二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、A scientist believes he has discovered a direct link between people's favourite sleeping position and their personality. Professor Chris Idzikowski has described six different positions and what each one says about a person’s character. The professor, who did the research for a hotel group, said, “We are all aware of our body language when we are awake but this is the first time we have been able to see what our position says about us when we are asleep.” At the moment, Professor Idzikowski is trying to sleep in a yoga position that involves crossing your legs around your neck. He says there is no perfect position for sleeping.

1. THE STARFISH

“Starfish” sleep flat on their back with their arms raised. They are good listeners who make friends easily but do not like to be the centre of the attention.

2. THE YEARNER

“Yearners” sleep on their side with their arms raised. They are doubtful and have a very sensible approach to life.

3. THE FOETUS

The most popular position, particularly among women. They sleep curled(蜷缩)up on their side, holding on to the pillow. They appear to be tough but are actually sensitive and shy.

4. THE FREEFALLER

Only 6.5% of people prefer to sleep on their front, making this the least popular sleeping position. “Freefallers” seem very confident, although this hides a nervous personality.

5. THE LOG

The “log” position is similar to the “yearner” but with arms by the sides. “Logs” are easy-going and sociable, but can be seen as too gullible, easily to be tricked.

6. THE SOLDIER

“Soldiers”, who sleep on their back with their arms by their sides, are quiet and reserved. They set high standards for themselves and do not like noisy social situations.

1What can we infer from Paragraph 1?

A. The yoga sleeping position is the best one.

B. People don't know their body language when awake.

C. People's sleeping position determines their personality.

D. Professor Idzikowski shows great interest in sleeping positions.

2Which of the following sayings about the sleeping position is correct?

A. “Foetus” seem to be strong but sensitive.

B. “Yearners” sleep on their back with their arms raised.

C. “Starfish” like to be the focus of the attention.

D. “Soldiers” sleep on their side with their arms by their sides.

3What does the underlined word gullible mean in Paragraph 6?

A. Easily annoyed.   B. Easily approached.

C. Easily cheated.   D. Easily satisfied.

22、Like most of us, I try to be mindful of food that goes to waste. The arugula (芝麻菜)was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roast chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with a dinner invitation. I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, the arugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; I could have made six salads with what I threw out.

In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, “food waste goes against the moral grain,” as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month’s cover story. It’s jaw-dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown away — from “ugly” (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to large amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.

Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and other resources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem. In fact, Royte writes, “if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world.”

If that’s hard to understand, let’s keep it as simple as the arugula at the back of my refrigerator. Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time — but for him, it's more like 12 bones of donated strawberries nearing their last days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C., which recovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered more than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished (有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And the strawberries? Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use in meals down the road.

Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don’t think. “Everyone can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more food than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not include the side dish you won’t eat,” Curtin says.

【1】What does the author want to show by telling the arugula story?

A.We pay little attention to food waste.

B.We waste food unintentionally at times.

C.We waste more vegetables than meat.

D.We have good reasons for wasting food.

【2】What is a consequence of food waste according to the test?

A.Moral decline.

B.Environmental harm.

C.Energy shortage.

D.Worldwide starvation.

【3】What does Curtin’s company do?

A.It produces kitchen equipment.

B.It turns rotten arugula into clean fuel.

C.It helps local farmers grow fruits.

D.It makes meals out of unwanted food.

【4】What does Curtin suggest people do?

A.Buy only what is needed.

B.Reduce food consumption.

C.Go shopping once a week.

D.Eat in restaurants less often.

23、   Every country has its favorite food. Italians like to eat pizza. Indians like to eat hot food. Japanese like to eat fish. Often they don’t cook it.

In England, one of the most popular kinds of food is fish and chips. People usually buy it in a fish and chip shop. They put it in paper bags, and take it home, or to their workplace. Sometimes they eat it in the park or on the road. The world’s favorite food is American fast food. If you go to some important cities in the world, you can find people eating hamburgers and chips. Fish and chips, and Chinese take-away food are very popular in England. But they are less popular in the USA. The Americans eat take-away food, too, like chicken.

But the most popular kind of take-away food is the hamburger. It looks like bread with meat in it. Ham (火腿) is a kind of pork, but the hamburger does not have any pork in it. The hamburgers are also popular in England and Australia.

24、For thousands of years, people have been fascinated by dolphins. Dolphins have developed a number of similar personality qualities to humans’, such as curiosity and sociability, despite having developed in vastly different environments, researchers have found. Recently, a British research team finished an eight-year study of Indo-Pacific dolphins off the coast of Western Australia. These dolphins can use different tools to search for food. The researchers found that these dolphins are more willing to walk with partners that like the same tool. Other parts, like family closeness or sex, have no impact on this relationship.

“It suggests that dolphins form social relationship based on shared interests,” UK biologist Simon said. Apart from dolphins, elephants, horses and bats are also known to form friendships. Are friendships only limited to the same species? Of course not.

In 2015, a goat Timur was originally left in the tiger Amur’s enclosure (围场) as a meal. But instead of eating Timur, Amur likes to play with Timur. Scientists said it’s not unusual among captive (圈禁的) animals. That’s because in captivity, animals don’t need to spend much time and energy marking their kingdom or looking for mates the way they would in the wild. They are actually more likely to feel bored. In this particular situation, the animal’s love to engage socially and playfully may be higher than eating.

【1】What does the author want to show by telling dolphin’s characters?

A.Dolphins prefer to hunt for food in groups.

B.Dolphins tend to make friends like humans.

C.Dolphins are more curious than human beings.

D.Dolphins make friends based on family closeness.

【2】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Showing captive animals are friendlier than others.

B.Explaining why captive animals can form friendship.

C.Describing how different animals get along with one another.

D.Comparing differences between a goat and a tiger’s friendship.
