21、Water runs downhill from mountaintops to streams to rivers to oceans. But downhill isn’t the only way that water moves. A new study measures how water travels from country to country for human consumption. This flow isn’t the type we usually think about. These scientists looked at the water used to grow and make the products which get shipped from nation to nation as imports or exports. They call this a flow of “virtual water”.
We typically think about water as the liquid that flows from a tap. However, 92%of the water used by people goes into growing crops, according to water researcher Arjen Hoekstra. He recently studied the hidden travels of virtual water used in products made from things like crops and meats. These products are shipped around the world.
For example, consider a sugary soft drink, Hoekstra estimated that to produce one half-liter of the drink requires between 170 and 310 liters of the water—about 95%—is used to grow and process the ingredients(原料). Another 4%goes into the packaging and labeling. In Hoekstra’s calculation, when one country produces a half-liter of soda and sells it abroad,it exports as much virtual water as would fill a large refrigerator.
According to Hoekstra’s new report, dry countries like Israel and Kuwait, both in the Middle East, get the majority of their virtual water from other countries, through imported products. More surprisingly, some wetter countries, like the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, also get the majority of their virtual water from other places. That means that most of the water used to grow or produce the products and food consumed in those countries came from other countries.
In the United States most of the virtual water used comes from American sources. In China even less of the water associated with its products.
Hoekstra and his team turned up other surprising relationships. For example, dry areas in northern China send virtual water to the southern part of that country, which is wetter, “There are exporting regions that do have a lot of water stress,” he said in an interview.

22、“We are good mothers,” I said to my friend, as we sat on our comfortable beach chairs under our beach umbrella and watched our children playing in the waves.
Out of nowhere, the children took off running. About fifty yards from us, a man—maybe in his fifties—was fishing. The children stood next to him and watched with their little mouths hanging open as he cast the fishing lines. He smiled at them. They ran back to us—all except my three-year-old daughter, Drew.
My heart beat fast with horror. “Drew! Come here! Play with your friends!” I shouted, very aware that my speeches about not talking to strangers weren’t working. It seemed that many parents heard of horrible stories about children being taken away by strangers. Responsible mothers should teach their children that the world is a dangerous place. So I felt relieved when Drew ran towards me and took hold of a shovel (铲子). Then she looked me in the eye: “I want to be with the person.”
Again, she approached the middle-aged man, and started digging next to him.
Several seconds later, she returned, waving something shiny.
“Look, Mommy! A toy fish!”
It was, indeed, a toy fish—yellow and rubber. This must have been what he was using to attract the fish. And he’d given it to Drew. The three other children were deeply impressed, and they didn’t try to hide how jealous(妒忌的)they were—clearly, they all wanted the fish.
“My friend gave me that fish!” Drew shouted loudly. The sand in front of the umbrella turned into a preschool cage match with a yellow rubber fish flying through the air. I felt like I might cry myself.
Unexpectedly, there he was: the man, standing right next to us with three more rubber fish in hand. He handed them to each of the children. By their faces, you would have thought he was actually the really kind big brother.
“Thank you,” I said, realizing that there is good and kindness in strangers.

A. Give a kid a fish

23、 For famous photojournalist Sir Don McCullin, the landscape has changed since the days when dozens of printed pages were devoted to his photo stories, leading him to declare, “Photojournalism is dying.” According to Sir Don McCullin, newspapers and magazines are much more interested in the wealthy, the glamorous and celebrities. They don’t want suffering people in their newspapers. Photojournalism hasn’t lost its way but it’s been conveniently pushed aside. Shrinking editorial budgets, increasing competition and mistrust of the Press are just some of the factors impacting photojournalism. But the power of photography endures and technology is allowing photographers more creative freedom than ever before. The world is hungry for visual storytelling, but will photojournalism survive?
We spoke to photojournalists working in this industry about the state of affairs today, and asked their opinions about photojournalism in the digital age.
Ilvy Njiokiktjien
“Assignments have changed, so people don’t need to go somewhere for months to work on one project. When Don McCullin’s pictures were making it into the newspaper, his images would be the news. Now if I take a picture at Nelson Mandela’s funeral, for instance, there are 300 other photographers there. There are so many images that you are never going to really shoot an iconic image. You’re not the only one there — there are your colleagues and there are people with cellphones. I don’t think a single image will ever lose its power. Single images, to me, are so strong — I can look at a single image and never forget it. But there are new ways of storytelling — with cellphones, with interactive online experiences and virtual reality. Therefore, it’s important to see what matches the story.”
Jérôme Sessini
“I think now we are freer than before because of technology. Besides, we don’t care about the newspapers like people did before. We get free from the newspapers, so we are able to tell stories in the way we want to tell them. In my opinion, pictures can express emotions — I believe more in emotions than in rationality. I don’t want to tell people, ‘this is like this’, or ‘like that’. I want them to first feel something from the pictures, and then ask some questions. They will have to find the answers by themselves.”
Magnus Wennman
“When I started, press photography was a pretty old-school profession, but today it’s completely different. It’s not about the technique any more. It’s about telling stories, and you have endless opportunities to tell stories by means of pictures. If you are engaging in storytelling, I would say your future is very bright. Photojournalism is more democratic. As a matter of fact, nowadays we can see people shooting with their cellphones anywhere. Photojournalism is no longer the privilege of those working at newspapers. The new generation of photojournalists should work in a completely different way. As you see everywhere, visual storytelling is getting more and more important. If you’re good at that, you’re going to survive.”
Daniel Etter
“A lot of people have been declaring that photojournalism is dead and, somehow, it’s still around. It’s still alive, and it’s still kicking — maybe not quite as hard as in Don McCullin’s days, but it’s still important. It doesn’t have the impact it once had, and it will never have that impact again. I always believe photography plays a role, but if there are better ways of telling visual stories, I’m fine with that. The biggest problem we are running into now is how to make others believe us. Look at how really basic facts are in question nowadays. To make our work a reliable source of information is our biggest challenge. I haven’t figured out a way to make news more trustworthy — the only thing we can do is do good work. That means doing research and trying to represent events in a fair way.”

A.Great news like this is always attractive.
B.Taking a satisfying picture is really difficult.
C.Too many people take up photojournalism.
D.Popularity of cellphones threatens photojournalism.
【2】What idea do Sessini and Wennman share?
A.Good pictures are worth all the hard work.
B.It’s better to let the picture itself tell stories.
C.Technology is photographers’ greatest enemy.
D.Photojournalism will be the first to be kicked out.
【3】What does the underlined sentence mean?
A.Photojournalism enjoys great popularity nowadays.
B.Photojournalism is really a promising career in the future.
C.Everyone can report news stories using photos taken by themselves.
D.Photojournalism has lost its appeal for those working at newspapers.
【4】What does Etter say about photojournalism?
A.It is not as influential as in Don McCullin’s days.
B.It almost died in Don McCullin’s days.
C.It may have an even better future.
D.It actually exists in name only.
【5】What can we learn about Etter?
A.His talent was once questioned.
B.He is optimistic about his future career.
C.He will resign from his job sooner or later.
D.He is seeking suitable ways to tell visual stories.
24、Vida Woodhull Stabler is the director of the Omaha culture center at Omaha Nation Public Schools in Macy, Nebraska. She has been working for years to pass on the cultural knowledge of tribal (部落的) elders for future generations. But she faces a predicament: Only about a dozen Omaha tribe members speak the language fluently today.
For Kyleigh Merrick, 15, learning the Omaha language as a teen today is important but also a challenge. She goes to language class every day, but outside of class, there are few opportunities to speak it. Her great-grandmother uses it at home, but among her peers, only a handful will sometimes greet each other in the Omaha language. At school, only a few students are taking Omaha language classes and seem deeply interested in tribal language and culture.
Another big force that has worked against passing the native tribal language on over generations is boarding schools . The local government began sending native students to boarding schools from the 1800s to the 1960s. Students there were not allowed to express tribal culture and were taught only English.
“Our language does not have access to the same types of materials that Spanish and German do ― you can walk into any library and find Spanish books to read,” Stabler said. “Our community has had to develop tangible (有形的) materials on our own. The first challenge is ensuring people want to learn. The second is making sure they have materials to learn from.”
At Omaha Nation Public Schools, Stabler put tribal culture into students’ everyday school experiences, like hanging up a calendar with months in English and Omaha. In biology class, for instance, kids might make traditional tribal foods.
For Stabler, the work of making sure tribal culture lives on into the next generations never stops. “If students are rooted to our land ― they’ll be rooted as human beings,” Stabler said.

A.Few students have an interest in learning the Omaha language.
B.Spanish and German books should be banned from libraries.
C.More reading materials in the Omaha language should be provided.
D.The local government forces students to speak only English in school.
【4】What efforts does Stabler make to keep the Omaha language alive?
A.Setting up tribal libraries.
