21、 There’s nothing quite like new clothes, is there? The UK certainly loves them.According to a report by the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC), the UK consumes five times more clothes today than it did in the 1980s That’s more than any other nation in Europe and rises to around 26.7 kgs per person. This results in 235 million garments going to landfill-victims of fast fashion.
Fast fashion is defined as an accelerated fashion business-model involving increased numbers of new fashion collections every year, quick turnarounds and lower prices, according to the EAC. Globalization means that attire is made in countries where labor is cheaper. This saving is passed on to consumers, who then consider the garments they own disposable—easily replaceable with something more on trend. And that creates problems.
First, there’s the environmental cost. Producing any kind of textile costs resources. For example, synthetic fibers, which are made from plastic, have a larger carbon footprint than natural ones. Natural fibers, although more carbon-efficient, still require more water to grow. And further resources are used as the cloth is dyed, made into clothing and transported to retail for sale. Secondly, the fast-fashion industry is under pressure to put the latest trending items on shelves fast, which can lead to workers being exploited and forced to work in poor working conditions. In countries such as Bangladesh, Ethiopia and the Philippines, workers are paid wages that are insufficient to live on. One worker in Ethiopia told the BBC that they had to deal with intolerable conditions, such as delayed overtime payments, verbal abuse, and dirty toilets.
So what can be done in the UK to reduce clothes waste? The EAC has recommended eighteen improvements to the UK government, from increasing tax on purchases to fund recycling centres to introducing more sewing lessons in schools, encouraging a make do-and-mend attitude when things become worn out.
What can we do? “Shop second-hand”, recommends Tolly Gregory, an ethical fashion blogger. Kristabel Plummer, a London-based fashion blogger, who spoke to the BBC, also recommends “looking for quality” and “longevity”. So keep an eye out for durable, hardy clothes that resists wear and tear.
【1】Which of the following statements is not true about “fast fashion.”?
A.More and more new clothes are made every year.
B.Fashionable dresses are worn by customers for long.
C.Consumers don’t have to pay high prices for new fashion.
D.Fast fashion causes too much waste.
【2】How many problems with fast fashion are mentioned in this article?
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
【3】Which of the following may contribute to reducing clothes waste?
A.Increasing tax on retail sellers.
B.Throwing away clothes soon after they are worn out.
C.Producing low-priced clothes and fast-renewed clothes.
D.Teaching students how to sew in schools.
【4】What is the author’s attitude toward fast fashion?
A.Critical. B.Tolerable C.Approving. D.Doubtful.
22、Modern zoos aim to promote animal conservation, educate people, and support further wildlife research. Staff are devoted to providing species specific housing and appropriate diets to ensure that the animals’ lives are as natural as possible within captivity (圈养).
In fact, most zoo animals have been born and bred in captivity. They have never experienced “the wild”, which many people assume is a wonderful and safe place, despite destruction of natural habits for palm oil threats from climate change or the increase in poaching.
There are two ways capturing animals helps conserve them. Zoo conservation work can be in-situ (在原处)where money: expertise and sometimes staff are provided to protect animals and their habitats in the wild. Large, charming animals such as pandas, tigers or elephants draw the crowds. These flagship species help to raise the image and funds for in-situ conservation efforts for the not so well known species
“Ex-situ” conservation, meanwhile, takes place outside of the animals’ natural habitats, usually back at the zoo and often involving international captive breeding programs. These studbooks(良种登记册) can outline suitable genetic matches for breeding, to keep a sustainable captive population of a certain species and ensure genetic variation.
In the UK a least, zoos must have a written education strategy and an active education programme. If you have been to an accredited (官方认可的) zoo recently you will have noticed they use games and technology to go way beyond these basic requirements.
Research within zoos often looks at animal behaviour or welfare helping to ensure the animals are well housed and fed. Other research investigates the impact humans have on the zoo animals from the visitor effect to the relationships which can be formed between the animals and their keepers. Research also focuses on biological functioning of animals. Much of this is work that cannot be conducted in the wild if the animals live in remote or inhospitable areas.
Overall, zoos provide opportunities to observe and engage with exotic (外国的) animals, many of which may be threatened with extinction in the wild. Seeing them up close can cause a passion for biology, conservation and the environment.
【1】What do people think of “the wild”?
A.It poses a danger to humans.
B.It is perfect for large animals
C.It is an ideal habitat for animals.
D.It guarantees the safety of animals.
【2】What highlights “ex-situ” conservation?
A.Saving the conservation cost.
B.Attracting more visitors to zoos.
C.Keeping a species’ population stable.
D.Changing the genes of a certain species.
【3】What is Paragraph 6 mainly about?
A.How zoo keepers get along with animals.
B.How zoos can contribute to research work.
C.What researchers are expected to do in zoos.
D.Why it is difficult to carry out research in the wild.
【4】What is the author’s purpose in wring the text?
A.To show zoos ways to raise animals.
B.To stress modern zoos research value.
C.To defend zoos role in protecting animals.
D.To advise zoos to release animals into the wild.
23、 Every dog owner knows that saying Good dog! A happy, high-pitched voice will bring about a flurry of joyful tail wagging in their pet.
That makes scientists curious. What exactly happens in your dog’s brain when it hears praise? And is it similar to the way our own brain processes such acoustic information?
When a person gets a compliment, the more primitive subcortical(皮下的)auditory regions first react to the intonation(声调) , the emotional force of spoken words. Next, the brain taps the more recently evolved auditory cortex(皮质)to figure out the meaning of the words, which is learned.
【1】 Of course, dogs use their right brain hemisphere to do so, whereas we use our left hemisphere. Still, a mystery remains. Do their brains go through the same steps to process approval?
It’s an important question. Dogs are speechless species.【2】 For instance, some dogs are able to recognize thousands of names of individual objects. They can even link each name to a specific object.
When the scientists studied scans of the brains of pet dogs, they found that theirs, like ours, processed the sounds of spoken words in a multi-step manner. They analyze first the emotional component with the older region of the brain, the subcortical regions. Subsequently, they deal with the words’ meaning with the newer part, the cortex.
Previous studies have shown that many animals, from songbirds to dolphins, use the subcortex to process emotional hints.【3】Zebras, for instance, can eavesdrop on the emotion, or fright to be precise, in other herbivore(食草动物)animals’ calls. In this way they learn if predators are nearby.
It’s likely that human language evolved from such hints. We employ the same neurological systems to develop speech.【4】Dogs have the very likeliness to make special use of the ancient connection to process human emotions. It helps explain why dogs are so successful at partnering with us and at times manipulating us with those soulful eyes.
A.It is widely recognized that the dog has a complex structure of brain, similar, in a way, to that of human’s.
B.But they respond correctly to our words.
C.Animals are found to have adopted various mechanisms to defend against enemies.
D.They are capable of obtaining mood implications even though they can’t talk.
E.It has been discovered that dogs’ brains, like those of humans, compute the intonation and meaning separately.
F.Domesticated animals have evolved alongside humans for the past thousands of years.
