22、Quiet Power
Since 2011, people around the world have been celebrating World Introvert Day on January 2. The word introvert describes a personality type. 【1】 They are likely to feel drained by environments that are highly stimulating and may often need to go to a quiet place to recharge.
World Introvert Day began with a blog post from German psychologist Felicitas Heyne. She suggested that introverts are often misunderstood, and their mental health suffers because popular culture is dominated by extroverts. Her idea was to celebrate World Introvert Day to raise awareness of the social challenges that introverts face. 【2】
There are many famous introverts in art and science, such as Albert Einstein. Charles Darwin, J.K. Rowling, and Lady Gaga. It is believed that many introverts have a great ability to focus and strong powers of imagination. After the noisy New Year celebrations are over, people can set aside one day for some quiet time by themselves or with some introverted friends. 【3】
The opposite of an introvert is called an extrovert. Extroverts love connecting with other people, work well in groups, and are usually very confident. When introverts don’t fit into groups of extroverts, they may be seen as cold, uninterested, or timid. Popular culture tells us that it is important to network, socialize, and communicate, but all of this can make introverts feel uncomfortable.
Scientists are studying what causes someone to be an introvert or an extrovert. Recent studies show that genes are a factor, and most people seem to be born with one personality type or the other. 【4】 Our environment and experiences also influence whether we are introverted or extroverted. The term ambivert describes someone who is right in the middle. No matter what personality type we have, we can always celebrate our differences and learn from each other.
A.It would also celebrate the contributions of introverts throughout history.
B.The brain of an introvert can respond dramatically to a very mild stimulus.
C.You never know what new ideas you might find when you slow down to enjoy some peace and quiet.
D.Introverted people are known to live with unique challenges and gift.
E.Introverted people don't require a lot of social contact, and they enjoy spending time alone.
F.Part of what makes us introverted or extroverted is how our brains respond to the world around us.
23、The health benefits of staying active are already well-known. It can help you manage weight, keep blood sugar levels down and reduce risk factors for heart disease.
Now, a new study suggests that regularly playing sports, especially badminton or tennis, is not only healthy but also reduces your risk of death, at any age, by approximately 50%. This is a big scale population study to explore the health benefits of sports in terms of death rate. The study evaluated responses from 80, 306 adults aged 30 and above in England and Scotland, who were surveyed about their health, lifestyle and exercise patterns.
After adjusting factors such as age, sex, weight, smoking habits, alcohol use, education and other forms of exercise besides the named sports, the researchers compared the risk of death among people who took part in a sport to those who didn’t. The percentage of reduced risk of death was found to be: 47% for racket(球拍)sports, 28% for swimming and 15% for cycling.
In addition to this, the study didn’t find any significant reduction in the risk for sports like running and football. The findings also exposed that over 44% of the participants met the guidelines for the recommended exercise levels to stay fit and healthy, which amounts to 150 minutes of moderate(适度的) physical activity in a week.
Does this mean you stop running or playing football and switch to tennis instead? Every kind of sport and physical activity has different physical, social and mental benefits attached to it. The apparent lack of benefits of running and football could result from several variables that were not taken into account.
Being active helps you feel happier and live longer. So, the most important step is to take part in any kind of sport that you are likely to enjoy and follow in the long term.
【1】How is the study conducted?
A.By doing comparative experiments.
B.By analyzing previous data.
C.By evaluating survey information.
D.By tracking participants for a long time.
【2】What does the underlined part “the named sports” refer to?
A.Ball sports.
B.Racket sports.
C.Individual sports.
D.Traditional sports.
【3】What can we infer from paragraph 5?
A.Few people will play football.
B.Tennis will become more popular.
C.The result of this study is wrong.
D.The study needs to be further improved.
【4】What does the author advise people to do?
A.Stick to any sport that you like.
B.Play badminton and tennis only.
C.Stop running and playing football.
D.Do any sport according to guidelines.
24、James Cameron, writer-director-producer of best picture Oscar winner “Titanic” (1997), has again denied a claim perennially put forth by fans: that there was room for Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) to climb aboard the floating door holding Rose (Kate Winslet) and avoid death by hypothermia (低体温) following the shipwreck in the North Atlantic.
Stating that “it says on page 147 [of the script] that Jack dies,” Cameron, 63, told Vanity Fair, “Obviously it was an artistic choice, [that] the thing was just big enough to hold her, and not big enough to hold him”. Finding it “silly, really, that we’re having this discussion 20 years later.” the filmmaker pointed out that, “Had he lived, the ending of the film would have been meaningless... So whether it was that, or whether a smokestack fell on him, he was going down.”
He added he believed the physics were correct as well. “I was in the water with the piece of wood putting people on it for about two days getting it exactly buoyant (漂浮) enough so that it would support one person with full free-board, meaning that she wasn’t immersed at all in the 28 degree water, so that she could survive the three hours it took until the rescue ship got there... And we very, very finely tuned it to be exactly what you see in the movie because I believed at the time, and still do that that’s what it would have taken for one person to survive.”
Winslet and fellow “Titanic” star Kathy Bates suggest otherwise, with Bates at the SAG AFTRA Foundation 2nd Annual Patron of the Artists Awards on Nov. 9 introducing Winslet by saying, “He lets go of her hand and sinks into the depth of the Atlantic. And I personally think that there was plenty of room on there!” Winslet agreed, telling the audience lightheartedly, “He could have fit on it! He could have fit on that door!” She similarly said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in February 2016 that Jack “could have actually fitted on that bit of door.”
As far back as 2012, Cameron told IGN.com, “It’s not a question of room, it’s a question of buoyancy... It’s clear that there’s really only enough buoyancy available for one person... She’s completely out of the water on the raft, and ... if he got on with her, they’d both be half in and half out of the water ... and they would have both died of hypothermia.
As well, he had told The Daily Beast in January, “You read page 147 of the script and it says, ‘Jack gets off the board and gives his place to her so that she can survive’ It’s that simple”
Referring to a 2012 episode of Discovery’s “MythBusters” in which he gamely guest-starred, Cameron told the website, “You’re Jack, you’re in water that’s 28 degrees, your brain is starting to get hypothermia. ‘MythBusters’ asks you to now go take off your life vest, take hers off, swim underneath this thing, attach it in some way that it won’t just wash out two minutes later - which means you’re underwater tying this thing on in 28-degree water, and that’s going to take you five to 10 minutes, so by the time you come back up you’re already dead. So that wouldn’t work. His best choice was to keep his upper body out of the water and hope to get pulled out by a boat or something before he died.”
【1】What question have the fans raised about the plot of the Titanic?
A.They think the ending of the story was not good enough.

D.the core role of the film is the actress not the actor
【3】Which of the following people hold(s) a different viewpoint of Jack’s life?
A.Kathy Bates.
B.Winslet.
C.James Cameron.
D.The fans.
【4】According to the passage, which of the following is incorrect?
A.According to the director, the hero is dead on page 147 of the script.
B.If the hero were still alive, the ending of the movie would be meaningless.
C.James Cameron attended the Foundation 2nd Annual Patron of the Artists Awards.
D.Some fans don’t want to believe that the hero is dead in the movie.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My pillow was wet because of tears that night before the winter holiday. An e-mail from my college’s financial aid office was still showing on my computer screen. I didn’t have the money to return the next semester(学期).
My roommates were comparing their new class schedules, and planning how to share textbooks. They were another step closer to their dreams.
I was packing my dreams into boxes , along with blankets, pillows and towels. My dad helped carry my belongings into his old blue pickup truck and I hugged my friends and said goodbye. There were a mixture of best wishes and hopes for my return, but I knew my departure was probably permanent.
As the New Year passed, my social networks were filled with my classmates’ hopes for the new school season. They were returning to school and I was at home. I didn’t realize how lonely it would feel.
It was the first official day of school. I woke to the ring of the phone downstairs. As my father talked on the phone, I started searching for jobs in my area. Now that I wasn’t in school, I would need to start paying back my school loans.
The fact that I wouldn’t be returning to school became real. Ever since I had packed my things in my suitcase, there had been this small hope that maybe a miracle(奇迹)would happen. And I thought , “If someone helps me remain in college, I won’t disappoint him / her. I’ll study harder and repay his / her kindness someday!’’ But as I searched the job listings, I knew I had given up hope. No hero was going to come and save me.
The sound of the phone being hurriedly placed into the receiver and the thundering of my dad’s footsteps pulled me from my self-pity. “Son , pack up your stuff ; you’re heading back to school!” my father shouted. “The call was from the financial(财政的,金融的) aid office. The clerk on the phone said someone unknown had secretly donated money and paid all the rest of your college tuition.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
