21、We all know at least one person who loves their food insanely hot. They insist that their hot wings “aren’t spicy enough unless I’m dripping with sweat.” From Latin America to Sichuan province, chili peppers and their famous burning taste have become a worldwide sensation. But how could something that burns so hot possibly be any good for people?
In a study by researchers at Marshall University in the US, scientists made the first complete description of capsaicin (辣椒素) — a chemical found in spicy chilis — and its anti-cancer properties. Although capsaicin is not normally a good medicine due to some negative properties such as its spicy flavor, the study found that there are ways to bring out its anti-cancer benefits while overcoming these negatives.
In nature, capsaicin evolved as a defense mechanism (机制) in plants to drive away unwanted animals while attracting those that could spread the seeds, such as birds which cannot taste or feel the spice. From a scientific point of view, capsaicin works by triggering (触发) a pain receptor called TRPV1, causing the body to react as if it had actually touched something hot and dangerous. Yet, this natural repellent (驱虫剂) for most animals has instead become a favorite food for many people, often called “chiliheads”.
So, what is it that attracts humans to capsaicin, chili peppers and spicy food in general? Besides its many health benefits — such as pain relief, weight loss, and body heat regulation — people love eating chili peppers precisely because it hits the pain receptors in just the right way.
As an article published by Scientific American noted: “People seem to enjoy — and actively seek out — many other sensations ... the sensation of falling provided by roller coasters or skydiving, the feelings of fear and anxiety while watching horror movies, the physical pain experienced upon jumping into icy water, or even the feelings of sadness that come while watching a tearjerker.”
So, the next time you bite into a hot chili pepper, remember: it’s not just healthy, but fun too!

22、Cloning: Where Is It Leading Us?
When it was announced in 2018 that the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai had created the world’s first cloned monkeys, Zhongzhong and Huahua, heated discussions followed online. In fact, cloning has always been with us. It is a way of making an exact copy of another animal or plant. It happens in plants when gardeners take cutting from growing plants to make new ones. It also happens in animals when identical twins are produced from the same egg. These are both examples of natural clones.
Cloning has two major uses. First, gardeners use it to produce large quantities of plants for sale. Second, it is valuable for research on the new plant species and for medical research on animals. Cloning plants is fairly straightforward, while cloning animals is much more complicated and difficult. Over the years, many scientists failed in their attempts to clone animals, but their determination and patience paid off in 1996 with a breakthrough - the cloning of a Dolly the sheep.
With the advances of scientific research, cloning will have several major uses in the future. For one thing, it could be used to breed animal species which are endangered, or even bring back species which are now extinct. For another, it could be used to grow human organs or tissue in animals, which could be used for human organ transplants or medical treatments. Finally, cloning could be used to breed animals that will provide us with higher quality meat, milk, or eggs.
While there are technical issues that need to be worked through to make widespread cloning possible, the biggest issue concerns our moral. For example, if scientists brought an extinct animal back into existence, it would be probably end up living in a zoo. That is not very good for the animal. Even worse for the animal is using it as a source of organ transplants - because it will be injured or even die. In addition, many people worry that eating animal products that result from cloning might be harmful to our health over time. The possibility of using cloning to produce human beings is an even bigger concern. What would happen if such knowledge ended up in the wrong hands?
When it comes to cloning, we wonder, ultimately, whether cloning will help or harm the world. No doubt, we will be talking about this question for a long time to come.
【1】What does the underlined word “straightforward” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Frank.

C.Simple.
D.Useful.
【2】What’s the writer’s attitude towards cloning?
A.Supportive.

D.Objective.

A.Cloning might result in eating animal products.
B.Cloning could be used for medical treatments.
C.Cloning has been largely used to produce human beings.
D.Cloning may lead to the destruction of the balance of nature.
23、The accelerating melting of the Himalayan glaciers threatens the water supply of millions of people in Asia, new research warns. The study, led by the University of Leeds, concludes that over recent decades the Himalayan glaciers have lost ice ten times more quickly over the last few decades than that on average since the last major glacier expansion 400-700 years ago, a period known as the Little Ice Age.
The study also reveals that the Himalayan glaciers are shrinking far more rapidly than glaciers in other parts of the world—a rate of loss the researchers describe as “exceptional”. The paper, published in Scientific Reports, made a reconstruction of the size and ice surfaces of 14, 798 Himalayan glaciers during the Little Ice Age. The researchers calculate that the glaciers have lost around 40 per cent of their area-shrinking from a peak of 28, 000 km2 to around 19,600 km2 today.
The Himalayan mountain range is home to the world's third-largest amount of glacier ice, after Antarctica and the Arctic and is often referred to as “the Third Pole”. The acceleration of melting of the Himalayan glaciers has significant impacts on hundreds of millions of people who depend on Asia's major river systems for food and energy.
The Himalayan glaciers are generally losing ice much faster in the eastern regions. The study suggests this variation is probably due to differences in geographical features on the two sides of the mountain range and their interaction with the atmosphere—resulting in different weather patterns.
Dr Carrivick, the leader of the study, said, “While we must act urgently to reduce and relieve the impact of human-made climate change on the glaciers and meltwater-fed rivers, the modelling of that impact on glaciers must also take account of the role of factors such as lakes and debris (杂物垃圾).”
【1】What may be the result of the accelerating melting of the Himalayan glaciers?
A.Himalayan is getting warmer.
B.The Arctic glaciers expand frequently.
C.The whole world is going towards Ice Age.
D.Asia’s water, food and energy is under threat.
【2】What can we learn from the text?
A.The Himalayan glaciers have lost ice since they existed.

C.The Himalayan glaciers have the largest amount of ice.
D.Climate change is the main cause of the melting of glaciers.
【3】Why are the eastern regions of the Himalayan glaciers losing ice much faster?

[1] Inakadate is considered the home of Tanbo art, a rice field art form. Its story as a world-renowned tourist destination began in the early 1990s, when local authorities realized that youths were moving to large urban centers continuously, and started brainstorming for ways of reviving (焕发生机) the village. One of the proposed ideas was an art form inspired by the local’s traditional rice farming, done by hand for hundreds of years. Tanbo art involved the use of different-color rice varieties to turn local rice fields into giant canvases (画布) for complicated designs that revealed their beauty when viewed from above.
[2] The first rice field artwork was unveiled in 1993, when purple and yellow rice plants were used to create a detailed picture of Mt. Iwaki — the highest mountain in Aomori — along with easily recognized characters. A viewing platform was set up somewhere above the rice field, from which people could admire the unique artwork in all its glory. The project was so successful that Inakadate authorities decided to turn it into a yearly event.
[3] To create the impressively massive rice field artworks, locals use a technique which involves surveying the rice fields, perspective drawing (透视绘图), and the handmade plantation of various types of rice plants to create the desired visual effect. Tanbo art has come a long way in the last three decades, with designs gradually becoming larger and more complicated.
[4] Many locals say that Tanbo art has saved Inakadate, bringing in impressive numbers of people from all over the world and boosting the local economy. According to CoolJP, around 200,000 people flocked to Inakadate to see its unique artworks in 2006, and by 2016 that number had ballooned to around 340,000.
