21、At the beginning of the World Series of 1947,I experienced a completely new emotion, when the National Anthem was played. This time,I thought,it is being played for me,as much as for anyone else. This is organized major league baseball, and I am standing here with all the others;and everything that takes place includes me.
About a year later,I went to Atlanta,Georgia,to play in an exhibition game.On the field, for the first time in Atlanta, there were Negroes and whites.Other Negroesbesides me.And I thought: What I have always believed has come to be.
And what is it that I have always believed? First, that imperfections are human. But that wherever human beings were given room to breathe and time to think, those imperfections would disappear,no matter how slowly.I do not believe that we have found or even approached perfection. That is not necessarily in the scheme of human events.Handicaps, stumbling blocks, prejudices — all of these are imperfect.Yet,they have to be dealt with because they are in the scheme of human events.
Whatever obstacles I found made me fight all the harder. But it would have been impossible for me to fight at all, except that I was sustained by the personal and deep-rooted belief that my fight had a chance. It had a chance because it took place in a free society. Not once was I forced to face and fight an immovable object. Not once was the situation so cast-iron rigid that I had no chance at all.Free minds and human hearts were at work all around me;and so there was the probability of improvement.I look at my children now,and know that I must still prepare them to meet obstacles and prejudices.
But I can tell them, too, that they will never face some of these prejudices because other people have gone before them. And to myself I can say that, because progress is unalterable, many of today's dogmas (教条)will havevanishedby the time they grow into adults.I can say to my children: There is a chance for you.No guarantee, but a chance. And this chance has come to be,because there is nothing static with free people. There is no Middle Ages logic so strong that it can stop the human tide from flowing forward. I do not believe that every person,in every walk of life, can succeed in spite of any handicap. That would be perfection. But I do believe — and with every fiber in me — that what I was able to attain came to be because we put behind us (no matter how slowly) the dogmas of the past: to discover the truth of today;and perhaps find the greatness of tomorrow.
I believe in the human race.I believe in the warm heart.I believe in man's honesty.I believe in the goodness of a free society. And I believe that the society can remain good only as long as we are willing to fight for it — and to fight against whatever imperfections may exist. My fight was against the barriers that kept Negroes out of baseball. This was the area where I found imperfection, and where I was best able to fight. And I fought because I knew it was not doomed to be a losing fight. It couldn't be a losing fight-not when it took place in a free society. And in the largest sense,I believe that what I did was done for me — that it was my faith in God that sustained me in my fight. And that what was done for me must and will be done for others.

22、In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fairweather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(信任).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor,he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.
When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding,I know I’ve found a friend!

23、Yesterday I started the Year of Giving, my first day of a year-long journey into exploring the act of giving and the meaning of charity. I chose December 15 as the starting date, which marked three years since my mother died from heart disease. She was one of the most generous people that I have ever known. She always thought of others first and certainly serves as an inspiration to me.
I had a rather busy day yesterday, ironic (具有讽刺意义的) for someone who is unemployed right now. In the morning I went to the gym, and unsuccessfully got the phone call from the unemployment office for some job searching. Before I knew it, it was noon. I grabbed a quick lunch and rushed down to a meeting. On my way to Connecticut, I wondered if I would see someone that I would feel forced to give my first $ 10 to. I was running late and decided to do it afterwards.
After the meeting I had about half an hour to find the first person of my Year of Giving! I decided to check out DuPont Circle. I had met a guy there named Jerry once and thought he would willing accept my $ 10. He wasn’t there, but I did see a man sitting by himself who looked really lonely, so I approached him. Now I had to figure out what I was going to say, I think I said something like, “Hi, can I sit down here?” “I would like to know if I could give you $ 10?” He asked me to repeat what I had said, I did, then he looked at me funny, got up and left.
I then started walking south where I spotted a man standing by the bus stop on Connecticut Ave. He appeared to be in his 60s. I don’t know what drew me to him, but I thought I would make my second attempt. I was a bit nervous and asked him which bus came by that stop. Then I explained that I was starting a year-long project to give $ 10 to someone every day and that I wanted to give my $ 10 for today to him. The gentleman, I later found out that his name was Ed, responded without hesitation that he could not accept my offer and that there were many people more deserving the money than him. This was exactly one of the things that I hoped would happen. People would think of others before themselves.

24、You’ve probably heard this dental advice before: brush your teeth twice a day.【1】Here’s what experts have to say.
According to Dr. Mark Burhenne , a dentist based in Sunnyvale, California, the key to teeth protection is managing your biofilm(生物膜)—an outer coating on your teeth containing bacteria. In that biofilm are bacteria that pull certain minerals from saliva(唾液).【2】
When we eat things, especially sugary or acid foods, they will stick to our teeth.【3】The thicker and furry biofilm can no longer remineralize our teeth properly. The movement of the toothbrush is what breaks up the thickened biofilm so that it reforms into its natural thin and slippery state to protect teeth.
【4】 According to Alicia Murria, a dentist based in Washington, your toothpaste is going to help you to feel fresher. It’s also going to help to kill some of the bacteria inside your mouth. But the most important step in keeping your teeth clean is good brushing technique. By brushing each tooth and slightly sweeping the gum line with your brush at a 45-degree angle, you’ll be able to remove plaques(牙斑). If your brushing technique is good, even a toothbrush with water can be enough.
Murria suggests brushing your teeth first thing in the morning, before eating breakfast. If you do happen to eat first, make sure you wait at least 30 minutes before brushing. The acid from the meal softens the enamel(牙釉质).【5】
A.But whose advice should we follow?
B.The biofilm layer will get thicker and thicker.
C.But why and how are we supposed to do it?
D.Choose the right toothpaste that suits you best.
E.Funny enough, toothpaste actually does less work than you think.
F.These minerals are pulled into the teeth to prevent them from going bad.
G.So if you brush too soon you could damage that typically hard, shiny protective layer.
