21、How a Family Garden Will Improve Your Health
Plant a family garden—you’ll all live healthier! Gardening is an easy activity to share and you’ll harvest benefits along with your fresh vegetables, colorful flowers, and tasty fruit. When you and your kids work together to plant and care for a garden, you can all enjoy these benefits. Even better, you don’t have to wait for your plants to flower to see the benefits. 【1】
※ 【2】
Gardening and yard work are light exercises, which we all need every day (for at least 30 minutes). While taking care of your family garden doesn’t require much, it’s still beneficial to your body and mind.
Gardening can help reduce stress for some fascinating reasons: enjoy fresh air and sunlight, relaxing and repetitive tasks, and even contact with harmless bacteria in the soil that helps release serotonin in the brain.
※ Better sleep and healthier eating
【3】 . And better sleep, in turn, can improve kids’ behavior and performance at school.
Kids who grow vegetables eat vegetables. Adults who garden are also more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables than non-gardeners.
※ Outdoor time and family time
Children like spending a lot of time indoors, which can negatively affect their behavior and health. 【4】
Planning, sowing, and looking after a family garden offers physical activity with a purpose shared by everyone. It gives all of you a project to work on and enjoy together, which improves your family relationship.
※ A sense of responsibility
Gardening helps teach kids responsibility. 【5】 , either independently or with an adult. While you don’t want them to burn out on tiring tasks like weeding, taking responsibility is part of what makes a family garden meaningful.
A.More physical activity and lower stress
B.Better knowledge about vegetables and fruit
C.Some of them are right there for you to enjoy
D.Having a better sleep is important for everyone
E.They can do a lot of the work for your family garden
F.The benefits above can contribute to more and better sleep for everyone
G.A family garden gets them outside enjoying and experiencing the natural world.
22、Aspirin was discovered in 1897, and an explanation of how it works followed in 1995. That, in turn, has encouraged some research leads on making better pain relievers through something other than trial and error. This kind of discovery—answers first, explanations later—is called “intellectual debt”. We gain understanding of what works without knowing why it works. We can put that understanding to use immediately, and then tell ourselves we’ll figure out the details later. Sometimes we pay off the debt quickly; sometimes, as with aspirin, it takes a century; and sometimes we never pay it off at all.
In the Age of Intelligence, while machine learning presents lots of problems and gets things wrong, at least we know enough to be wary of the predictions produced by the system and to argue that they shouldn’t be blindly followed: but if a system performs perfectly (and we don't know why), then we come to rely on it and forget about it and suffer consequences when it goes wrong.
It’s the difference between knowing your car has faulty brakes and not knowing: both are bad, but if you know there is a problem with your brakes, you can increase your following distance, drive slowly and get to a mechanic as soon as possible. If you don't know, you're likely to find out the hard way, at 80mph on the highway when the car in front of you came to a sudden stop and your brakes give out.
We don’t have much by way of solutions. Most important, we shouldn’t trick ourselves into thinking that machine learning alone is all that matters. Indeed, without life value, machine learning may not be meaningful answers at all.
【1】What is the purpose of mentioning aspirin in the first paragraph?
A.To present the research process of aspirin.
B.To introduce a similar situation machine learning faces.
C.To show the difficulty in explaining how aspirin works.
D.To prove we can use something even when we don't understand.
【2】What does the underlined word “wary” probably mean in the second paragraph?
A.Negative.
B.Doubtful.
C.Anxious.
D.Watchful.
【3】How does the writer prove that it's potentially worse if a system performs perfectly?
A.By giving a definition.
B.By making comparison.
C.By doing an experiment.
D.By telling a story.
【4】Which of the following statements is the writer likely to agree with?
A.It’s impossible to pay off Intellectual debt.
B.It’s wise not to rely on machine learning.
C.It makes sense to prepare for danger in times of safety.
D.It’s OK as long as a system works well.
23、Over the years I have been fascinated to read about studies into the power of touch. One famous study examined video footage of how people responded to those near them who had been the victim of a crime. Observing their reaction and comparing their behaviors in non-human primates, researchers found that there are striking similarities between the ways that humans and primates such as chimpanzees comfort one another and demonstrate compassion and care.
But to me, it also speaks about the importance of closeness and intimacy. Another study found that holding hands to comfort a loved one can actually reduce their pain. It found that when people who are close to one another hold hands, their bodies synchronize (同步) their heart rate and breathing rate. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised, as we have known for many years about the importance of touch. It symbolizes safety and love which is one of the most important aspects for development as a child. Is it any wonder that, when we are upset, distressed and vulnerable as adults, we seek out the same thing?
The value of touch was demonstrated by a series of disturbing experiments on monkeys back in the 1950s by Harry Harlow, an American psychologist. His work showed the incrediable drive for warmth and intimacy that we have. In his experiments, he took young monkeys and placed them in different enclosures. When given a choice between a surrogate (替代) “mother” to cling to made of wire mesh that had a ready supply of milk or a warm, soft mother that didn’t provide any food, they chose, to everyone’s astonishment, the comfort over food. This flew in the face of what was expected. Yet this appeared to show that it was not food, but being comforted and intimate, that was the most important. The experiments showed for the first time how vital the feeling of being loved is to us.
【1】What can be learned from paragraph 1?
A.Humans have different behaviors from chimpanzees before violence.
B.Comparing behavior of humans and primates is necessary.
C.Comforting the victims of violence is important.
D.Humans and primates resemble in some way.
【2】Which example shows the importance of closeness and intimacy?
A.Giving an upset child candies can comfort him.
B.Observing a victim’s reaction releases his pain.
C.Touching a patient’s hands can make him less distressed.
D.Holding the same heart rate illustrates the close relationship.
【3】Why did the people feel surprised at the experiment results?
A.Because they found the monkeys were not hungry at all.
B.Because the monkeys could comfort the surrogate mother.
C.Because the soft mother didn’t provide any food for the monkeys.
D.Because they always assumed that food was most likely to be chosen.
【4】What can be the most suitable title for the passage?
A.The Power of Touch
B.How to Comfort a Loved One
C.Holding Hands Reduces Pain
D.Love and Safety is Essential
24、For most of us teaching seventh-grader English would be similar to teaching flying monkeys to sit. Just thinking about it, we might feel frustrated. But it was not for Miss Smith. For 40 years, she stood in front of her classroom, tapping the blackboard where an inspirational quote was drawn neatly. “Open your notebook and write,” she would instruct. If a student was late, she would simply say, “Write about why you are late today.” The content and style didn’t matter. It was the connection of thought to paper that was the aim.
If you write long enough, these thoughts will turn into feelings and feelings on paper become visible, clear enough to examine. The anxiety of seventh-graders, the puberty (青春期) crisis and the mixture of emotions need a way out. Miss Smith knew that. She knew her teenage students needed to develop their own guidance systems, or they needed to deal with the forces that surrounded them.
The quotes Miss Smith carefully wrote on the chalkboard were inspirational, and could encourage self-reflection. Most of the notebooks were filled with silly nonsense, like looking forward to pancakes for lunch, or worse, line after line stating that they didn’t know what to write then. Regardless of those, Miss Smith read every entry and in neat red handwriting, wrote notes of encouragement and praise.
She would read Shakespeare and ask how Romeo must have felt about being rejected by his friends and family. The characters in the literature gave students permission to get emotional growth in a safe way, and the words inside those notebooks became more and more personal as time went on. Those who used to be problem students and need saving later became journalists and fiction writers.
No one would disagree that she made every student feel they are not only what they are now but they are more. That point drove them to work hard and see what that “more” was going to be. This is the greatest charm of Miss Smith.
【1】What can be learned about Miss Smith?
A.She was easy to get frustrated with her job.
B.She always got students to express feelings by writing.
C.She was assigned to teach the worst class in the school.
D.She had taught the English writing course for forty years.
【2】What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A.The advantages of recording life on paper.
B.The importance of puberty for a child’s development.
C.The difficulty of understanding and guarding children’s rights.
D.The characteristics of teenage children and the coping methods.
【3】What’s the feature of the sentences in most students’ original notebooks?
A.They’re nearly meaningless.
B.They’re quotes from famous people.
C.They’ re a great encouragement to students.
D.They’ re inspirational and set people thinking.
【4】What’s the author mainly trying to show in Paragraph 4?
A.Miss Smith treats her students equally.
B.Miss Smith has a wide knowledge of literature.
C.Miss Smith’s teaching methods turn out successful.
D.Miss Smith teaches students according to their potential.

26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mike still remember his first Christmas experience with Grandma when he was eight. On the way to Grandma’s, Mike’s big sister whispered, "There is no Santa Claus, even dummies (傻瓜) know that! ""Really? "Mike thought to himself and rushed to Grandma’s.
“No Santa Claus?” Grandma snorted (轻哼). “Unbelievable! That rumor (谣言) has been going around for years, and it makes me mad. Now, put on your coat, and let’s go somewhere.”
“Somewhere” turned out to be a store that had everything. As they walked through its doors, Grandma handed Mike a ten-dollar bill, which was big money then. "Take it and buy something for someone in need.”
Never had little Mike shopped for anything all by himself. For a while, he just stood there with the ten-dollar bill in his hand, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. He was about to give up when Bobbie’s shining eyes flashed across his mind. Bobbie was a kid with an old coat and messy hair, sitting right behind Mike in class. They once walked past a doll (玩偶) shop after school. Bobbie said excitedly at the sight of a teddy bear in the shop window, “If I had one of my own, I would hug it while sleeping…”
That’s it! Mike held the ten-dollar bill tightly with growing excitement, and ran to the shelf. With Grandma’s help, he carefully wrapped the present in Christmas paper, with a card saying “To Bobbie, Wish You A Merry Christmas! From Santa Claus”.
Then Grandma drove Mike over to Bobbie’s house. Grandma said that Santa always sent Christmas gifts secretly, so they crept (爬行) noiselessly and hid in the garden nearby. Then Grandma patted Mike on the shoulder. “All right, Santa Claus, get going.”
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;
