二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   A scientist working at her lab bench and a six-old baby playing with his food might seem to have little in common. After all, the scientist is engaged in serious research to uncover the very nature of the physical world. and the baby is. well, just playing .. right? Perhaps. but some developmental psychologists have argued that this “play" is more like a scientific investigation than one might think .

Take a closer look at the baby playing at the table. Each time the bowl of rice is pushed over the table edge. it falls in the ground -- and, in the process, it brings out important evidence about how physical objects interact; bowls of rice do not float in mid-air, but require support to remain stable. It is likely that babies are not born knowing the basic fact of the universe; nor are they ever clearly taught it. Instead, babies may form an understanding of object support through repeated experiments and then build on this knowledge to learn even more about how objects interact. Though their ranges and tool differ, the baby' s investigation and the scientist's experiment appear to share the same aim (to learn about the natural world), overall approach (gathering direct evidence from the world), and logic (are my observations what I expected?)

Some psychologists suggest that young children learn about more than just the physical world in this way - that they investigate human psychology and the rules of language using similar means. For example, it may only be through repeated experiments, evidence gathering and finally overturning a theory, that a baby will come to accept the idea that other people can have different views and desires from what he or she has, for example, unlike the child, Mommy actually doesn’t like Dove chocolate.

Viewing childhood development as a scientific investigation throws light on how children learn, but it also offers an inspiring look at science and scientists. Why do young children and scientists seem to be so much alike? Psychologists have suggested that science as an effort ----the desire to explore, explain, and understand our world ---- is simply something that comes from our babyhood. Perhaps evolution provided human babies with curiosity and a natural drive to explain their worlds, and adult scientists simply make use of the same drive that served them as children. The same cognitive systems that make young children feel good about figuring something out may have been adopted by adult scientists. As some psychologists put it." It is not that children are little scientists but that scientists are big children.

1According to some developmental psychologists,____.

A.a baby's play is nothing more than a game

B.a baby's play is somehow similar to a scientist s experiment

C.scientists should conduct scientific investigation with babies

D.research into babies' games helps to reveal the nature of physics

2Children may learn the rules of language by_____.

A.exploring the physical world B.investigating human psychology

C.repeating their own experiments D.observing their parents' behaviors

3What is the main idea of the whole passage?

A.The world may be more clearly explained through children’s play.

B.Studying babies' play may lead to a better understanding of science.

C.Children may have greater ability to figure out things than scientists.

D.One's drive for scientific research may become stronger as he grows.

22、Parents who help their children with homework may actually be bringing down their school grades. Other forms of parental involvement, including volunteering at school and observing a child's class, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic.

The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting(养育子女) where schools expect them to act as partners in their children's education. Previous generations concentrated on getting children to school on time, fed, dressed and ready to learn.

Kaith Robinson, the author of the study, said, "I really don't know if the public is ready for this but there are some ways parents can be involved in their kids' education that leads to declines in their academic performance. One of the things that were consistently negative was parents' help with homework." Robinson suggested that may be because parents themselves struggle to understand the task." They may either not remember the material their kids are studying now, or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but they're still offering advice."

Robinson assessed parental involvement performance and found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks. In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant.

Common sense suggests it was a good thing for parents to get involved because "children with good academic success do have involved parents", admitted Robinson. But he argued that this did not prove parental involvement was the root cause of that success." A big surprise was that Asian-American parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly involved. They took a more reasonable approach, conveying to their children how success at school could improve their lives."

Know what you want. Maybe your goal is specific. 【2】 Or maybe it's a more general goal, like aiming to be a happier person. Either way, the path toward meeting your goals will be much clearer if you know what you really want.

【3】 The first challenge you likely meet is improving your self-confidence. It's really difficult to make progress unless you believe you're capable of persevering. However difficult your goals may seem to reach now, you have the intelligence and power to make it.

Face reality. Having the ability to stare life's challenges in the face is a big advantage. 【4】 When a big problem arises, it's so much easier to ignore it or put off making a decision. Practice seeing challenges for what they are so you can figure out the best way around, over or through them.

Learn from your mistakes. You won't always find your way on the first try. Wisdom is gained by making lots of mistakes and trying something different the next time around. Think about what has happened. 【5】

24、One beautiful day, I showed up for work, where I had just been promoted. I was right in the middle of training a new girl, when my boss asked to talk to me for a second. After that conversation, you can effectively cross “had a good job" off my comfortable living checklist. No warning. In fact, just the month before I had received my fifth Employee of the Month award. I was speechless and so was everyone else. Seven of us were cut from my department that day. Later, I would discover that there were thousands of cuts companywide. I worked at a bank. A failing one.

When something like this happens to you, it's natural to ask why. I reviewed all my work accomplishments. I thought about how I had been a top performer every month since I was hired and about how they gave me the highest rating on my review. What had I done wrong? What could I have done better?

The truth is that sometimes we search for a logical explanation in a situation that can’t be understood. The only way to move past it is to have confidence in the job you did as an employee and understand that you are a victim of an unfortunate circumstance.

Speaking of writing, with all of the extra time on my hands, I reunited with the long lost love of my life: writing.

I decided to pursue writing as an actual job. I designed a website and applied for writing jobs. I started getting more and more clients. It occurred to me that with some hard work I might be able to make a living doing what I love. So there I was, three months after the sky fell, thinking about how incredibly blessed I was. And this would never have happened had I not lost something in the first place.
