二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、If you were to throw, say, a banana peel out of your car while driving along the motorway, that would be a completely harmless action, due to the fact that it’s part of a fruit — right? Actually, no. A banana peel can take up to two years to be naturally processed, and with a third of motorists admitting to littering while driving, that’s a whole lot of discarded banana peels. An orange peel and a cigarette butt’s biodegrading (生物降解) term is similar to that of a banana peel, but tin cans last up to 100 years and plastic bottles last forever, as do glass bottles.

Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment and its animals for a longer time, we can’t merely measure the severity of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short length of biodegrading time, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is discarded in the UK every day.

It’s not a cheap habit either: to keep our streets clean annually costs UK taxpayers £500 million, and when you include our green spaces, that goes up to £1 billion. So, it’s not surprising that if caught fly-tipping (乱倒垃圾) you will face a £20,000 fine or even jail time and, if you dispose of something dangerous, the court will give you five years to serve. Regardless of how severe these punishments might seem, however, among the reported cases only 2,000 were found guilty out of 825,000, so we still have some way to go in making sure people obey the rules.

【1】What does the underlined word “discarded” in Para. 1 mean?

A.Harmless.

B.Processed.

C.Thrown.

D.Long-lasting.

【2】Which of the following has the longest biodegrading term?

A.Tin cans.

B.Glass bottles.

C.Cigarette butts.

D.Banana peels.

【3】What can be learned from the last paragraph?

A.Fly-tipping will only cost people some money.

B.It’s not so hard to make sure people obey the rules.

C.A large number of people were found guilty of illegally littering.

D.Every year UK taxpayers spend huge amounts of money to keep the streets from dirt.

【4】What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To call for people not to litter illegally.

B.To stress the importance of good behavior.

C.To encourage people to use fewer plastic bags.

D.To inform readers of different biodegrading terms.

22、When I stepped out the plane from Miami into Charlotte, North Carolina, airport for a connecting flight home, I immediately knew something was wrong. Lots of desperate people crowded the terminal. I quickly learned that flights headed to the Northeast were called off because of a storm. The earliest they could get us out of Charlotte was Tuesday. It was Friday. A gate agent stood on the counter and shouted, “Don’t ask us for help! We cannot help you!”

I joined a crowd that ran from terminal to terminal in search of a flight out. Eventually, I found six strangers willing to rent a van with me. We drove through the night to Washington, where I took a train the rest of the way to Providence. The real problem, of course, is that incidents like this happen every day, to everyone who flies, more and more often. It really gets to me, though, because for eight years I was on the other side, as a flight attendant for Trans-World Airlines (TWA).

I know the days are gone when attendants could be written up if we did not put the lines napkins with the TWA logo in the lower right-hand corner of the first-class diners’ trays. As are the days when there were three dinner options on flights from Boston to Los Angeles in economy class. When, once, stuck on a tarmac (机场停机坪) in Newark for four hours, a planeload of passengers got McDonald’s hamburgers and fries by thoughtfulness of the airline.

I have experienced the decline of service along with the rest of the flying public. But I believe everything will change little by little, because I remember the days when to fly was to soar. The airlines, and their employees, took pride in how their passengers were treated. And I think the days are sure to come back one day in the near future.

【1】What did the author encounter when stepping out of the plane?

A.The gathering crowd against the declining service.

B.Accidental attacks in the terminal.

C.The cancellation of flights to the Northeast.

D.The non-performance and indifference of the security.

【2】Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.Incidents happened to those who fly quite often.

B.The writer used to be a flight attendant for Trans-World Airlines.

C.Even a small mistake might cause complaints from passengers in the past.

D.McDonald’s hamburgers and fries were among regular dinner options.

【3】The reason why the author mentions the past days in the final paragraph is to ________.

A.compare the service in the past with the one now

B.illustrate she prefers more dinner options on flights

C.indicate she has witnessed the best flight service before

D.show she has rich travelling experience

【4】What can be implied from the passage?

A.The writer lived in Charlotte, North Carolina.

B.Passengers would take delight in the treatment they had received.

C.The writer with other passengers waited to be picked up patiently.

D.The writer thought the service was not as good as it used to be.

23、I'm Victor Bobra from Belarus. When I was three years old, a nuclear explosion (核爆炸) blew up in Chernobyl, Ukraine. At the time, I was living on the border with Ukraine. When the explosion happened, my dad, was looking after the trucks at the station. When he heard about the disaster, he took us to Brest on the truck. After that, my family moved to Minsk.

Many years have passed since the explosion. Different places were affected differently. If you live in an area like Minsk, it's not as polluted as other areas. Kids there were born normally. Maybe they were underweight or something, but this was because of the problems of the economic situation. If kids were born around the Brest area, they were, born almost perfectly, because it's the cleanest area in Belarus. But if kids were born around the area to the east of Belarus, most of the kids were born deformed (畸形的).

I don't know much about how it has affected my health. But what happened was that everybody had a medical check-up after the disaster. The doctors found that I had got some protein inside me: So they thought there was something wrong with me, and suggested I should be treated.

My mum set up 'a charity, Chernobyl Children Lifeline, which raised some money for me. I've stayed here for treatment since then. The reason I can't go to Belarus is because of the radiation (辐射). If I go back, I might get radiation and get ill. Certainly there isn't any medical care, because the country is very poor. At the moment I can't even see my parents for a holiday. My parents probably miss me, I think the fault (过失) that Chernobyl new up is the government's.

24、Our suits have four layers: thermal (保暖的) underwear on the inside, followed by an electrically heated bodysuit, a thick wool coat, and a half-inch-thick layer of rubber outerwear. There’re two layers of hoods, waterproof gloves and 35 pounds of weights. There are two batteries for the heated bodysuit, a backup gas container, and finally, my photography equipment. We look like astronauts minus the helmets.

When we finally dive into the freezing water, we’re wearing 200 pounds each. The cold quickly numbs the few square inches of exposed skin on our cheeks, and as the dive goes on, it spreads into our suits and gloves, biting even harder. It’s almost unbearable. Toward the end, as we’re pausing on our way up to let the pressure drop, we search for anything to distract (使分心) us from the pain. When we finally drag ourselves out of the freezing ocean, I lie face down on the ice, my brain dulled, my skin hard and wrinkled, my lips, hands, and feet swollen and unconscious (无知觉的) — then, as my body warms and the blood starts to flow again, the intense pain is at its worst.

What could possibly make this worthwhile? The sight! Only a few species of seals, penguins, and other birds live in East Antarctica, and no land mammals at all. Below, it’s a rich garden. Antarctic marine life has been largely isolated from the rest of the planet for millions of years, ever since the continent separated from the other continents and froze over. Since then the powerful Antarctic Circumpolar Current has surrounded Antarctica from west to east, creating a sharp change in temperature that prevents the spread of marine animals. The long isolation has allowed a surprising diversity of species, unique to the region, to evolve on the seafloor.

The waters under Antarctic ice are like Mount Qomolangma: magical, but extremely unfriendly. Nothing short of full commitment gets you anywhere. The demand is too great. But that’s what makes the images you see here so breathtaking, and the experience of having photographed them and of having seen this place so unforgettable.

【1】What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 1?

A.How entertaining a diver appears to be.

B.How fully prepared the divers are.

C.How advanced modern technologies are.

D.How heavy the astronauts’ equipment is.

【2】The divers suffer the greatest pain when they ______.

A.dive into the water

B.begin to resurface

C.regain consciousness

D.reach the deepest spot

【3】What do we know about marine species in Antarctica?

A.They can be found elsewhere on the planet.

B.They have unimpressive biological diversity.

C.They live relatively independently geographically.

D.They experience sharp changes in temperature.

【4】What makes the diving experience in Antarctica so worthwhile?

A.The challenging circumstances of the diving.
