do one or more of those things.
B.Our response can make all the difference.
C.Remember that not all disappointments are bad.
D.Take a certain amount of time to feel hurt, sad or upset.
E.These are natural reactions when you face disappointment.
F.It is easy for you to feel great pressure after you fail to fulfill your expectation.
22、The West is full of fast food and large amounts of food which contribute to many women’s being fat. While many are fat thin women are admired and seen as healthier. This has led to a culture of gym-going strange dieting methods and frequently eating disorders. In the East women tend to be smaller and many women take pills to keep their slim figures as they get older. However you’re mistaken if you think thinness is the beauty standard all over the world. The BBC reports that in Mauritania Africa the opposite is true.
In Mauritania mothers force their daughters to eat a lot of food so that they get as fat as possible. The fatter they are the more likely they are to marry well.Fat is also considered healthy because in a country where HIV/AIDS is a very real problem thin people are often sick and dying. However “healthy” fat women are suffering from some problems of their own and many are dying in their 40s of weight-related diseases.
The Mauritanian government is trying to warn its people of the dangers of being overweight but it’s not easy to change cultural views. Many women worry that if they lose weight their husbands will leave them for fatter more attractive women.
It seems that while education about the dangers of being too thin and too fat is very important what the world really needs is to become less pre-occupied with the size shape and weight of women’s bodies. The promotion of healthy practices is easy but changing cultural beauty standards takes more time imagination and effort.

23、 With Chinese consumers hit by quarantine (隔离期)and travel restrictions as well as just cautious about going out to the shops due to the coronavirus epidemic(流行病),companies in China are experimenting with new tricks to make sales.
Oil giant Sinopec — keen to get customers back in their cars and help farmers due to roadblocks — launched a new project last month called "zerotouch" vegetable sales at its 6,000 gas stations in 147 Chinese cities. Consumers place and pay for orders on the app and when they drive up, gas station employees put the vegetables into their car trunk, eliminating any need for human-to-human contact.
"The coronavirus outbreak has made it difficult for people to shop as before," said Li Hong, vice president of Sinopec's convenience store sales division. "Travel demand has been falling, but demand for food is pretty rigid."
Mengniu Dairy, China's dairy producer, is racing to add more vending machines to the 10,000 it currently has, saying the epidemic has driven unexpectedly strong demand for the sales channel. Its system allows customers to order products like milk and yoghurt online which can then be picked up from their local vending machine. "The virus outbreak has decreased consumption for dairy products as people are unwilling to go to the supermarket," said Meng Fanjie, head of the company's Communist Party committee. Luckin Coflfee, a competitive rival to Starbucks, now also offers the sanitizer (消毒) products (e.g. hand soap) besides coffee. Liu Xingliaging, an independent retait analyst, said, however, that Luckin's strategy would have only a modest impact. “At best some users will place an order when they buy coffee, but nobody is deliberately choosing the Luckin app just to buy sanitizer.”

24、Cycling through the park and riding off-road through the forest are great ways to enjoy the outdoors and have fun. Over the course of 200 years, bicycles have changed a lot and have changed the way we travel, exercise and enjoy ourselves. Here, we take a ride through the wonderful world of bikes.
The first two-wheeled bicycle, similar to the ones we use today, was built in 1817 in Germany. At the time, horses were the main method of transport. However, thanks to a poor harvest (收获), there was a shortage of food to feed the horses, so they could not be used. Baron Karl von Drais invented a bike made of wood, with no pedals (踏板). He made himself move forward by pushing off the ground with his feet.
In the 1860s, engineers in France made bikes with pedals on the front wheel. These were the first bikes to be called bicycles, although they were nicknamed “boneshakers” because they were so uncomfortable to ride. Other people also used the similar design, and some added much larger front wheels. These strange-looking bikes were known as penny farthings—named after two British coins of very different sizes. They became popular but were unsafe because they had a very high saddle (车座).
In 1885, John Kemp Starley from England made the “safety bike”, which had equal-sized front and back wheels. Soon after that, the first air-filled tyres (轮胎) were added to bicycles, making them much more comfortable to ride. This led to bikes becoming very popular in both Europe and the US. In 1896, a New York Times article said, “The bicycle promises a development of personal power and freedom, hardly inferior (较差的) to what wings would give.”
